The First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, underlined the crucial need for developing border areas to address the needs of migrant communities as also promoting peace and cooperation among neighboring tribes to prevent conflict.

Machar, who spoke at the Inter-Ministerial Summit on Migration Governance in Juba on Thursday, stressed the significance of tribes such as the Dinga, Gwaii, Toposa, Turkana, and Kambayon, who live in areas bordering Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia and frequently clash over shared territories.

He called on East African countries to work together to transform border areas from zones of conflict to areas of unity.

"I also keep another file. Our pastoralists are these common border tribes. An example is the Hedeka tribes. In that region, there are always conflicts. So, with the other four countries, three countries, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia, we say we must develop these areas so that the common border does not become a conflict area," Dr. Machar said.

Machar's appeal underscores the necessity of regional collaboration in resolving the socioeconomic challenges that pastoralists face as they travel across borders on a seasonal basis.

In response to the growing political turmoil, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), headed by Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi, has denied claims by a group led by Josephine Lagu that they rejected him as their presidential representative.
The faction strongly denied the accusations in a statement released on Thursday, calling them baseless and devoid of pertinent facts.
The SSOA leadership stressed their incapacity to disown Abdelbagi, citing their earlier decision against nominating a single candidate for the Vice Presidency in 2020.
The controversy sparked on Wednesday, when Josephine Lagu's camp publicly expressed a lack of trust in Abdelbagi's function as the Vice President representing SSOA in the presidency.
In response, SSOA leadership underlined that no one has the authority to remove Abdelbagi from his post, noting that Lagu was not elected as SSOA's Chairperson and that her claims to the role violate Article 10, subsection seven of the SSOA Charter.

South Sudan’s Ministry of Labour has announced Christmas and New Year holidays.
According to a circular issued on Thursday, the ministry declared a public holiday from Tuesday, 24th December 2024, until Thursday, 26th December 2024.
The work will resume on Friday, December 27, 2024.
The public I also informed that Wednesday, 1st January 2025, will be a public holiday and that all employees shall resume work on Thursday, 2nd January 2025.

A fire outbreak at Juba’s Main Market, Konyo-Konyo, has left many traders in tears after goods worth millions of South Sudanese pounds were destroyed.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but witnesses told King Media that the fire started in the afternoon when the market was packed with people buying Christmas-related items.
It razed almost all parts of the market, as shops with foodstuffs, cosmetics, clothes, and other items were seen destroyed completely, according to the sources.
