President Salva Kiir has appointed Prof. Robert Mayom Kueirot Deng as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba.
He replaces Prof. John Apuruot Akech who was removed this evening.
South Sudan's London Embassy Closes Due to Inability to Pay Rent
A South Sudanese diplomat says his country's embassy in London has been closed due to a failure to pay rent since August.
VOA confirmed that South Sudan's embassy in Great Britain was closed on Tuesday.
A spokesman for South Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs insisted his government has not received official notice from its landlord in London.
"We are trying to our best so that we are able to pay the arrears that are needed by the landlords,'' Mawien Makol Arik told VOA.
Makol acknowledged the embassy is experiencing financial difficulties.
'We are aware of the difficulties that the [London] embassy has been going through as regards to the obligations that are needed for that embassy to carry its duty including the rent and other things," he said.
South Sudan's government announced in 2015 it would temporarily close down many of its embassies as the war-torn country's economy deteriorated. The country has about 24 embassies and missions in Africa, Middle East, Europe, Asia and America.
In June last year South Sudan recalled its top diplomats from seven countries, but said the recalls have nothing to do with the country's economic crisis.
The crisis, sparked by four years of civil war, has left South Sudan's government strapped for cash, and most of the country's envoys around the world have not received salaries for up to one year.
South Sudanese diplomats in Washington were finally paid one month's salary this month.

The leadership of Revive South Sudan Party (RSSP) would like to inform its members as well as
the general public that we have just received confirmed reports that our comrade, Dr. Peter Biar
Ajak, has been put under temporary arrest after unconfirmed allegations leveled against him. We
would like the public to know that this is simply an administrative detention to finalize the process
of investigation pending judicial proceedings, but our comrade will be released soon to defend
himself in front of a competent court of law.
The RSSP would like to stress the fact that these are mere allegations so far and none of the
accusations made have yet been confirmed. This temporary detention is routine in US legal
proceedings in such cases and the accused is innocent until proven otherwise in front of a
competent court of law.
As these are serious accusations against a known political figure who has publicly called for
peaceful exit of the current political regime in South Sudan, we kindly request the public to respect
the privacy of our comrade, Dr. Peter Biar Ajak, and to avoid spreading unconfirmed rumors and
to respect the privacy of his family in these enduring times. As you might all be aware, the general
political environment in South Sudan is currently very tense and such allegations could be made
to intimidate political opponents. Our comrade is part of the RSSP which is a civilian political
party that calls to unseat the regime in Juba through democratic processes as clearly stipulated in
our manifesto.
The RSSP would also like to draw the attention of the public to the fact that these accusations
leveled against our comrade are dubious in nature, simply because the region is already awash with
weapons and there are no convincing reasons to purchase weapons from the US to be exported
to South Sudan, even if we assume that these accusations were based on facts.
Finally, we would like to confirm to the general public that Dr. Peter Biar Ajak will be released
within the next few days, and he should be able to come to the public to explain the circumstances
surrounding these baseless accusations.
