NSS Arrests Akop, Editor-in-Chief of Juba's Dawn Daily Newspaper

Emmanuel Monychol Akop, the Editor-in-Chief of the Dawn Daily English Newspaper, was arrested by South Sudan's National Security Service on Thursday, according to Patrick Oyet, President of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS). Oyet confirmed the arrest but stated that further details were still being gathered. The arrest comes amid concerns over the controversial National Security Service Act of 2014 amended 2024, which allows the agency to make arrests without a warrant. This is the latest in a series of actions against journalists and media professionals in South Sudan, raising alarm among press freedom advocates.

Cabinet Orders Interior Minister to Recover Looted Cattle in Mogiri

The Cabinet meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir, has directed the Minister of Interior, Angelina Teny, to recover cattle looted during a deadly attack in Mogiri Payam, Juba County. The attack, which occurred last Thursday, targeted cattle traders from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) and resulted in at least 22 fatalities, with several others wounded.
During a press briefing on Friday, Minister of Information Michael Makuei Lueth confirmed the devastating toll from the ambush, which saw around 500 heads of cattle stolen by an armed group. The attackers remain unidentified, but sources indicate that the cattle are being held in the Mangala area, prompting the Cabinet to take swift action.
“It is not known who the attackers are, but we have received information that the cattle are being held in Mangala. The Minister of Interior has been directed to ensure these cattle are not moved and to take necessary measures to apprehend them and, if possible, return them to their rightful owners.” Makuei told reporters
The Cabinet has also instructed Minister Teny to conduct a full investigation into the incident and report back with her findings.
In addition to the recovery efforts, the Cabinet strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a serious source of insecurity.
"This kind of violence disrupts the peace and security of the Juba-Bor road, which was established to serve the people, not to be exploited for criminal acts," Makuei added.
Authorities are urging swift action to prevent further violence in the area, which has already seen tensions escalate in recent months.

Commuters defy ban on ‘unsafe’ Juba-Bor highway

Many commuters and drivers have defied a 72-hour government suspension of the use of the Juba-Bor highway following deadly violence.

The suspension of the route came in the wake of a brutal attack on Wednesday that left at least 22 people dead and several others injured.

The violence occurred in Mogiri Payam, Juba County, when an unknown armed group ambushed cattle traders from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA). In addition to the fatalities, large herds of cattle were looted during the assault.

In response, the National Government ordered a halt on traffic along the highway, a key route linking Juba with eastern states like Jonglei and the GPAA. However, many drivers, especially from rural areas, have opted to disregard the order, citing the high cost of air travel and the highway’s essential role in connecting communities and facilitating trade.

The Jonglei State Drivers Union President, Deng Jool Deng, explained the dilemma facing the commuters.

“It is difficult for the people to stop. The challenges of life require movement between Juba and Bor. Air travel is expensive for many locals and the road remains the most accessible means of transport,” he said.

Some drivers continue to use the highway, seeking to maintain the flow of goods and services. Many fear that halting travel will have detrimental effects on the local economy and livelihoods.

“We need more soldiers stationed along the road, and we need better coordination between the states and the national government to ensure the safety of travelers,” urged Deng.

The Jonglei State Police Commissioner, Maj Gen John Baak, said that police escorts were being provided to travelers along the highway.

“We have been moving with the travelers and we are ensuring that the road remains as safe as possible under the circumstances,” Baak said.

However, concerns persist with a growing number of attacks on civilians and traders. The situation has sparked widespread anxiety, with many road users questioning the ability of security forces to effectively address the threats.

Juba-Bor Highway Closed After Gunfire Erupts Between Armed Groups and Traders

Traffic along the Juba-Bor highway has come to a complete halt following a deadly security incident involving unknown armed groups and cattle traders from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA). The clash, which took place on Wednesday morning in Mogiri Payam of Juba County, has left at least 20 people dead on both sides, while unspecified number of cattle were looted during the skirmish, according to the office of governor for Central Equatoria state.

Deng Jool Deng, the president of the Drivers Union in Jonglei state, confirmed to this publication that his office has issued an emergency directive suspending the transportation of both goods and people along the vital highway for a period of 48 hours. This suspension is set to remain in effect until security conditions improve and stabilization efforts are initiated.

“We received reports of a violent altercation involving cattle traders from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area and unidentified gunmen,” Jool said in an interview. “In light of this, we have made the decision to halt all traffic on the Juba-Bor highway for the next 48 hours to allow time for the government to address the situation.”

Jool also appealed to the national government to strengthen security along the highway, urging for additional military reinforcements to be dispatched to the barracks stationed at strategic points along the route.

The suspension of transport has caused critical disruption to the movement of goods and people, as the Juba-Bor highway is a critical trade route linking South Sudan’s capital to the eastern part of the country. The security situation remains fluid, and authorities are closely monitoring the developments.

The South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident or potential reinforcements.

Mahjoub Biel Turuk, the governor of Jonglei State, has canceled an administrative order issued by his deputy to establish a committee to address deadly inter-clan fighting in Nyirol County over alleged insubordination.
Last Friday, Deputy Governor Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk issued an order establishing a State High-Level Committee to intervene in the conflict. Kuol, in her order, said she was acting on behalf of her boss and cited Article 103 (a)(d) of the 2011 Jonglei State Transitional Constitution and Presidential Decree No. 106A (2)(A) as the basis of her powers.
Meanwhile, Bol Deng Bol, a political observer, said the latest political development set a worrying trend and called on the state leadership to embrace the spirit of collegial cooperation for the sake of peace in the troubled Jonglei.
