Clement Mboro Bridge and the Silence of Luo Leaders

by Arthur Gabriel

I have been following the latest developments in our state, regarding the naming of a new bridge that connects east bank of Wau with the west bank, along Jur River. Of course, I heard, as many others, voices from our Luo community, bluntly rejecting naming of the NEW bridge after our national and prominent politician Clement Mboro aka Uncle Clement.

Most of these voices are not bold enough to explain why they are refusing the name, while others, totally confused for the lack of reasoning like the first group, are demanding the bridge to be named Jur River Bridge! Here, they become even more confused, because you can’t name two bridges in the same city and along the same river, with one name!

What a confused idea, but what a poor imagination!

Lack of courage and wisdom rendered the two groups to conceal their true intention which is crystal clear to whoever frees him/herself from the tribal bigotry.

Their true intention is: Late Clement Mboro is not from Luo. Simple and clear but they afraid to say it because it’s a brittle argument that can be easily refuted! True, Uncle Clement is not from Luo, he hails from one of the smallest tribes in South Sudan called Ndogo, however, greatness of human being has nothing to do with the size of his tribe, but with what he has done to the people. And Uncle Clement was of the greats in our country.

To revisit the recent history of Wau, one might discover that Mr. Geroge Kongor who was once governor of Wester Bahr El-Ghazal, built a bridge in Wau, and was named after him, despite the irrationality of naming what you have achieved while you’re incumbent, after you. Governor Mark Nyipuoj followed Knongor’s path and built a bridge to be named after him, while in power! All the mentioned achievements were faced by shameful silence from our Luo community. Of course, their silence regarding Mark achievement can be seen even by the blind. And to whom it may concern, Governor Mark hails from Luo, as well as the author of this piece.

What a double standard, but what a consistent incontinency!

Had it not for a deep silence being heard loudly by the so-called leaders of Luo community, namely: General Mark Nyipuoj, member of the SPLM Polit bureau and the former governor of Western Bahr El-Ghazal, General Elias Waya former governor of Western Bahr El-Ghazal, Mr. Zacharia Wil Garang the incumbent deputy-Governor of Western Bahr El-Ghazal and the Chairman of SPLM in the state, had it not for their deep silence I wouldn’t have bothered to write this piece.

In fact, their deep blemishing silence is disturbing and poses questions and doubts regarding threats to other communities. A silence that can be interpreted as a clandestine collusion or implicit agreement with the rejectionists in their desperate endeavor to create tribal tensions between us and our brothers and siters from other tribal components in the state. Particularly, when a leader of Luo Youth community, in his recorded conversation with a state official, has mentioned the name of General Elias Waya discussing with him the bridge issue, insinuating, and giving a listener an idea and considering the position of General Elias as nebulous if not in complete support and corroboration with the tribal move of our impetuous youth.

In my perspective, our leaders, must distance themselves from that kind of myopic tribalism and emerge with a strong voice to thwart any attempt that would be a stumbling-block in venerating and honoring our leaders, such as Uncle Clement Mboro, the first southern Sudanese to be Minister of Interior Affairs in Sudan in 1964, and of course who’s no lesser than Joseph Garang, the prominent and seasoned politician and a member of the Central Committee for the Sudanese Communist party, who in turn is no lesser than the former governor Mr. Darius Bashir, who’s no lesser than uncle Jervase Yak, a member of the Third Sudanese Sovereignty Council, and the list goes on and on. Uncle Clement Mboro deserves to be honored, and it is a right time to do so. The future posterity would have chance to honour others too since it is not going to end with the bridge only.

For the rejectionists, naming the river after our tribe, Jur (Luo), does not mean it is our own property, as naming the bridge after Uncle Clement does not mean his immediate family or even Ndogo is going to claim its ownership and prevent anyone including Luo, from using it.

*Brief Essay II*

Topic: Relationship between Chollo and Jo-Luo .

By Eng. Clement Kon Uyu Nguar
Juba, South Sudan

September 16|2023.

Patriotic Greetings to South Sudanese.

Chollo which is also known as Shilluk is an ethnic group in South Sudan found in Fashoda county of Upper Nile State. It's one of the subsection of the Luo tribe in South Sudan. Chollo community is a monarchy based lead Community.

