The book HANDMADE NETWORKS by #SteffenKöhn and #NestorSiré is out!
Read on exploration of Cuba’s alternative digital #infrastructures, highlighting innovative #grassroots solutions to #internet scarcity and reimagining these networks as alternatives to the capitalist #digital infrastructures dominated by Big Tech.

HANDMADE NETWORKS presents a body of research-based artworks by #SteffenKöhn and #NestorSiré. Their collaborative projects explore how the Cuban people have compensated for their lack of #internet #connectivity by building massive #alternative #infrastructures, such as grassroots community computer networks or offline “sneakernets”. They document how Cubans defy material scarcity by recycling or appropriating obsolete technologies, creating digital exchange platforms on messenger applications, or engaging in play-to-earn blockchain games. By examining the resilient and resistive potentials of these vernacular infrastructures, Köhn and Siré’s work also reimagines such networks as viable alternatives to the capitalist, consumerist digital infrastructures controlled by an oligopoly of Big Tech companies that have homogenised the global internet.
With contribution by Cuba's best-known #cyberpunk writer #ErickJMota and by curator, educator and researcher #BaniBrusadin.

A Short Incomplete History of Technologies That Scale
To engage with the word #scale requires an act of imagining and bringing together a multitude of things. It requires thinking about automated images, hidden labour, logistics, surveillance systems, infrastructures and networks. It requires an in-depth consideration of how technical conditions of perception operate upon the very material fabric of the world, and how feelings, emotions and beliefs are deeply connected to and are at stake in the scalar reorganisation of the world.

[#49] In the essay 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, Slovenian media theorist and philosopher #MaksValenčič proposes to call on media theory for a more refined understanding of some branches of contemporary art, like object-oriented art. Media theory offers a more refined starting point, as it is concerned with the very way in which patterns are encoded. Here, art is modelled as a specific register or, more precisely, a mode of encoding that differs from alternative approaches, e.g. in science. In other words: while science encodes, art recodes, since it deals with all possible ways of encoding patterns, including those that do not strive for optimality or the possibility of optimisation. It softens patterns or encodes the same pattern in different ways, thereby establishing alternative functions (or models) for such approximation of input data. Artistic encoding is therefore by definition concerned with another, alternative world or mode of encoding, which is most clearly highlighted by contemporary world-building narratives and various theory-fiction attempts at understanding one’s own practice.

“There is no such thing as truly general purpose AI. We can see that there is this sort of operation of what the media scholar Alex Campolo and I call enchanted determinism. These systems are described as being magical, otherworldly and alien, producing a type of general intelligence that is separate from the humans that build the systems and the earth that’s used for the energy, minerals and water that drive them. Yet at the same time, the scene is deterministic. These systems can produce a type of prediction around how we should live, how the criminal justice system should work, how you should receive predictions for the ideal employee etc.”

“In the midst of all sorts of simulations, scale functions as an operational element that is central to creating its own conditions of coherence. Scale exists as fiducial markers in machine vision, augmented reality and different fields that need to map a multitude of scales into coherent knowledge. What is at the centre of struggles for power here are not only objects and subjects, but fiducial markers themselves. A lighter, an apple, a banana for scale. Science and technology studies would call this the struggle for standards. We have arrived at a situation where scale is not merely about representing reality – was it ever – but engineering it. In short, scales have been merged inside simulations, technical creations of realities, and they operate therein as they construct subject positions in the most material ways as they modulate perceptual directions, content and affect.”

[NEW ISSUE] 💥 In the latest #PostScriptUM, art historian and curator #ValentinaTanni discusses spontaneous new tactics of resistance to cheat the #GreatAlgorithm used by social networks. Some of these aim to reach more visibility, some aim to hide, some to invent a new language, some to exploit entropy. However weak and sparse, they represent a genuine and creative form of everyday survival.
