Cannes Directors’ Fortnight has confirmed a feature film from SE Asia this year: MONGREL by Singapore’s Chiang Wei-Liang and Taiwan's You Qiao Yin! Big congrats to the directors as well as producers Lai Weijie and Elizabeth Wijaya, Lynn Chen, Chu Yun-ting and Marie Dubas, as well as executive producers Hou Hsiao-hsien, Liao Ching-sung and Jennifer Jao. The Taiwan-set film stars Thai actor Wanlop Rungkumjad (MANTA RAY), Taiwanese actress Lu Yi-ching (STRAY DOGS), rapper Hong Yu-hong, Atchara Suwan (BY THE TIME IT GETS DARK) and Guo Shu-wei.

Sonny Calvento’s Primetime Mother has just clinched the Best International Short award at the 2023 San Diego Asian Film Festival presented by the Pacific Arts Movement! 🎥🌟

Primetime Mother is a short film produced as a proof of concept for its full-length feature version, 'MOTHER MAYBE,' by Southern Lantern Studios and co-produced by E&W Films and VOLOS FILMS 飛望影像有限公司. The film project recently won major awards at the 文化內容策進院 Taiwan Creative Content Agency: the MPA Grand Award, Taichung Action Award, and the top prize, the TAICCA & CNC Award for Best Project.

From 2000 onward, the San Diego Asian Film Festival has established itself as a leading stage for Asian American cinema, evolving into the largest exhibition of Asian and Pacific Islander films in the Western United States.

Taste wins the Wild Dreamer Award for Best Film in the feature competition at the 14th Subversive Film Festival in Zagreb, Croatia.

Jury citation: “In this visually impressive study of body shape and movement, the director creates a strange, disturbing world, which could easily be a dream. At the same time a dream of togetherness, and a nightmare of loneliness, which is not intentionally connected to the pandemic reality in which we live, but is quite in tune with it.”

The Subversive Film Festival is “one of the key European mobilisation points for activists and intellectuals from the region and the world”. Past prominent intellectuals invited include Slavoj Žižek, Gayatri Spivak, and Bernard Stiegler.

Mongrel receives a Development Fund from Next Masters Support Program!

【10 projects selected for the “NEXT MASTERS SUPPORT PROGRAM”, an initiative to support the TT alumni】

Previously called “Next Masters Tokyo” in 2010, the filmmaker development project “Talent Campus Tokyo” has been run from 2011 to 2013, and in 2014 the program was reformed as “Talents Tokyo”.
The same year, TT organizers decided to start a new initiative to support alumni from these events by providing grants from (a) Project Development Fund and (b) International Promotion Fund.
Today we announce this year’s selected projects. Talents Tokyo will award a Project Development Fund grants of up to 1 million JPY or an International Promotion Fund grant of up to 500,000 JPY to the selected projects.