The community is currently being ruled by a King known as ''King Kwongo Dak Padiet"

To the present time, the King Palace is in Fashoda but because of the intensified violence that erupted in November last 2022, King Kwongo Dak Padiet was relocated to Juba by H.E Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit the President of the Republic of South Sudan.

Similarly to the Jo-Luo people, The Jo-Luo are the inhabitants of Western Bahr El Ghazal State as cited in the recently published article with the title/topic "the Name LUO".

But the small different is that the Jo-Luo are practicing Chieftaincy based lead Community instead of Kingdom. Under this local government system of administration, the highest position is always referred to as "Paramount Chief" of a given location.

Now,

What's the relationship between the Chollo and Jo-Luo?

The relationship is very tied to which most of our elders knows better.

Chollo/Shilluk are the descendants of "Nyikang" the younger brother of "Dumo".

It is also believed that Anyuak/Anuak and Pari are descendants of Nyigilo (According to the history)

Jo-Luo are the descendants of "Dumo" the elder brother of Nyikang, Nyigilo, Buor and Achol.

For more details kindly elders like
1) Gen. Mark Nyipouch Ubong,
2) Kon Victor Dimo,
3) Prof. Kon. K. Madut
4) Ustaz Henry Manyual Lual.
5) Amb. Santino Fardol.
6) Amb. Chol Mawut.
7) Hon. Modesto Achor.
8) Gen. Peter Lau Madhieu
9) Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin.
10) Prof. Adwok Nyaba.
11) His Majesty King Kwongo Dak Padiet
12) His Majesty King Akwai Agada Akwai among others can help.

This is the genesis of the the relationship between the two ethnic groups. So they are descendants of Dumo and Nyikang who were brothers.

How did the migration of the Chollo and the rest of the Luo subsection started?

The Chollo begun to migrate to Upper Nile State (Fashoda and Makal) after small disputed triggered by the lost of SPEAR.

Nyikang and Dumo were having a "Spear" and a "Beat" respectively by that time.

The spear was taken by Dumo and went for hunting with it. He (Dumo) went and pierced an Elephant with the spear and the elephant got on his way (Escape) with the spear to a far distant. Dumo could not trace the elephant in order to get back the Spear.

Upon returning home, Dumo was not having the spear, Hey Dumo! Where's my spear? Nyikang asked his elder brother.

Dumo said, an elephant run away with it. This conversation went on to the level of unproductive argument where Nyikang (who owned the spear) have to forced his elder brother to go and look for the spear.

Dumo as an elder have to face a lot of challenges in tracing the footprints of the pierced elephant. He starved in the bush for days just to get back the Spear.

After walking a long distance, he got the elephant and remove the spear, brought it back to his younger brother.

The two brothers continued to live peacefully and in harmony but sooner than later, the child of Nyikang swallowed the Beat of Dumo. History continue....

Dumo as an elder brother to Nyikang loss tamper and declared war on his younger brother. This was to pay back for the difficulties and challenges encountered by Dumo when he was forced by his younger brother to go and look for the lost Spear.

Dumo have to declare that his beat should be returned by Nyikang. Nyikang at his capacity as a younger brother requested for more time so that his child may excrete off the swallowed beat but Dumo could not listen.

This argument again went on and ended in tears after Dumo locked off his heart till they have to operate the child and have the beat removed.
Bad story ever.......

The child was operated and the beat was remove. After this exercise, Nyikang as a younger brother together with Nyigilo and Achol decided to move following the Nile corridor to the present Fashoda, Makal, Pochalla, Lafon and Pajok of Upper Nile and Eastern Equatoria States. This is how Nyikang together with his followers separated with Dumo leaving the descendants of two brothers apart.

Till this date, the descendants of Dumo and Buor remained in Bahr El Ghazal Region while the descendants of Nyikang, Nyigilo and Achol lives in Upper Nile and Equatoria Regions.

To date, there's a cohesive kind of relationship between the two descendants of Dumo and Nyikang.

As a writer, I am much happy to see the leadership of Luo Traditional Dance Group in Juba under the leadership of Abraham Abichieng Agany together with his team have paid a courtesy visit to his Majesty King Kwongo Dak Padiet of the Chollo Kingdom in Juba.

