On This Day: January 6th, 1999
The unimaginable became reality.

It was the morning of my grandmother's birthday when the 8-year civil war reached our doorstep, and the next 2 weeks behind enemy lines changed everything for me and my community.

Today, as we celebrate peace, let’s remember: that peace is precious, and we must protect it at all costs.

Whatever happens, we must NEVER forget. 🕊️

Saw this amazing artwork and a short story came to me:

In the magical African village of Marapinto, it was the night before Christmas—though no one knew it as such. The missionaries had not yet arrived, weaving their so-called good spells into the fabric of the land. Pedro, Columbus, and their ilk were still distant shadows, their sails yet to mar the shores. And yet, their absence diminished nothing of the wonder that danced in the night air.

The elders stood beneath the canopy of the infinite sky, its stars shimmering like ancient ancestors bearing witness. They raised calabashes brimming with palm wine and toasted their principal peace—a peace unbroken, untainted, and whole. Drums beat in harmony with the pulse of the earth, while voices rose in songs that carried the spirit of their unity across the winds.

Alaja Okpere, the seer, her face illuminated by the amber glow of the fire, spoke with a voice that wove itself into the soul of the night. “Mark this night,” she proclaimed, her words laden with mystery. “For it is the greatest night of a thousand nights!” Her people cheered, unaware of the bitter truth hidden in her prophecy.

If only they had known. If only we had known. This would be their last year of freedom, their final taste of unspoiled joy. By the next harvest, the first ships would arrive, bringing with them chains—visible and invisible.

For a thousand years to follow, the peace they celebrated tonight would become a memory, a dream whispered from generation to generation. Love and harmony, once abundant, would be treasures buried beneath the weight of conquest and sorrow. Yet the hearts of Marapinto’s descendants would refuse to surrender. In their songs, their stories, and their spirits, they would fight to reclaim the light of this night, even as the centuries dimmed it.

And so, on that fateful night, under open heavens and stars aglow, Marapinto danced, sang, and rejoiced in the unbroken rhythm of their ancestors. The village radiated magic, its people basking in a harmony that even time could not erase. For in that fleeting moment, they were free, and the universe bore witness to their joy.
