Autobiography of Esther B.R Fornah: A Nominee in the 50 Most Influential Student Awards Sierra Leone Event

Introduction:
Greetings! My name is Esther B.R Fornah, a year four (4) Hons student at the University of makeni, mass communication department and I am delighted to share my journey with you as a nominee in the 50 Most Influential Student Awards Sierra Leone Event. Throughout my academic career, I have strived to make a positive impact on the lives of others and contribute to the betterment of my community. From participating in debate championships to advocating for gender equality, my experiences have shaped me into a passionate and driven individual.

Early Achievements:
In my first year in the university, I was invited into the executive of the Association of mass communicators Unimak, were I worked efficiently and effortlessly in achieving all academic objectives and social activities.
In November 2020, I had the privilege of being the 1st runner-up in The Late Abdul Charles Debate Championship, an event that tested my critical thinking and public speaking skills. This accomplishment served as a stepping stone towards future successes and instilled in me the confidence to pursue my goals.
The experience was amazing and the desire to help students grew and I decided to Run for the position of Vice Presidency, which I won and the service began. I later became president of Association of Mass Communicators Unimak
During my tenure, I supported the dream of my leader the then president and also served the whole mass communication department and its students.
Continuing my journey, I secured the 1st runner-up position in the Mass Communication competition in June 2020. This recognition validated my abilities in effectively conveying messages and connecting with diverse audiences.

Due to my outstanding performance, I was officially selected as one of those students to serve in the capacity as volunteer in the Directorate of Public Relations at the University of Makeni, a role I have been playing to date.
In September 2021, I participated in “PLATFORM NEXT GEN” International oratory competition, where I proceeded to the semifinals.

In 2023, I won the departmental awards of best debater and most influential student award at the mass communication department.
One of my proudest moments came in 2023 when I participated in the Interdepartmental Debate Competition at University of Makeni. Not only did I receive the accolade of Best Female Speaker, but I also became the 1st runner-up overall. This achievement highlighted my dedication to mastering the art of debate and presenting compelling arguments.

Advocacy for Gender Equality:
Beyond academic pursuits, I am passionate about advocating for gender equality, girls and women empowerment, in line with that I am a Mentee at Voice of women Africa Sierra Leone chapter. This initiative aimed to raise awareness, empower young girls, and foster a safer and more inclusive environment for all.
In 2021, as the Voice of Women Sierra Leone, the team and I organized a school tour in Makeni as part of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence.

Furthermore, in October 2020, I was involved in a radio program dedicated to addressing issues faced by girls. With the theme “HELPING GIRLS BREAK BARRIERS “By providing a platform for their voices to be heard, we aimed to inspire change and foster a society where every girl can thrive, regardless of societal barriers.

Life on campus:
My commitment to campus service extends beyond the roles of leadership I have held. Witnessing fellow students thrive is my ultimate victory. I have orchestrated numerous tutorial sessions benefiting students within the mass communication department and even beyond.
Furthermore, I've assumed the responsibilities of a debate coach and judge for multiple debates held on campus, contributing to the intellectual growth and development of the student community.

Conclusion:
Being nominated for the 50 Most Influential Student Awards Sierra Leone Event is a humbling experience. It reinforces my belief that dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to social change can make a significant impact on the lives of others.
I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to showcase my skills, contribute to important causes, and inspire fellow students to pursue their passions. As I continue on my journey, I aspire to use my influence to create a more inclusive and equitable society, where every individual's voice is heard and valued.
Thank you for accompanying me on this autobiographical journey, and I look forward to the future with great anticipation and excitement.

This is for students who have taken the Mass Communication entrance exam .

Please, make sure you prepare again to take another entrance exam for second optional courses.
It is obvious that not all applicants will be fortunate to pass the exam.
Over the years, before the introduction of entrance exam in all departments, Mass Communication FBC has been the only department that conducts extrance exam for its applicants at Fourah Bay College. But, however, this year is different, because all departments at the University of Sierra Leone, including FBC now conducts extrance exam for all applicants.

Before now, if you apply for the Mass Communication program, and you didn't pass the extrance exam, you will just switch to another department; that is your second option course or even third optional course which is provided in the online application form.

This year is different. Now all departments conducts extrance exam, and they will only admit students who have gone through their departmental entrance examination.

Students no longer have the opportunity to switch to second or third optional course without taking entrance exam of that particular course.

So, to be at the safer side, we want to encourage all students who have sat to Mass Communication FBC extrance exam, to prepare and take second optional courses extrance exam, except now for those who only wants to be admitted at the Mass Communication department and no other option.

The entrance exams at FBC have been slated for 11th and 12th November, 2022 according to the Director of Communication USL.

Changes of phenomenal proportion have occurred in our communication systems. These changes can be connected to how the media operates, and the evolution from analog to button. The media had survived adaptable measures in a bid to keep the tool in fashion. Professionals within the media environment are overwhelmed with the elaborate career opportunities, and the mammoth vacancies that are in sight, looking at the market demand of the trade, and the limited corresponding labor force.

It is important to establish that, the Mass Communications Department, at the University of Makeni, is opening application entries to students with the expected requirements.

Dura Sesay is the President of the Association of Mass Communicators, in his intervention, he spoke on the need for students to have five credits, including English Language to pursue their application stride and have a career in diverse fields, they include, but not limited: Public Relations, Development Communications, Broadcasting, among others he highlighted.

*The First Winner of the Late Abdul Charles Mansaray Memorial Debate Championship*

*Sahr Foa Matturie*

Jeneba Esther Mossima is a third-year student at the University of Makeni, Mass Communication Department. She was born on the 27th of April 2001 in Freetown and was the last sibling of her parents. She attended the St. Josephs's Convent in Freetown and later sat at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Jeneba is the connotation of beauty with brains and a seemingly circumspect individual. She is a good speaker and has a phobia of standing in front of people and speaking.

Mr. Paul Kamara, a lecturer at the Mass Communication Department asked students to do a presentation in class, and he cited certain students with very good verbiage skills and came up with a suggestion of getting a debate stage - because there are hidden talents in the class with the oratory skills, but are shy to enunciate in public.
