Exploring initiatives or programmes to help your clients and their caregivers? Sometimes, it’s a matter of looking within the sector, and forming partnerships with another Community Care organisation (CCO).

Fei Yue Community Services (FYCS) is a testament of how such partnerships worked wonderfully. Earlier this year, they invited Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL) to give a talk to caregivers of FYCS’s clients to equip them with knowledge and resources.

The initiative is part of the Communities of Care (CoC) programme, which encourages service providers to build partnerships with other CCOs. CoC is funded under the Tote Board Community Health Fund (TBCHF).

Do people confuse your job with that of a caregiver? Give this post a ‘share’ so you can show them next time you get asked!

Ultimately though, caregivers and Community Care staff share common goals and face similar challenges in their dedication to provide care and support so seniors can live and age well within the community. So thank you to all caregivers and Community Care staff for your dedication and hard work! 🧡

What a great turnout for the first on-site Kopi-AAC ever!

Held today at The Westin Singapore, Kopi-AAC brought together more than 400 Community Care professionals to facilitate networking and the sharing of ideas and projects with each other. With ‘Active Ageing’ as the event’s theme due to a greater focus on Active Ageing Programmes (AAPs) and the addition of Communal Dining as a service requirement, there was also an AAP Bazaar where booths were set up by 18 Partner Agencies and Community Partners to establish connections with the Active Ageing Centres (AACs).

Besides generating greater awareness and understanding of newer areas to the AAC model, the event also allowed AACs to familiarise themselves with AAPs providers so that AACs can plug and play from a variety of programmes.

We hope everyone has gained new and useful insights from today’s event!

What a successful turnout for the 9th Community Care Work Plan Seminar (CCWPS) 2024 — a big shoutout to those in Community Care sector who joined us for the event!

Held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, over 700 attendees across the Community Care sector, Ministry of Health, Singapore (MOH) and Regional Health Systems joined us onsite and online to discuss Age Well SG (ASG) and how we can better support our seniors in the community.

Empowering seniors to stay active and healthy for longer — that was the goal of ASG and the focus of the discussions, starting with the Guest-of-Honour, Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Health who emphasised the need to build partnerships and coordinate care services to better meet our ageing needs in alignment with ASG. He subsequently joined the opening panel, alongside AIC CEO Mr Dinesh Vasu Dash and AIC Chief of Caregiving and Community Mental Health Division’s Ms See Yen Theng. They shared their thoughts on the implementation of ASG and answered questions from the audience on embracing ASG.

What are your thoughts on ? Share your insights in the comments!

What is the micro-job initiative?

Centre For Seniors (CFS) designed a programme, Silver@Work, to provide seniors a pathway to reconnect with the community by allowing them to take on micro-jobs, as well as lead more fulfilling lives as they age. This programme has rapidly expanded to more Active Ageing Centres (AACs), offering increasingly flexible employment options such as meal deliveries, medication reminders, befriending services and more that are tailored to the seniors’ needs.

As Singapore progresses as a super-aged society, providing these micro-job roles can not only provide fulfilment within seniors, but also foster a stronger sense of community among our elderly population.

Ms. Tan Su-Yin, Senior Director of Grants at Tote Board, says, “By offering seniors bite-sized roles that have been redesigned to make them more manageable, the scheme allows seniors to fulfil their aspirations for independence while enjoying their retirement.”

Exciting news for the Community Care sector!

The Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore just launched the Silver Guardian initiative last 5 April 2024 at Presbyterian Community Services’ Esther Active Ageing Centre, with Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung, as the Guest-of-Honour.

Silver Guardian is another way AACs can reach more seniors in the community — either as volunteers or as clients. The name encapsulates their mission: Silver, for the work the volunteers will be doing, while Guardian reflects the unassuming yet important role our volunteers play in safeguarding and advancing the well-being of seniors.

As trained volunteers these seniors will be better equipped to provide much-needed support and assistance to AACs and help connect with clients. Silver Guardians are our advocates of care, inspiring other seniors to take part in volunteering or encouraging them to be active participants in the community.

As Singapore’s healthcare landscape continues to evolve, the roles of Clinical Governance Officers (CGOs) and Quality Assurance Committee (QAC) Supervisors have become increasingly crucial in ensuring residents in the community receive the best care possible.

The AIC Learning Network has partnered with Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital (KWSH) to provide training programmes for those in these roles. This would empower participants to align their practices with the Healthcare Services Act (HCSA) and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to fulfill the responsibilities of these roles.

