42 people killed in Abyei and 35 others injured
The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) said a United Nations peacekeeper from Ghana was killed in fighting between armed men from Abyei and Nuer on 27 January 2024.
The Mission confirms that the clashes took place in Nyinkuac, Majbong and Khadian and efforts are underway for UNISFA to independently verify the number of those killed, injured, and displaced in the violence.
However, Dr. Rou Manyiel Rou, the secretary general of Abyei administrative area said in a press release that 42 people have been killed and 35 others have been wounded.
A series of armed attacks that took place at 16:45hrs on 27 January 2024 in the Abyei Area resulted in civilian casualties and the evacuation of civilians to UNISFA bases to provide safety for those caught up in the violence, UNISFA said in a press statement.
The mission urges a swift and thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to these attacks inside Abyei town and its surrounding areas and to ensure that all perpetrators are held accountable.
