Aunty May - Bread Shop Assistant

I work here at this bread shop and have been working here for 8 years already. My boss is very nice to me and I only work from 4pm-10pm usually. To be very honest my job is really not so difficult, when I come into work I will first check on all the bread to make sure they are fresh and look good so that customers will want to buy it. I will take stock of the bread that have sold more and note it down so that my boss can check after the end of the month and use the information to make sure we are selling breads that are more popular and taking away breads that people don’t really like.

After this, I will usually man the shop and also check on the accounts for the day, it sounds difficult but actually I just check to make sure that the money is right and we have a balance in the cashier. Here on my job is very simple, I just need to introduce our breads and promotion to customers when they come in and make sure that the customers feel good when they come in to buy bread, my boss always tells me if we make our customers feel happy and comfortable coming into the shop they will more often buy our bread. At about 7pm I will have a break and rest. I love having my kopi and also some bread from the shop and just take it easy, at my age life is not so difficult anymore, I just want simple life and enjoyment.

Usually when I go back to the shop that is the timing when we will receive our orders for the day itself. I will check to make sure the orders are correct and slowly sort out the breads and other sauces. Then, I will take my time to put the bread and the drinks into their respective places, like stocking goods. This will usually take me around 2 hours because I like to take my time and make sure everything is right in their own positions. So if there are customers I will still help them and I don’t have to feel rushed. I think the pandemic has not really affected me or the business at the shop because people love bread and we still have to eat right, so I like to be positive about this situation, I’m sure if we all stay positive and strong we can defeat this and become stronger together.

Priya - Coconut Shake Assistant

I just started working here in the recent 6 months actually, but I have to say i’m really enjoying working here. Coconut shakes are becoming really popular nowadays so I literally serve tons of customers everyday and I think that helps keep me motivated and interested at work. I have worked at many places and frankly speaking sometimes when you are too free you actually don’t enjoy that at all, you get very bored and lethargic and unmotivated, and when your boss sees you they will think you are simply lazing around, which is quite unfair.

My toughest part of my job is to cut open the coconuts and to prepare them in the blend, but this can be really tough because we have really heavy and large coconuts that I have a lot of trouble handling, and sometimes I even need to take a break before I can continue. We have around 100 coconuts we have to prepare everyday, and honestly that is the part I don’t look forward to.

My main job requirement is really to prepare and serve the coconut shakes, we first blend the coconut juice and flesh together, wait for a little while before we add in the milk and slight amounts of sugar, depending on the requests of our customers. Then I throw in ice cubes finally to make it frothy and pretty for customers, as per our customers requests we will also add in different types of toppings like the chocolate bits or coconut shavings. I personally think the coconut shavings are the best match with the shake itself.

Honestly I really think I can stay in this job for a long time because I genuinely find it fulfilling and fun, plus, I get free shakes everyday and I am truly in love with the shakes! My hours are not that long either, I work from 10am to 10pm with 2 hour long breaks in between. Some days I feel so full and good with the coconut shakes that I just skip my meals..

Y. P. – Community Care Worker for the Elderly

When we do home visits, we want to check on their current state. The main aim is to befriend them, see how they are doing. But normally when the conversations flow, we find out more about them. We try to build rapport, and to keep track of their needs, we actually record our visits. You do need to look back and see what happens to this senior. Like few months ago, this person was talking quite coherently. How come now I feel like they are not so coherent – is there risk of some cognitive issues? Should we run an assessment to check whether this person might be at the risk of dementia? If we check and there is a risk, then we can refer to polyclinics or hospitals accordingly.

We don’t just serve HDB residents. It’s whatever is within our boundary – this includes the private estates, the condos and the landed property. So it depends on where the boundary is.

At the moment, in areas where we serve, being able to speak good mandarin is an edge. If you can speak dialect, it’s a bonus. My dialect is Hokkien but I do understand the other dialects. For medical terms, I need to Google. But for day to day conversations, like a chat, it can be like, “Chi bao ma (Have you eaten)?” or “Jiak ba buay?” The more proficient you are, the further your conversation will go.