How can we improve the well-being of seniors in nursing homes? It starts with productivity and technological enhancements that will help improve workflow processes within nursing homes which would in turn lead to better quality of life for seniors.

AIC partnered with the Ministry of Health, Singapore (MOH) and MOH Holdings in a pilot project involving five nursing homes to see how these homes can implement innovative ways to improve workflow, adopt technology and make layout enhancements.

Learnings gleaned from this collaboration were compiled into an e-book to serve as a guide for nursing homes so they can improve their productivity and time savings as well as empower seniors and staff.

AIC also offers a Productivity and Digitalisation Grant as part of its Community Care Digitalisation Transformation Plan (CCDTP). Under the grant, Community Care Organisations (CCOs) can apply to improve their technological capabilities and productivity efforts. CCOs can also make use of the consultancy services offered to develop digitalisation strategies in their transformation journey. Does your CCO need to improve its workflow processes? Click below to enquire about the grant.

Turns out, caring really does take a village working towards one goal of improving seniors’ lives.

Thank you to our partners, TOUCHPoint @ AMK 433 (TOUCH Community Services), Lions Befrienders AAC @ AMK 318, Cornerstone @ Cheng San AAC (Cornerstone Community Services), and Allkin Singapore AAC @ Ang Mo Kio 510, for making March 16 an enjoyable day for seniors!

It was all fun and games on that day, as these AACs opened their doors to seniors, volunteers, and guests. There was something for everyone — from an XBox Kinect Game, to line dancing, karaoke sessions, onstage games, arts and crafts, art exhibitions, exercise sessions and everything in between!

We hope the seniors had fun with their friends and mingling with the guest celebrities Chen Han Wei and Kym Ng, as well as talking to Community Care staff.

While events like these help seniors in the community see what AACs have to offer, it’s the dedication and commitment of AAC staff all over Singapore who really spell the difference in how seniors live and integrate well in the community. Thank you to all staff and volunteers of AACs!

A happy hour at the void deck? AIC's CEO Dinesh checked out this unique programme at MWS Active Ageing Centre – GreenTops@Sims Place to find out more! Fun fact: The programme was launched to attract more men to join the AAC.

That's not to say the women are forgotten – while the men chat over kopi, the women have a singalong session in the centre (males are welcome, of course). Watch the video to find out how Dinesh fared against the AAC clients in a table tennis match and karaoke battle.

Looking for activity ideas for your clients? Take a leaf out of Sunlove Chai Chee Active Ageing Centre's (AAC) book by including adaptive sports as part of your programmes! Adaptive sports are sporting activities that have been modified to enable persons of differing abilities, including wheelchair users, to participate actively.

The AAC introduced seated floorball, based on the “Fit & Fun Adaptive Sports Toolkit”, which was co-developed by the Agency for Integrated Care - AIC Singapore and SportCares, the philanthropic arm of Sport Singapore (SportSG).

The toolkit aims to increase activity offerings to engage all seniors, including those who are frailer and/or wheelchair users, beyond the usual exercise and board games, and includes step-by-step instructions, alternative equipment suggestions, as well as ways to make 14 games more challenging or accessible for staff and volunteers to use to keep seniors active.

Download a copy of the “Fit & Fun Adaptive Sports Toolkit” at https://for.sg/fit-fun-toolkit today! FREE training by SportCares is also available for Community Care staff and volunteers. Find out more here: https://go.gov.sg/sc-ads-toolkit

From digital novices to artists!

The Presbyterian Community Services Sarah Active Ageing Centre encouraged and nurtured the artistic talents of 16 seniors through a six-month digital programme to widen their digital knowledge in a fun and personal way.

Since June 2023, seniors have been learning how to create photo and video collages using mobile apps such as Google Photoscan, PicCollage and InShot. With the guidance from the instructors and centre staff, their final artwork are presented in an exhibition for the community. Titled Our Digital Life Stories, the exhibition showcase the seniors’ personal memories, including memories about their childhood, family gatherings, travel, activities they have joined with other seniors, etc.

This initiative is supported by FUN! Fund, which is co-created by AIC and Community Foundation of Singapore. The fund aims to support initiatives that inject fun for seniors receiving community care services, and build the capability of Community Care Organisations to design fun and impactful programmes for seniors.

Congratulations to the graduates and to PCS for a successful project!
