Roll for initiative!

This year, we partnered with industry, academia, and other government agencies in a series of 10 tabletop exercises to map out how electric air taxis will fit safely into the national airspace. Read more about these expert-led https://go.nasa.gov/3PZVYqa

To close out the old year, I will write a few words about one of the most beautiful images taken by the Webb Space Telescope. It showed Jupiter in infrared, its northern and southern auroras, faintly visible rings, as well as two moons : Adrastea is visible on the edge of the ring, while Amalthea is visible to the left. The telescope also highlighted diffractions of light, and faint specks can be seen in the background below - these are probably distant galaxies.

As you watch this weekend's full Moon (learn all about it at go.nasa.gov/3uK1NyK) it's interesting to note that some other natural satellites in the solar system have a comparable size, including Neptune's Triton and Jupiter's Europa. go.nasa.gov/3jGq2HJ 🌕

Before the freezing dessert that stands today, liquid water flowed on the surface of Mars longer and a lot more recently than previously thought — by about a billion years! Dip into the details:

Set a reminder: Our Lucy mission is scheduled to launch on Sat., Oct. 16 at 5:34 a.m. EDT (9:34 UTC) to ancient asteroids called Trojans.

The Trojan asteroids are rocky worlds as old as our solar system, and they share an orbit with Jupiter around the Sun. They're thought to be remnants of the primordial material that formed the outer planets. On Oct. 16, NASA's Lucy mission is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to explore these small worlds for the first time. Lucy was named after the fossilized human ancestor (called "Lucy" by her discoverers) whose skeleton expanded our understanding of human evolution. The Lucy Mission hopes to expand our understanding of solar system evolution by visiting these 4.5-billion-year-old planetary "fossils."

The equinox happens twice a year in our year-long trip around the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn begins. In the Southern Hemisphere, spring is here!

September Equinox 2021 is Coming! In meteorology, the fall season begins on Sept. 1, however, the September (or fall) equinox gives us the green light to welcome the astronomical fall season in the Northern Hemisphere (and astronomical spring season in the Southern Hemisphere). This happens Sept. 22...

On Sun. Aug. 29, don’t miss the second launch attempt of a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station. Live coverage of the mission begins at 2:45 a.m. EDT (06:45 UTC) with liftoff targeted for 3:14 a.m. EDT (07:14 UTC) from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

In addition to approximately 2,300 pounds (1,000 kilograms) of science experiments riding aboard the spacecraft, the crew can look forward to assortments of cheese, ice cream, and veggies! Docking to the orbiting lab is targeted for Mon., Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. EDT (15:00 UTC).

🥶 Cooling atoms to a billionth of a degree above absolute zero? That's no problem for the Cold Atom Laboratory aboard the International Space Station.

Atomic physicist Ethan Elliott explains how this experiment helps us understand the universe in a new episode of our podcast: https://go.nasa.gov/3yuc6Xh

The laws of physics get very, very weird in the realm of particles too small for the eye to see. Aboard the International Space Station, an experiment called the Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) is exploring how the universe works .

Smoke Across North America

Smoke from fires raging in central and western North America has spread widely across the continent. Skies have turned hazy in cities ranging from Boston to Washington, D.C., as smoke from fires in Canada’s Manitoba and Ontario provinces poured into the U.S. Northeast.

This map shows the concentration of black carbon particulates—commonly called soot—over North America on July 21, 2021. The black carbon data come from the GEOS forward processing (GEOS-FP) model, which assimilates data from satellite, aircraft, and ground-based observing systems. To simulate black carbon, modelers include satellite observations of aerosols and fires. GEOS-FP also ingests meteorological data like air temperature, moisture, and winds to simulate the plume’s behavior.

Dense plumes of black carbon are also visible streaming from clusters of fires in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and California.

Somali Airlines was the flag carrier of Somalia. Established in 1964, it offered flights to both domestic and international destinations. It operated Boeing 720Bs, Boeing 707-300s and Airbus A310-300s on a network to the Middle East and Europe.[1] The airline discontinued operations after the start of the civil war in the early 1990s, when the country fell into anarchy.[2] A reconstituted Somali government later began preparations in 2012 for an expected relaunch of the carrier,[3] with the first new Somali Airlines aircraft scheduled for delivery by the end of December 2013.[4]
