BIOG :
Born on September 1st 2017, Club Riviera, new creative entity within Universal M
usic France, sees Philippe Laugier, formerly head of ’Sound of Barclay’, Barclay’s electro division, steering the ship. Born in the south of France, Philippe Laugier lands in Paris in the 90s, where he witnessed the burgeoning of a techno scene that had originated in the US, but whose rising popularity was mainly felt through the UK media and clubs. As an early activist, he is amongst those who started the first Dj booking agency, ‘Respect For’, alongside Laurent Garnier and Martine Meyer, before collaborating in the first French fanzine about techno, called Eden - a publication mainly sold during raves, on which worked Didier Lestrade, Loic Prigent and Michael Amzalag (MM). Following this experience, Philippe Laugier would go on to write for other like-minded magazines (Coda, Clubland) and would often be invited as a speaker on Radio Fg. In 1993, he starts at Universal Music where he released the very first compilation by the Parisian radio (Fg), and the album ‘Future Sound of Paris’ which pitched together exclusive tracks by French Touch’s main artists. At that time, he also took part in the line-up selection for the rave event at the Grande Halle de la Villette, celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the Libération newspaper. He also produced the first interview given in France by the Daft Punk duo, still with Fg. In 1997, Philippe joins Barclay as an A&R and project manager, and starts the Sound of Barclay division. He signed and drove the career of a number of artists including Jackson & His Computer Band, Modjo, Gotan Project, Cerrone, Yuksek, Bob Sinclar or more recently the worldwide sensation Kungs, a young Dj from Aix-en-Provence, who reached the #1 spot in 45 countries with his hit ‘This Girl’. It is during that time that Philippe worked closely with labels such as Versatile, Pro-zak Trax, FFRR, Sound Pellegrino, or even PMR and worked on launching the careers in France of international artists such as Björk, Disclosure, Armand Van Helden, Felix Jaehn… Alongside his label work, Philippe Laugier also co-organises the KABP nights, and shares the programming for the Fab Fest (La Gaité Lyrique). He continues to write for Dedicate and Boycott magazines. In 2017, having spent 20 years with Barclay, he starts his own label Club Riviera - still within Universal Music - which will unveil as of this Fall its first wave of artists (LeMarquis, Avanae, BLV, The Wickeed...).
