The music industry in South Sudan is definitely growing. Musicians, who have been fighting for their rights and recognition over the past decade, are now getting the attention they deserve on social media and YouTube, a popular platform used by musicians to share their music and videos. The following list includes the most popular artists on YouTube, as determined by their number of subscribers, and views
1. Mary Boyoi
Controversial Mary Boyoi tops the list with over 31,000 subscribers on her YouTube channels. She joined YouTube in 2012 and has over three million views on her videos.
Her song, single ladies was the first video she uploaded to her Channel in 2012.
2. John Frog
John Frog, is a true definition of success. From having barely 1000 subscribers years ago, John Frog whose real name is John Aguek has garnered over 18.1K subscribers in a very short time making him the fastest rising star. He joined YouTube in 2017, and has posted only 10 videos since then. His most popular uploads are "Action n' Energy " with over 193,000 views and "Kebiir Wara" with more than 130K views.
3. Dynamq
Dynamq is a South Sudanese musician, award-winning DJ based in the United States who joined YouTube in the early days of 2005. He has amassed over 5.9 million views and over 15.6K subscribers making him one of the most followed South Sudanese musician on social media.
His hit song, 'Those Days in Nairobi" has over a million views on his channel.
In addition to being popular on YouTube, he is very active on social media.
4. Lady Kola
Lady Kola, a self-proclaimed leader of 'Shamashin" comes in third in our list of top 10 most followed South Sudanese musicians on YouTube. Known for her ranchy and explicit content, Kola joined YouTube in 2019 and she has already amassed over 1.18 million views on her YouTube channel and over 13K subscribers.
Some of her famous music videos are 'Dugu Kas' which is about to hit half a million views and Muhaba featuring Ugandan Cindy with over 109K views.
5. Emmanuel Jal
Emmanuel Jal, a South Sudanese rapper, entrepreneur and activist who once said he ate his dead friend's flesh to survive as a child soldier is our number four.
He joined YouTube in 2009 and has about 12K subscribers.
With 113 videos on his channel, Jal has garnered 1.9 million views and over 12K subscribers.
6. Amac Don
Amac Don is a South Sudanese singer living in Australia, he trails Emmanuel Jal with 12K subscribers. He joined YouTube in 2013 few years after he was resettled to Australia from Kakuma Refugee Camp. He has amassed 4 million views on his channel with 60 videos.
7. L*l Simon
L*l Simon known for his hit song 'South Sudan Diva,' joined YouTube in 2018 and he has garnered 10.5K subscribers and amassed about 1.2K views.
He best known for his melodic voice and he has 29 videos credited to his YouTube channel.
8. Hardlife Avenue Stars
Hardlyfe Avenue Stars is a South Sudanese music group formed in 2011 by Nicky Prince and the late Mantani. Producer Linus later joined the group.
The group joined YouTube in 2016.
With 9.5K subscribers to their belt and 1.87 million views to be proud of, Hardlyfe Avenue is fire that can't be extinguished.
9. Beckie Johnz
If there is a female artist that has work her butt-off this year, then it's gotta be Beckie Johnz, a South Sudanese singer, songwriter and actress base in Australia.
She announced her returned to music in 2019 and she has since been making big strides. Joining in 2019, Beckie has amassed 8.3K subscribers with over 454.7K views on her channel.
10. Alijoma Mabil
This list wouldn't be complete without a singer like Alijoma real name Alier John Magot Ghor. Alijoma with huge female fan base across South Sudan is our 10th most followed South Sudanese musician on YouTube. He has countless hit songs to his name and his concerts which are always packed like surdine is a prove that people love his music.
He began his career in 2010, under stage name Nicky Jay. He joined music streaming channel YouTube in 2013 and currently has 28 videos on his channel and with 8.3K subscribers and 1.5 million views on his channels, making his videos some of the most viewed South Sudanese videos on YouTube.
