One year anniversary of peace signed between two feuding subclans successfully celebrated in Akobo County
On 29th of September 2024, USAID Shejeh Salam supported the commemoration of one year anniversary peace signed by Chie-Bhol and Chie-Mankhoat subclans. This agreement brought to an end a eight years conflict which killed over 43 people from 2015 – 2024. The commemoration was attended by over 600 participants comprising of youth, women, faith-based group, traditional chiefs, local authority and NGOs representative. The event was proceeded by two one day peace rallies organized in Wech-goak and Meer inhabited by the two former enemies. During the celebrations, people danced, key stakeholders gave speeches which promoted peaceful co-existence, and the two clans feasted together for the first time.
The following are some resolutions agreed in 2023 which the parties have recommitted themselves to observe:
1. The two subclans accepted to forgive each other and leave the past and promised to not revenge.
2. They had agreed to pay the blood compensation for the people that were lost during the conflict.
3. The subclans agreed that hate songs and speeches shall be stopped immediately.
4. Chiefs from each community shall collect cows from their people and report to the county authorities within the agreed timeline. Any chiefs failed to collect the blood compensation cattle on the agreed timeline shall be suspended.
5. Local authority shall supervise the payment of blood compensations. After compensations are completed, the elders shall perform ritual to pronounce a curse on whoever recompose hate songs and or carry out revenge against each other.
6. The two subclans shall adopt restorative justice approach whose aim is rebuilding the broken relationship.
7. They also agreed on the free movement of all people including perpetrators from both sides, they will allow their educated sons to return back home after they were displaced by this violent conflict.
8. Villages were deserted due to violent conflict will be re-occupied by the very people who used to live there before as a result of having peace without fear in town and elsewhere in Akobo.
9. Importing of Ouzo (wine) from Ethiopia and use of Bhang (Ma*****na) should be banned by local authority because they make people commit crimes unknowingly and also fuel revenge killings.
Speaking with 98.5 Akobo FM, after the dialogue. Deng Reat, is the youth Leader from Chie-Mankhoat and he said what we have done today is a peace dialogue between Chie-Wooh and Chie-Bidiet. We have concluded today after three days. We love this peace all of us as the youth and nothing shall happen again.
Reat added that no one will ever start a fight again. According to what I have seen from them because I have been with them days and night. We have gone to Wechgok and Meer and I am very happy with the youth. What I can tell them is that lets stop all forms of revenge killings.
We have seen all the celebrations (are being done by Choirs every Sunday) and before we used to celebrate our normal celebration anytime we want and nowadays no more and the only place for celebration is the church this is because of revenge killings among ourselves. We need to go back to our normal life and my big advice to you is that lets love peace and let there be no fight again and on our side as Chie-Bidiet from Nyandit nobody is going to die again.
For his part, Thijin Ruot, is also a youth leader from Chie-Bhol clan. He said what we have been doing today is a peace dialogue between Chie-Biliew and Chie-Bhol. All the people of Akobo are so happy for how this two subclans have forgiven themselves. When we arrived in the county hall, according to how I saw their faces, I cannot doubt anything from their eyes on both sides. All I can tell the community of Akobo is that we the two subclans have forgiven our themselves and the rest of the clans having the same issues should also forgive themselves.
Martha Nyachieng Chuol, she is one of the elder whom who attended the meeting. She is very happy of what had happened. I am very happy with this peace agreement. We have suffered for so many years in search of peace and our children have been killing themselves and we have been suffering of hunger too.
Today our children have agreed to never fight again, I have seen peace in them. Secondly, they have agreed to be together. Our radio has been supporting our voice to reach this agreement and we are happy for today for that.
I can tell the community of Akobo to stop fighting and the rest of the world should know that we have peace and we are one family. Our children or brothers from Chie-Bhol and Chie-Mankhoat have forgiven themselves and this serves as an example to the rest having cycle of killings to do the same and forgive yourselves.
This dialogue has been supported USIAD Shejeh Salam through GEC, 98.5 Akobo FM and plus other partners. The county peace committee and the entire Akobo County Local Authority has also played bigger roles in this initiative.
