Mind the hidden salt in your salad, soup and other ‘healthy’ food
Many people make an effort to eat healthy, choosing options like noodle soup instead of fried foods, or salads instead of greasy burgers. However, even these seemingly healthy choices can be packed with hidden sodium, putting you over your daily limit.
Singapore has a high sodium intake rate, with nine out of ten people consuming almost double the recommended daily limit of 2,000mg. This is equivalent to about 5g of salt, or slightly less than a teaspoon.
Salt is made up of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. In 2022, the average daily sodium intake for Singapore residents was 3,620mg, up from 3,480mg in 2019.
Along with this increase in sodium intake, there has been a drastic rise in the number of people with hypertension, or high blood pressure. In 2021 and 2022, more than a third of Singaporeans (37%) were found to have hypertension. The figure was nearly double the 19.8% in 2010.
Here are some hidden sources of sodium in food:
• A bowl of fish ball noodle soup can contain up to 2,900mg of sodium, which is more than 100% of the daily recommended limit.
• A bowl of lor mee (noodles with starchy gravy) has about 2,500mg of sodium, most of which is in the gravy.
• A bowl of mee soto (yellow noodles with shredded chicken in spicy soup) has between 2,600mg and 3,700mg of sodium.
• A piece of masala thosai (crispy crepe with spiced potato and onion filling) contains around 780mg of sodium.
• Thousand Island dressing, which is commonly used on salads, contains 863mg of sodium per 100g. When you add grated parmesan cheese (about 1,500mg per 100g) and croutons (about 700mg per 100g), a serving of salad can easily exceed the daily recommended sodium limit.
• Even healthier bread options like wholemeal bread, focaccia, and French baguettes are relatively high in sodium, with each 100g serving containing around 500mg.
• Steamed dim sum: Three pieces of steamed prawn dumplings contain 222mg of sodium, and two rolls of chee cheong fun (steamed rice rolls) with sweet sauce will add another 400mg.
The sodium content of food can vary depending on how it is prepared.
Sports drinks are often marketed as a way to replenish electrolytes, fluids, and glucose lost during a workout. However, they can also be high in sodium.
Here are some tips for reducing your sodium intake:
• Read food labels carefully and choose products that are low in sodium.
• Use herbs and spices to flavor your food instead of salt.
• Rinse canned beans and vegetables to remove some of the sodium.
• Cook at home more often so you can control the amount of sodium in your food.
• Ask for low-sodium options when eating out.
By making a few simple changes to your diet, you can reduce your sodium intake and improve your overall health.

"Singaporean sprinter Shanti Pereira continued her impressive performance at the Asian Games. After securing a silver medal in the women's 100m, she swiftly returned to the track, winning her 200m heat in 23.12 seconds. This remarkable achievement also made her the fastest qualifier for the final.

Edidiong Ofonime Odiong of Bahrain, a three-time gold medalist in 2018, was the second fastest in the heats with a time of 23.35 seconds.

Due to withdrawals, the semi-finals were canceled, and the top two from each heat, along with the next two fastest runners, qualified for the Monday final. Shanti Pereira's silver medal in the 100m was a historic moment for Singaporean athletics, ending a 49-year medal drought at the Asian Games.

Her successful year included winning both the 100m and 200m sprint events at the Cambodia SEA Games and the Asian Athletics Championships. The second stepfather, who met the victim and her mother in early 2020, r**ed the girl while her mother was away with his sons on July 18, 2020. Following his confession, the mother reported the incident to the police the next day.

Safety Confirmed After WWII Relic Detonation in Singapore

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in Singapore has declared that buildings near the site of a WWII relic detonation in Upper Bukit Timah are structurally safe for residents. Although some non-structural damage was observed in the Hazel Park condominium, such as cracked glass and dislodged plaster, the BCA attributed these issues to the impact of the blast and pre-existing conditions. A team of 46 BCA engineers inspected the area within a 200-meter radius of the explosion and found all buildings to be structurally sound. Singaporean buildings are designed to withstand tremors, including blast effects.

This event marked Singapore's largest evacuation operation related to a WWII relic, with over 4,000 residents evacuated before the controlled detonation. The Singapore Army explained that the relic had to be disposed of in place due to its unstable condition after decades of deterioration, as moving it could have triggered an explosion.

