BrainTeaser3: Money multiplication
Generally, banks take deposits and offer loans. Yet, banks are required not to lend all the deposited money. Assume for simplicity that the central bank requires that banks retain exactly 20 percent of all deposits (i.e. the remaining 80 percent is lent out).
Imagine an economy in which there has been no money, and now the central bank is printing 500 coins and giving them to Mr. A. He then deposits of all these coins in a bank. The bank keeps 20% (100 coins) in its reserves and lends the rest (80% or 400 coins) to Ms. B. Ms. B spends "all" of the 400 coins at a shopping store, and the store manager deposits all of the money (400 coins) in another bank. This new bank then retains 20% (80 coins) and lends out 80% (320 coins) to Mr. C. Mr. C spends "all" of the 320 coins and they end up in some bank again. The process repeats infinitely.
It is obvious that the amount of money (500 coins), originally printed by the central bank, will be "creating" more money through the aforementioned process. How much money (how many coins) will be circulating or available in the economy as a result?

ราคาน้ำมันดิบ Brent และ West Texas Intermediate (WTI) ต่างกันอย่างไร ? และทำไมราคา WTI ถึงติดลบ ?

1) น้ำมันดิบ Brent มาจากแหล่งในทะเลเหนือ (North Sea) คือทะเลระหว่างเกาะอังกฤษและกลุ่มประเทศสแกนดิเนเวีย เนื่องจาก Brent มาจากแหล่งในทะเล ค่าขนส่งทางเรือจึงถูกกว่า .. ราคา Brent กินสัดส่วน 2 ใน 3 ของการอ้างอิงราคาน้ำมันดิบในโลก .. OPEC ก็อ้างอิงราคาตาม Brent

2) น้ำมันดิบ WTI มาจากแหล่งในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ส่วนใหญ่แถบ Texas Louisiana และ North Dakota และเนื่องจาก WTI มาจากแหล่งบนบก ค่าขนส่งจึงแพงกว่า

3) ก่อนยุค 2000 WTI มีราคาต่อบาร์เรลใกล้เคียงหรือค่อนไปทางสูงกว่า Brent แต่หลังจากต้นยุค 2000 เป็นต้นมา สหรัฐฯ ผลิต shale oil (น้ำมันที่แทรกอยู่ในชั้นหิน) ได้มากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ทำให้ supply จากฝั่งสหรัฐฯ เพิ่มขึ้น ทำให้ราคา WTI กลับเป็นฝั่งที่ถูกกว่า Brent ตั้งแต่นั้น

4) ที่ผ่านมา Brent มีแนวโน้มที่จะผันผวนมากกว่า WTI เพราะเป็นราคาที่ใช้อ้างอิงกันทั่วโลก (รวมถึงโดย OPEC) ส่วน WTI ซึ่งมีฐานอยู่ในแผ่นดินสหรัฐฯ จะแนวโน้มที่จะผันผวนน้อยกว่า

5) น้ำมันดิบจะซื้อขายกันด้วยสัญญาล่วงหน้า (Futures Contract) ซึ่งมีสัญญาเรียงกันไปเป็นรายเดือน เลือกซื้อขายได้ตามช่วงเวลาและวัตถุประสงค์ที่ต้องการ ทั้งที่ใช้ลงทุนในเชิงการเงินและที่ต้องการซื้อขายน้ำมันดิบจริง

6) Brent Futures จะซื้อขายในตลาด Intercontinental Exchange หรือ ICE เป็นหลัก ส่วน WTI Futures จะซื้อขายในตลาด New York Mercantile Exchange หรือ NYMEX เป็นหลัก ซึ่ง NYMEX อยู่ภายใต้ Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group หรือ CME Group อีกที

7) Brent Futures ใน ICE จะส่งมอบด้วยเงินสดหรือด้วยน้ำมันดิบจริงก็ได้ ส่วน WTI Futures ใน NYMEX ต้องส่งมอบด้วยน้ำมันดิบจริงเท่านั้น

(ส่วนนี้เพิ่มเติมภายหลัง เพื่อความชัดเจน)

ใน ICE ก็มี WTI Futures ไว้เทรดกระดาษได้ด้วย (ส่งมอบด้วยเงินสด) โดยอ้างอิงราคามาจาก NYMEX .. และในฝั่ง CME ก็มี Brent Futures ไว้เทรดกระดาษเช่นกัน แต่ไม่ได้ถูกยกเป็น featured product .. ประมาณว่า ผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ hot ใคร ๆ ก็อยากเอาไปขาย (ICE ก็ขาย WTI และ CME ก็ขาย Brent) แต่เมื่อพิจารณา trading volume จะเห็นภาพว่าตลาดไหนคือตลาดหลักของแต่ละผลิตภัณฑ์

เช่น ในวันที่ 20 เม.ย. 63 .. WTI (May 2020) เทรดที่ NYMEX จำนวน 247,947 สัญญา แต่เทรดที่ ICE เพียง 20,789 สัญญา .. ส่วน Brent (June 2020) เทรดที่ ICE 372,874 สัญญา แต่เทรดที่ NYMEX เพียง 46,467 สัญญา