With my little bit of experience, we’ve come to realize that even seniors living on with their children can feel isolated. So that’s where we come in. I think end of the day, we have to accept that they cannot change the family dynamics and it’s not for us to change. But what we can do is to supplement the love and care for the seniors. Like a friend. At least they know there is someone to reach out for. There is someplace I (they) can go. You know, sometimes in life, you don’t have an absolute solution. But there is someone to turn to, talk to, to discuss something.

For my parents, I think I can see ahead and better empathize the kind of challenges they are having. Because we do go for courses.

Brad – Marketer (Canadian who moved to Singapore)

I’ve been here 16 years and I’m trying to get my PR but it’s really tough. At the start, I was actually in Taiwan teaching English in Kaohsiung. I finished a one year contract with the school there and my one year work visa was going to expire. I had a great life there and I wanted to renew my visa so I had to leave Taiwan, go to the nearest Taiwan embassy, and the cheapest flight I could find was Jetstar from Taipei to Singapore. Hong Kong had a bad reputation for giving English teachers a hard time because it was so close to the Taiwan. So I came here, got a new visa and then went to Substation, went to Home Club, met some really cool locals and I didn’t have a job to go back to in Taiwan, so after five days, instead of flying back, I stayed another week and yea, it just kind of grew on me. I met some awesome people here, I went to – at that time – some really nice drum and bass nights at Home Club, the +65 nights. Artists like George Chua and other experimental sound artists that used to play at the substation were the caliber of stuff I used to see at Toronto – really really good stuff. In Kaohsiung at that time, there was a few mainstream hip hop clubs and there wasn’t a great art scene. It was really known as a dirty, industrial port city. It’s changed quite a bit since then. So, after extending a couple of times, I was like why not try to make it a goal over here. I flew back to Taiwan, got all my things out of my apartment, said all my goodbyes and came here, got a job here. And that was it, December 2005 was when it all went down.

After that, I was in my mid to late twenties, I started to get more interested in my career and kind of got bogged down by here. I fell in love with the Southeast Asia region – I still love it – and got to make really good friends here. And here we are, very much later, still here.

I’m pretty much a hippie at heart that ended up in a very capitalistic city state. I sometimes feel like a fish out of water here. I don’t want to go to club street and drink with bankers and play that game.

2 years on and finally the Ministry of Health gave approval for the use of the COVID-19 vaccine on children from age 5 and above. This resulted in two trains of thoughts amongst parents - some parents are relieved that the much awaited vaccine is finally ready for their child, i.e. protection against the virus. But some will be wondering, is the vaccine really safe for my child? What about the side effects? Will my child miss school?

Last Friday was 7-year-old Sarah Wong’s turn to receive her first dose of COVID-19 vaccine at the Woodlands Galaxy Community Club. She understood the importance of receiving the vaccine after her parents explained to her what the vaccine is about. Not only is she protecting herself from the virus, she is also keeping a lookout for her 1-year-old brother at home. The brave girl did not shed a tear during the vaccination and even struck a conversation with the staff administering the vaccine. For that, she was rewarded with a cute sticker and that brought a smile to the girl’s face.

Actually Sarah is not unfamiliar with the COVID virus. Just not long ago, Sarah’s mother was tested positive for COVID-19. Mummy had to be isolated for 10 days and could not have any contact with anyone, including family. Every day, Sarah and the rest of the family had a video call with Mummy over dinner. That was the closest they could get, thanks to technology.

In those 10 days, Sarah’s mummy did not stop worrying about passing the virus to the rest of the family, especially Sarah and her younger brother as they were the vulnerable ones. Another vulnerable person in the family is grandmother, who also shared a drink with mummy on the same day she was diagnosed. Fortunately grandma was spared from the virus, likely because she had already taken her booster shot by then and is very well-protected.

These 10 days of isolation was the longest 10 days in Mummy’s life. The fear of not knowing what was going to happen next kept her on her toes, specially when it wasn’t confirm if she was able to see her loved ones again
