The People of Kassirie enjoy renewable energy supply.

On Monday, January 20, 2025, the Government of Sierra Leone, in partnership with its development collaborators, including Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), officially commissioned the Kassirie Mini-Grid project. This significant undertaking aims to provide reliable electricity to communities that have long been underserved.

The Kassirie solar-powered mini-grid constitutes the third initiative initiated by the Universal Energy Facility, a multi-donor results-based finance (RBF) program managed by SEforALL. With an installed capacity of 67 kW of solar energy and 204 kWh of battery storage, this project delivers clean, reliable, and sustainable electricity to 54% of households, businesses, and public institutions in Kassirie. As a result, it directly benefits thousands of individuals within the community who have historically depended on fossil fuel generators to meet their energy requirements.

In a proactive measure to ensure public safety this festive season, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has intensified night patrols throughout Freetown and its beach areas. Utilizing specially customized patrol motorcycles, these enhanced visibility operations aim to deter crime and foster a secure environment for both residents and visitors.

This initiative aligns with the SLP's Strategic Development Goal, which focuses on improving community safety and reducing crime during the yuletide period. By ramping up patrols, the SLP reaffirms its commitment to providing a safe atmosphere for all, allowing citizens to celebrate without fear.

On November 29, the U.S. Embassy officially handed over the ECOWAS Logistics Training Depot to the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) after 22 years of transformative operations.

Since its commissioning in 2002, the Depot has served as a hub for training and equipping over 1,652 soldiers from 15 African nations, while playing a key role in peacekeeping missions in Sudan, Somalia, and Liberia. As part of the handover, the United States also has strengthened RSLAF's capacity with a donation of vital equipment, including 194 vehicles and over 29,000 pieces of communication gear, helping ensure Sierra Leone’s security and peacekeeping capabilities.

Ambassador Hunt said at the event, “this donation has the potential to assist the RSLAF in securing Sierra Leone’s territorial integrity, helping the Sierra Leone Police with internal security, and defending Sierra Leone’s constitution and democracy. With over 200 RSLAF personnel trained in logistics and operational management, this transition ensures the Depot will continue to serve as a cornerstone for national and regional stability.”

The United States remains committed to working alongside Sierra Leone to support peace, democracy, and shared prosperity.