Bomb Found 4,000 residents and 1,000 homes will be affected by a bomb disposal operation in Upper Bukit Timah on Tuesday.
The bomb was found last Wednesday at a construction site in Upper Bukit Timah Road and will be blown up there, as it is too dangerous to move it. This is the largest evacuation exercise involving the detonation of a World War II relic.
Residents of The Linear, Hazel Park, Hazel Park Terrace and Block 154 Gangsa Road, as well as shophouses in Upper Bukit Timah Road, must evacuate during the disposal operation from 8am to 7pm on Tuesday.
Businesses in the area are also affected, with a Shell service station nearby removing fuel from its underground tanks and closing the station temporarily.
Authorities have advised residents to keep their windows open as there is a chance of them shattering from the blast.
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has assured residents that Singapore's buildings are engineered to withstand tremors, including those caused by distant blasts.
The area within a 200m radius of the explosive will be cordoned off for the detonation. Surrounding roads – the Bukit Panjang flyover between Woodlands Road and Petir Road, and Upper Bukit Timah Road between Petir Road and Cashew Road – will also be closed from 11am to 7pm on Tuesday.
This is the fourth time in recent years that a bomb relic from World War II has been found and detonated in Singapore.
In 2016, a 100kg bomb relic was found and disposed of at a Mandai construction site. No civilian evacuations were reported.
In 2019, 600 residential units were evacuated when a 50kg World War II bomb was found and later detonated near the former site of popular nightclub Zouk.
In 2021, another bomb relic from the war was found at a temple construction site in Geylang, prompting the evacuation of 100 people.
Another bomb was found in 2020 at a corner terraced unit in Bishan, but only 12 households were affected.

Green job opportunities are growing in Southeast Asia, but a wide range of skills may be required.
A new report by Bridgespan, a non-profit organization, estimates that there could be as many as 30 million sustainability-linked jobs in Southeast Asia by 2030. The report identifies five sectors as key to the green economy transition: solar, electric mobility, built environment, sustainable farming, and waste management.
The trend of green job creation is attracting the attention of the corporate sector, with many companies creating new roles in sustainability and ESG. However, hiring managers are facing the challenge of finding qualified candidates for these roles, as the ESG industry is still in its early stages of development.
According to Dr Jeremy Fox, regional chief executive at Generation, a global non-profit that trains people in the green job sector, technical skills are important, but motivation and a strong growth mindset are what really determine employability and success on the job.
Dr Bo Bai, executive chairman and co-founder of Singapore-based fintech MVGX, agrees. He says that a candidate's genuineness and passion for sustainability is more important than having prior experience, but he acknowledges that this is "highly dependent" on the job scope.

5 things women may not know about egg freezing: How to prep your body, pregnancy success rate and more
Here are five things that women may not know about egg freezing:
1. The best age to freeze eggs is in your 20s or early 30s.
The quality and quantity of eggs decline with age, so it is best to freeze eggs when you are younger.
2. Frozen eggs can be stored for as long as you need them to be.
There is no time limit on how long frozen eggs can be stored. However, it is important to note that the success rate of egg freezing decreases with age.
3. There is no "best before" date on frozen eggs.
Studies have shown that frozen eggs do not age significantly over time. However, there are few studies on the outcome of frozen eggs in prolonged storage of 10 years.
4. You should prepare your body for egg freezing by eating a healthy diet, stopping smoking, and exercising regularly.
This will help to ensure that your eggs are in the best possible condition for freezing.
5. The success rate of egg freezing depends on a number of factors, including your age, the number of eggs retrieved, and your overall health.
The younger you are when you freeze your eggs, the higher your chances of success.
It is important to note that egg freezing is not a guarantee of pregnancy. However, it can be a good option for women who want to preserve their fertility until they are ready to have children.

