MIWGEM’S VISIT TO KING JIMMY MARKET

King Jimmy is one of the notorious
markets that sits in the capital Freetown, along Wallace Johnson street.

History have it that, it was named after a ruling chief in the 18th century who burnt down the first attempt at a free settlement by freed blacks from London.

King Jimmy is one of the oldest and popular markets in Freetion, and has for decades contributed immensely to the food supply chain in the country's main Capital, Freetown.

It is an important trading center enveloped by the river where traders from Lungi and the likes arrive in boats with goods including vegetables, smoked fish, plasas etc, that are sold at a bargain.

It is also a place where the common man stops to shop for most of their fresh food both wholesale and retail prices.

The king Jimmy market place is also an historic place where slaves were chained in dungeons ready to be auctioned and shipped to the west.

It is a vital part of the nation’s dark history and tourist attraction.

Along the years, King Jimmy has became an appalling sight to the worst human habitation where people live in Squalor, abject poverty and deplorable conditions.
The place has been neglected for many years, but still exists as a place where people live and work.

At the brink of the market, holds a sight of pigs, dogs, children and adult compete to Scavenge on rubbish for food, or Scraps of metals or plastic bottles to sell just to survive.

The poor health of the market which
based near the sea is a major concern for local communities and those who visit the area. It is also a subject to the effects of salt and humidity from the sea.

This has caused a number of problems including, the deterioration of the infrastructure and the quality of the food and other goods that are sold, poor sanitation and hygenic conditions and also encroachment.

During raining season in Freetown, people residing at king Jimmy, that has eventually become a slum area, suffered a lot due to the poor infrastructure that has resulted to Flooding, landslide, disease and infections.

It is important at this point for an immediate campaign strategy and awareness program so as to improve on the maintenance of this monumental area and to prevent more disasters and unnecessary deaths.