8) สถานการณ์ล่าสุดเมื่อคืนที่ราคา WTI Futures ในสัญญา Front Month (ชื่อเรียกสำหรับสัญญา Futures ตัวที่ใกล้หมดอายุมากที่สุด ในกรณีนี้คือ พ.ค. 63) ลงไปติดลบ มีเหตุผลใหญ่ ๆ คือ อุปสงค์ของน้ำมันลดลงสถานการณ์จาก COVID-19 แต่อุปทานยังเยอะอยู่ ทำให้อุปทานล้น และเนื่องจาก WTI Futures ต้องส่งมอบกันเป็นน้ำมันดิบจริง ๆ ทำให้คลังน้ำมันกลางของ WTI Futures ซึ่งอยู่ในเมือง Cushing รัฐ Oklahoma เริ่มถูกคาดการณ์กันว่าจะมี capacity ไม่พอเก็บ

9) เมื่อ WTI Futures ต้องสงมอบของกันจริง ๆ และปรากฎว่าสัญญาตัว Front Month จะหมดอายุในวันที่ 21 เม.ย. 63 ทำให้ผู้ที่ถือสัญญานี้อยู่ กังวลว่าจะเจอภาระในการหาที่เก็บน้ำมัน จนเทขายสัญญาออกมา ราคาจึงดิ่งลงมาเรื่อยจากแถว ๆ $20 ลงมาอยู่ในแดนลบในที่สุด (เท่าที่เห็นลบสูงสุดคือ -$38 ตามรูป) .. นั่นหมายความว่า ใครที่ซื้อแล้วถือสัญญานี้ไว้จนครบอายุ นอกจากจะได้รับน้ำมันดิบแล้ว ยังได้เงินอีก $38 ด้วย แต่จะเอาน้ำมันไปเก็บที่ไหน ณ ต้นทุนเท่าไร ก็ไปว่ากันอีกที .. ซึ่งฝั่งคนยอมขายแบบให้ทั้งน้ำมันและแถมเงิน ก็น่าจะคิดว่าราคานี้คุ้มแล้ว เมื่อเทียบกับต้องไปจ่ายค่าเก็บรักษาน้ำมันเอง เจ็บตัวบ้าง ดีกว่าเจ็บตัวมากกว่า

10) ทั้งนี้ WTI Futures ตัวถัดไปคือ มิ.ย. 63 ที่ยังมีเวลารอส่งมอบ แม้ราคาจะไม่ร่วงขนาดติดลบเหมือนตัว พ.ค. 63 (ที่จะหมดอายุและเตรียมส่งมอบแล้ว) แต่ก็ร่วงถึง 15% เช่นกัน .. ส่วน Brent Futures ที่ไม่ได้มีปัญหาด้านการจัดเก็บ เพราะผลิตใกล้ทะเล มีช่องทางขนส่งออกที่ยืดหยุ่นมากกว่า ราคาก็ร่วงเช่นกัน แต่ไม่มากเท่า แค่ประมาณ 8%

11) แต่ในภาพรวมก็สะท้อนว่า เศรษฐกิจโลกที่เจอปัญหาจาก COVID-19 ในช่วงก่อนหน้า ซึ่งเราอาจจะเห็นผลกระทบในเชิงการเงิน ในเชิงตัวเลข แต่ปัจจุบันเริ่มสะท้อนออกมาในเชิงสิ่งที่จับต้องได้จริงแล้ว นั่นคือ น้ำมันดิบที่มีอุปทานล้นเกินความสามารถในการจัดเก็บ

12) คาดหวังว่าปัญหานี้จะเป็นภาวะระยะสั้น เพราะเมื่อเวลาผ่านไป ก็อาจสามารถบริหารจัดการน้ำมันที่รอจัดเก็บได้ดีขึ้น หรือหากสถานการณ์ COVID-19 คลี่คลายลง อุปสงค์การใช้น้ำมันก็จะเพิ่มขึ้นเอง จนมาดึงน้ำมันดิบคงคลังออกไปใช้ได้ผลิตน้ำมันขั้นปลายน้ำได้มากขึ้น หรือหากสถานการณ์ COVID-19 ยังลากยาว กลุ่มประเทศผู้ผลิตน้ำมันก็ยังมีทางเลือกในการลดกำกลังการผลิตอีกรอบ เพื่อลดอุปทานที่ล้น และดันให้ราคาในภาพรวมทั้ง Brent และ WTI ให้สูงขึ้นได้ ยกเว้นแต่ OPEC อยากทุบ shale oil ในสหรัฐฯ ซ้ำ ๆ ก็อาจปล่อยให้ราคาถูกติดดินต่อไป เพราะ shale oil มีต้นทุนการผลิตสูงกว่า หากราคาขายต่ำลงมาก ผู้ผลิตก็จะบาดเจ็บและล้มตายกันไปเอง เหลือแต่ฝ่ายที่ต้นทุนการผลิตต่ำกว่าที่ยังรอด

13) การที่ราคาน้ำมันดิบขยับลง มักส่งผลกดดันราคาหุ้นพลังงานในตลาดหุ้นไทย รวมถึง SET Index โดยรวม