This historic visit should be remembered and should continue. Brothers can disagree and agree at last.

I boldly vested my support to you for the needful work you have shown.

Recommendations;
In every writings there must be some recommendations to be highlight. I will never know whether this recommendations will reach the intended persons or not but here they are;
1) Revenge is bad and should be abolish by South Sudanese communities. It's what make Dumo and Nyikang to live apart. We should learn how to leave in peace, unity, and harmony.
2) Tribalism is a deadly disease. We should give it the correct dose for it to be eradicated.
3) Jo-Luo and Chollo/Shilluk are all Luos. They should reunite under one command for prosperity of our next generation.
4) Culture should be revive in all aspects of lives.
5) Peaceful Co-existence should be encourage.

𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: SSPDF soldier arrested for shooting pregnant wife in Rumbek

A South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) soldier in Lakes State has been apprehended after he shot and wounded his pregnant wife, leaving her with three bullet wounds.

The incident, which occurred in Timic village on Sunday, is believed to be rooted in a dispute over dowry payments. The wife’s parents had taken legal action by opening a case at the Rumbek Town Court demanding that the soldier fulfill his dowry obligations or face divorce. This dispute had festered over the years due to the couple’s failure to adhere to cultural and traditional practices regarding dowry payments.

The police spokesperson in Lakes State, Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac said the soldier decided to kill his wife after being dragged to court by her family for failing to pay the bride price.

“He shot his wife identified as Awut with 3 bullets. One bullet landed on her left eye and it destroyed her eyesight and the other two bullets hit her in the abdomen,” he said. “Recently, his in-laws decided to open a case against him in Rumbek Town Court to compel him to either pay the dowry or divorce their daughter. The court had adjourned the hearing to Monday, but instead, he chose to resort to violence, shooting his wife with the intent to kill her.”

“He subsequently fled the scene of the crime but fortunately the commissioner of Rumbek Central County and security forces managed to apprehend the SSPDF soldier on Monday and he is now in custody and an investigation is ongoing,” Maj. Mabor added.

The victim is currently receiving medical care at Rumbek State Hospital and Dr. Terran Madit Terran, the medical director, said her condition is stable.

“So far the woman is a little bit stable because she has multiple gunshot wounds. We do not know the reason for the shooting but she was brought to the hospital in a very critical condition and we operated on her the same day,” he said. “She had injuries to her mouth and abdomen. We did our best, and the rest we left to God. We managed and did our best. She is now under observation and receiving treatment. Currently, we cannot consider transferring her until her condition stabilizes.”

The victim, who is a mother of three, is in the early weeks of pregnancy.

*Brief Essay for Public Consumption.*

*_TOPIC: The Name "LUO"_*
*
By Eng. Clement Kon Uyu Nguar
Juba, South Sudan* .

Revolutionary Greetings and Salutations.

Dear South Sudanese Citizens, Government Officials, Dignitaries accredited to South Sudan on Foreign Missions, My Beloved Community Leaders, Mps, distinguish members of the press, greetings to you all irrespective of your places and order.

This morning, I feel like sharing a brief Essay with public about the Name "LUO" for public consumption.

LUO is a name of an ethnicity found in most of East African Countries such as South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Ethiopia and some parts of Rwanda. According to the history, it's believed to be one of the biggest ethnic group in Africa as a whole.

Luo People originated from Bahr El Ghazal the current headquarters of Western Bahr El Ghazal State "WAU". But because of different factors which triggered causes of migration, some migrated along the Nile corridor till the present Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, until Tanzania.

Other sections proceed to Rwanda and others move to the west forming the present Luo of DRC.

Because of it being the biggest tribe in East Africa, most of them begun to name themselves on the basis of sections but the origin name of the TRIBE remain LUO.

In South Sudan the Luo Ethnic group is divided into Five sections that came into force as explained above.
✓ Jo-Luo Natives of Wau/Western Bahr El Ghazal State.
✓ Shilluk/Chollo Natives of Fashoda/Upper Nile State.
✓ Anuak/Anyuak natives of Pochalla.
✓ Pari natives of Lapon
✓ Acholi of South Sudan natives of Pajok.

