Photos: Sierra Leone rangers face a tough fight against deforestation

As the rainclouds descend on Sierra Leone’s tropical Kambui forest, a handful of khaki-clad rangers assemble for their daily patrol in the fight to preserve the West African country’s dwindling wilderness.

The team are from the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) and are tasked with guarding the rainforest from encroaching illegal mining and logging.

But with just 62 wardens to cover some 14,000 hectares (35,000 acres), it’s an arduous game of cat and mouse.

“The devastation is getting worse every day,” said Sheku Jusu, 36, the regional NPAA conservation officer.

“When we are patrolling in the forest, every day we come across new sites that they have just started operating.”

Jusu’s words became a reality no more than 30 minutes into the rangers’ ascent, when a pile of fresh sand on the riverbank indicated that mining had just taken place.

“This is very recent, this was an hour or two ago,” said Bockarie Kowa, 48, the NPAA regional coordinator.

“While we are sleeping, they come.”

By mid-morning it was already 27 degrees Celsius (80 Fahrenheit) with 96 percent humidity, and the group faced a long trek on unforgiving terrain.

Kambui Hills Forest Reserve lies in Sierra Leone’s Eastern Province – an area bordering Guinea and Liberia with large reserves of gold, rutile and diamonds.

The APC is stronger and ready for a return to governance in 2023 – says former president Koroma
September 23, 2021 Abdul Rashid Thomas 3

Former President Ernest Bai Koroma: Sierra Leone Telegraph: 23 September 2021:

The events of the last few days have been very historic for one of Sierra Leone’s, and indeed, one of Africa’s oldest and most successful political parties. The All Peoples’ Congress (APC) of Sierra Leone has endured more than three very turbulent years, following the 2018 general elections.

But once again, the delegates and the general membership have shown that the APC is capable of dealing with its own challenges and together, rise above the parapet stronger, more determined and ready to better serve the people of Sierra Leone.

It is also a testament to the indispensable fact that democracy is not alien to the APC; rather, it has always been and would continue to be integral to the character of our party.

For this remarkable determination manifested in the outstanding organisation, peacefulness, inclusiveness, transparency, and success of the party’s Emergency Delegates Conference (E -NDC), I commend ALL my Comrades, irrespective of any differences in terms of views and actions.

I urge you to maintain this spirit of dialogue, of working together, of inclusive participation and of fostering progress in the pursuit of the Party’s aspirations.

It is okay for family members to disagree, but it is not right to keep grudges over such disagreements. Put the past behind you, open your arms, embrace one another, and keep the momentum as we proceed to the next stages of the process of putting the party back on the path to regain national governance.

From what has happened throughout the last few years and in view of the formidable leadership and strength of the membership exhibited during the just concluded E -NDC, I now feel even more confident that even after I would have stepped down as your leader, the APC is robust enough to peacefully and democrat

left the meeting with their tails firmly tucked between their legs and heads bowed down in shame as they were told to be more constrictive and honest in their opposition.

When you have the likes of Yansaneh (the biggest sycophant of all) in a room full of well-informed and serious people, this is exactly what you would expect - the old APC script of obstruction wrapped around a litany of lies - - totally ignorant of current realities on the ground. It is sad to know that it takes visitors from another country to school these people on what is ACTUALLY happening in their own country rather than what their distorted minds are telling them. Ordinarily, one would expect them to learn from this lecture to be a constructive opposition but knowing the way he (Yansaneh) and his kind think and act, they won't. They will continue to use this same old, tired, script. And that is sad because their obstructionism is robbing our country of the kind of opposition politics needed to hold the Bio government accountable...

Why The Opposition Came Cold Out of The Meeting With US Congressional Delegation.

The fallout of the disorganized opposition parties is beginning to come to the fore as details are now emerging of their bitter encounter with the US Congressional Delegation that visited Sierra Leone over the weekend.

According to one of the members who attended the meeting, APC scribe Osman Foday Yansaneh catalogued a whole lot of complains or grievances against President Julius Maada Bio's government and style of leadership. Unfortunately he waded into the waters of high-handedness and dictatorship of President Bio to which one of the female Representatives retorted that "How can a president be said to be high-handed but has decriminalized libel, abolished the death penalty and created a more conducive atmosphere for journalists and you yourselves to operate? There are no political detainees in the country as we speak,".

At that point 'Ginger bread boy' Dennis Bright butted in and started with his inflation and economic hardship heaped on Sierra Leoneans by the government. He was quickly stopped in his tracks by another Congressman who told him the international community is impressed with President Bio's handling of the economy especially during the pandemic. The Congressman even schooled them on the global increase in prices of everything as a result of the Covid-19 and how Sierra Leone has been an example of efficient management of a country in the midst of a global pandemic.

At that point Mammy Motmot Femi Cole stepped in with her government not been inclusive and tolerant but was also steadied by a Congresswoman who told her that to the best of their knowledge the government is very inclusive and tolerant. She spoke of how more women are now in top positions and the efforts by the government to pass laws enhancing women's rights and participation.

Overall the opposition's meeting with the US Congressional Delegation did not go according to their script.
