Sierra Leone Flag hoisted at the UN Security Council Chamber.
New York: On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, His Excellency Dr. Michael Imran Kanu, joined his four other colleague Permanent Representatives to install their respective national flags as newly elected members of the United Nations Security Council, marking the official beginning of their two-year tenure.
The groundbreaking event occurred in the UN Security Council media stakeout area outside the Council’s chamber. It is a solemn symbolic ceremony for member states joining the United Nations body with the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. This is the second time, in 62 years of the country’s membership of the UN, that Sierra Leone is undertaking this important collective responsibility.
In his statement, Ambassador Kanu stated that Sierra Leone’s “return to the Security Council is a concrete manifestation of the leadership of His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio, whose New Direction foreign policy embodies our national ambition to contribute to strengthening multilateralism and enhanced international cooperation to maintain global peace and security, protect and promote fundamental human rights and achieve sustainable development”.
Sierra Leone will pursue its priorities based on partnership and a representative approach to sustained global peace and security and shall “work within the formulation of the A3 plus, the E10 and with the P5, to most significantly make the Council take meaningful action, and timeously, in maintaining international peace and security, underlining the utility of regional arrangements and regional ownership”.

MP Koroma Joins The Bank Governor Of Sierra Leone To Sensitize The People Over The Expiration Of The Old Currency

It could be recalled that under the leadership of former Bank Governor of Sierra Leone Proffessor Kefala Kallon, redenumenation of the nation's currency was highly recommended to government that would have served as a bigger tool to stabilize the country's economy for which new currency notes were printed to replace the million and thousand with ones, tens and hundreds.
Since then, adequate mechanism had not been put in place for the fading out of the old notes even with different pronouncement of dates for the process.
Under Governor Steven's leadership as the current Bank Governor of Sierra Leone, 31st December 2023, had been declared as the final expiring date for the old notes in the country.
As such, Honorable Ibrahim Koroma who represents Kenema District and by extension the people of Gorama Mende Chiefdom in the well of parliament, had joined the Bank Governor in sensitizing his people to do away with the old notes before the final declared expiring dates if they don't want to forfeit them at all.
He made mentioned of this during his official handing over of 40 bags of cement to the people of Kortuhun village, Kaklawa Section,Gorama Mende Chiefdom for the completion of their town Barry.
The member of parliament wasted no time in telling his people that, it is his role to bring decision from parliament to them and take their views to parliament equally.
He maintained that, parliament had recently passed into a law that beyond 31st December,2023, the old notes shall nolonger be accepted as legal tender in the country.