Other sections in countries like Uganda named themselves Lang, Alur, Acholi and etc. For Kenya remained Luo as well as Tanzania.

The funny thing is that, the language remain the same though there are some variation in grammatical context of the language but 98% of the words remain the same in term of pronunciation among others.

What's that so important about this Essay?
It's actually important to update the mind (s) of the public on important matters and to clear questions like how did the name "Jurchol" came to exist.

With this question in mind, it's clear that the Luo are Nilotic just like Dinka, Nuer and other Nilotic groups in Africa. Moreover, the Luo of Bahr El Ghazal share common borders with Dinka Aweil, Warrap, and Lakes States.

According to the history, the name "Jurchol" is an enforced name on Jo-Luo which means abuse. In Dinka dialect, the word Jur refers to a "STRANGER or ANYONE WHOM YOU CANNOT SPEAK HIS/HER LANGUAGE" (Usually a person who can murder)

Chol refers to two;
a) Black
b) Spending leisure time before final destination.

Connecting the two words will mean "Black Stranger or a Stranger who is just spending leisure time but will proceed to his/her journey destination.

According to the Jo-Luo people of Western Bahr El Ghazal State in particular, they regard the name as an abuse of their identity right in South Sudan and as enshrined in the constitution of South Sudan. This brought to light a massive public outreach onto the real identity of the Jo-Luo people of Wau and disgust the misperceived meaning of identity of the Jo-Luo of Wau.

In summary;
Luo is the tribe name of the Jo-Luo people who inhabitant Wau, Aweil center, Shilluk inhabitants of Fashoda, Anuak/Anyuak inhabitants of Pochalla, Pari inhabitants of Lapon, and Acholi inhabitants of Pajok. Their language is referred to as Luo Language.

Things in common include names such as Ojuok, Okello, Uyu, Akello, Unguce, Orayo, Obuc, Obach, Okoth, Okot, Ojulo, Owar, Dimo, Atho, Utho, and etc.

Majorly, the Luo people lives in cities such as Juba, Wau, Fashoda, Lapon, Pajok, Aroyo, Awada, Barmayen, Mapel, Akuyo, Kuajiena, Roc Roc D**g, Kangi, Udici, Ulelthony, Pochalla, Gambella, Kampala, Nairobi, USA, Australia, Canada Europe and UK among others.

Learning Points
✓ People are called Jo-Luo
✓ Villages own by the Jo-Luo people are called Pa-Luo
✓ Tribe Name is called Luo.

In conclusion, I thank everyone who scroll down to the end of this text and applaud your positive contributions toward making this text great.
I would also thank the media houses or individuals who will share this text with the public on their timelines.

This text is not intended for political consumption nor is it intended for sectional or tribal benefits but rather it's purely a social text.

Activist Michael Wetnhialic slam Anti good governance in Warrap State

By Michael Wetnhialic

The Warrap State Anti-Good Governance negatively talks about the administration of H.E. Manhiem Bol, the Governor of Warrap State despite his historical achievements

In August 2023, Governor Manhiem Bol officially visited Twic Mayardit's areas of Aweng, Madyar, Majong-noon and the deep forest of Toch-achel to asses the scene of the crimes related to massacre by armed groups from the Abyei Administrative Area and Nyang/Abii-Nuer Payam.

Upon his arrival to the affected areas of Twic and Abyei, marked the the first visit to those remote areas by the sitting Governor particularly to Toch-achel, the large area inhabited by both Jieng Twic-Kuac under Warrap State and Nyang/Abii-Nuer Payam under Unity State.

In addition, Governor Manhiem offered some food items like maize flour, rice, and sugar before proceeding to Ajak Kuac. Demonstrating signs of gratitude, the local communities appreciate His Excellency Governor Manhiem for his historical achievements.

Nonetheless, the groups of anti-good governance are endangering the reputation of good governors for their political survival on social media. They are just busy posting dangerous propaganda against Governor Manhiem Bol. I swear by God, some critics and saboteurs will never see heaven because of their war against Governor Manhiem Bol. Believe me or not, we shall see!
