☠| Beware Python Developers: Clipper Malware Strikes PyPI with Over 450 Infected Packages

▶ Security researchers from Phylum have discovered that more than 451 packages on the Python Package Index (PyPI) contain "clipper" malware.

▶ The malware replaces the contents of a victim's clipboard with something that benefits the attacker, usually by modifying cryptocurrency addresses to steal funds.

▶ The researchers were alerted by their automated risk detection platform on February 9th, and noted that this campaign looked similar to a previous one discovered in November 2022, but with an updated obfuscation technique and a "radically increased" volume of affected packages.

▶ The attackers are using typosquatting to get developers to install the malicious versions, and a Chromium browser extension is created to load automatically when targeted browsers are launched using the '--load-extension' command line switch.

🚨| New Survey Reveals Top Challenge for 2023: Recruiting Skilled Developers Amidst Layoffs in Tech Industry.

▶ A recent survey by Infragistics of 2,228 software developers and IT professionals reveals that despite recent layoffs in the tech industry, the biggest challenge in 2023 remains recruiting skilled developers.

▶ More than one-third of respondents (37.5%) said they will continue to struggle finding skilled developers, with DevOps Engineer, Data Analytics Developer, and IT Security Engineer positions being the hardest to fill.

▶ To address the shortage of skilled developers, 76.8% of organizations are using low-code/no-code tools. The survey also found that nearly half of a developer's time (43.4%) is spent on coding an app, while almost all developers (88.8%) work with a designer or design team.

▶ Organizations are turning to new solutions like low-code/no-code tools to solve problems and save money, according to Casey McGuigan, Reveal and Slingshot product manager.

After months of rumors and speculation, OpenAI has announced GPT-4: the latest in its line of AI language models that power applications like ChatGPT and the new Bing.

The company claims the model is “more creative and collaborative than ever before” and “can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy.” It can parse both text and image input, though it can only respond via text. OpenAI also cautions that the systems retain many of the same problems as earlier language models, including a tendency to make up information (or “hallucinate”) and the capacity to generate violent and harmful text.

OpenAI says it’s already partnered with a number of companies to integrate GPT-4 into their products, including Duolingo, Stripe, and Khan Academy. The new model is available to the general public via ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI’s $20 monthly ChatGPT subscription, and is powering Microsoft’s Bing chatbot. It will also be accessible as an API for developers to build on.
