Minister of Agriculture, WFP, and Action Against Hunger Launch Rice Harvesting

The State Minister of Agriculture and Forestry in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Hon. Garang Chan Atak, joined forces with the World Food Programme (WFP) and Action Against Hunger to officially launch the rice harvesting season in Titchok Mareng, Aweil East County.

On Saturday, Hon. Garang Chan Atak inaugurated the rice harvest in Titchok Mareng Boma, a project funded by the World Food Programme and implemented by Action Against Hunger.

During the launch, Hon. Garang emphasized the impact of climate change on crop production, urging the community to focus on alternative agricultural practices, particularly rice production, which is better suited to current climatic conditions. He stated, "This project will be extended to all other counties because rice is resilient in the face of climate change."

In recent years, flooding has severely impacted crop yields, but the community has seen promising results from this initiative, with 200 households benefiting from the program. A total of 100 hectares were cultivated, yielding an impressive 1,600 sacks of rice, as noted by Garang.

Looking forward, the Minister disclosed plans to enhance future harvests by collaborating with international partners to supply fertilizers and farming tools to local farmers. "Our goal is to improve harvests in the next season," Garang affirmed.

The Minister also acknowledged the dedication of the community in implementing this project, expressing gratitude to the donors (WFP) and the implementing partner (Action Against Hunger) for their commitment to supporting local agricultural development.
