Revolutionary Greetings and Salutations.
Dear South Sudanese Citizens, Government Officials, Dignitaries accredited to South Sudan on Foreign Missions, My Beloved Community Leaders, Mps, distinguish members of the press, greetings to you all irrespective of your places and order.
This morning, I feel like sharing a brief Essay with public about the Name "LUO" for public consumption.
LUO is a name of an ethnicity found in most of East African Countries such as South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Ethiopia and some parts of Rwanda. According to the history, it's believed to be one of the biggest ethnic group in Africa as a whole.
Luo People originated from Bahr El Ghazal the current headquarters of Western Bahr El Ghazal State "WAU". But because of different factors which triggered causes of migration, some migrated along the Nile corridor till the present Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, until Tanzania.
Other sections proceed to Rwanda and others move to the west forming the present Luo of DRC.
Because of it being the biggest tribe in East Africa, most of them begun to name themselves on the basis of sections but the origin name of the TRIBE remain LUO.
In South Sudan the Luo Ethnic group is divided into Five sections that came into force as explained above.
✓ Jo-Luo Natives of Wau/Western Bahr El Ghazal State.
✓ Shilluk/Chollo Natives of Fashoda/Upper Nile State.
✓ Anuak/Anyuak natives of Pochalla.
✓ Pari natives of Lapon
✓ Acholi of South Sudan natives of Pajok.
Other sections in countries like Uganda named themselves Lang, Alur, Acholi and etc. For Kenya remained Luo as well as Tanzania.
The funny thing is that, the language remain the same though there are some variation in grammatical context of the language but 98% of the words remain the same in term of pronunciation among others.
What's that so important about this Essay?
It's actually important to update the mind (s) of the public on important matters and to clear questions like how did the name "Jurchol" came to exist.
With this question in mind, it's clear that the Luo are Nilotic just like Dinka, Nuer and other Nilotic groups in Africa. Moreover, the Luo of Bahr El Ghazal share common borders with Dinka Aweil, Warrap, and Lakes States.
According to the history, the name "Jurchol" is an enforced name on Jo-Luo which means abuse. In Dinka dialect, the word Jur refers to a "STRANGER or ANYONE WHOM YOU CANNOT SPEAK HIS/HER LANGUAGE" (Usually a person who can murder)
Chol refers to two;
a) Black
b) Spending leisure time before final destination.
Connecting the two words will mean "Black Stranger or a Stranger who is just spending leisure time but will proceed to his/her journey destination.
According to the Jo-Luo people of Western Bahr El Ghazal State in particular, they regard the name as an abuse of their identity right in South Sudan and as enshrined in the constitution of South Sudan. This brought to light a massive public outreach onto the real identity of the Jo-Luo people of Wau and disgust the misperceived meaning of identity of the Jo-Luo of Wau.
In summary;
Luo is the tribe name of the Jo-Luo people who inhabitant Wau, Aweil center, Shilluk inhabitants of Fashoda, Anuak/Anyuak inhabitants of Pochalla, Pari inhabitants of Lapon, and Acholi inhabitants of Pajok. Their language is referred to as Luo Language.
Things in common include names such as Ojuok, Okello, Uyu, Akello, Unguce, Orayo, Obuc, Obach, Okoth, Okot, Ojulo, Owar, Dimo, Atho, Utho, and etc.