Man Sentenced for Tragic Crime Involving 2-Year-Old Daughter
In a heartbreaking case reported by CNA (Channel NewsAsia), a man has been sentenced to 21-and-a-half years in jail and 18 strokes of the cane for the tragic death of his two-year-old daughter. The man, whose identity is protected due to court orders, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other charges related to the incident.
The court heard that the toddler, named Umaisyah, had been placed in foster care but was later returned to her parents' care in 2013. Tragically, Umaisyah suffered severe abuse at the hands of her parents, leading to her untimely death. The abuse included physical harm, neglect, and mistreatment.
The child's final moments were marked by a traumatic brain injury, caused when her father, under the influence of drugs, forcefully slapped her. Despite her life-threatening injuries, neither parent sought medical help, fearing legal consequences.
To hide their crime, the parents went to great lengths, even burning Umaisyah's body in a metal pot and keeping her remains hidden in their home for more than five years.
The court proceedings also revealed that the parents lied to authorities about Umaisyah's whereabouts, complicating efforts to discover the truth.
While the man has been sentenced for his role in this tragic incident, it serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of protecting and caring for our children.

Woman goes blind after dermal filler injection
A woman in Singapore has gone blind after receiving dermal fillers during an aesthetic treatment, according to the distributor of the product, Parvus.
Parvus said in a statement on Tuesday (September 19) that the incident was caused by an "inadvertent administration of the product into the bloodstream". The company added that its product, AestheFill, is safe and continues to be approved by Singapore's Health Sciences Authority (HSA).
The HSA and the Ministry of Health (MOH) are investigating the case, which Parvus reported on July 29.
Parvus said that it is cooperating with the HSA's investigation and that "product quality and patient safety are our utmost priorities".
The company also said that the batch of AestheFill in question has been tested and meets all safety standards.
This is the first local adverse event report for blindness resulting from dermal fillers, according to HSA.
Dermal fillers are classified in Singapore as Class D medical devices - the highest-risk class.
Parvus said that dermal filler treatments carry a risk of blood vessel occlusion and serious adverse effects, including the loss of eyesight. The company added that complications from aesthetic treatments are primarily due to the technique of administration and not the product.

Man jailed for working with SIA employee to obtain bribe
A freelance interior designer was sentenced to eight months' jail on Monday after he worked with a then-Singapore Airlines (SIA) employee to obtain a bribe of over $207,000 from a renovation firm manager.
The man, 38-year-old Rex Zhang Jiahao, was also ordered to pay a penalty of more than $103,700. He will spend an additional 100 days behind bars if he is unable to pay the amount.
Zhang and the SIA employee, 36-year-old Lionel Low Jun Jie, had known each other through reservist duties. At the time of the offence, Low was an assistant manager of properties (development) at SIA.
Low is no longer working for the carrier.
The court heard that Zhang and Low received the monies from Joseph Ang Kok Leng, 52, who was then with renovation firm LIN ID group, on six occasions from June to October 2019.
Zhang and Low had agreed to help Ang obtain a tender for the construction of a two-story pre-fabricated building consisting of 24 classrooms at SIA's training centre.
To help Ang's preparation, Zhang passed him confidential information from Low, including SIA's budget for the project as well as the expected timelines and milestones.
Low had also disclosed the budget of $2.5 million for the project, so that Zhang could advise Ang to quote a lower amount.
The project was later awarded to LIN ID for around $2.17 million. The company was also awarded a contract to supply furniture linked to it.
The classroom project - including the furniture contract - was the largest project that LIN ID had obtained and completed as at April 2021.
SIA then made progressive payments to LIN ID. After that, Ang would instruct LIN ID's employees to prepare the commission, said DPP Arvindren.
Court documents stated that the commission from Ang to Zhang and Low totalled more than $207,000, which was paid out in 2019 through six cheques.
Zhang pleaded guilty to a graft charge in August, while the cases involving Ang and Low are pending.

How to thrive at work if you have ADHD, autism or dyslexia
Neurodiversity is a term that refers to the natural variation in human brains and minds. It encompasses a wide range of conditions, including ADHD, autism, and dyslexia.
While neurodiversity can sometimes present challenges in the workplace, it can also be a source of strength and innovation. Many neurodivergent people have unique skills and perspectives that can benefit their employers.
In CNA's new limited podcast series "Wired Differently," senior journalist Grace Yeoh talks to experts and people with lived experience about neurodiversity in the workplace.
Here are some tips for thriving at work if you have ADHD, autism, or dyslexia:
• Be open about your neurodiversity with your employer. This can help to create a more understanding and supportive work environment.
• Communicate your needs to your manager. For example, if you need more time to complete tasks or a quieter place to work, let them know.
• Find a job coach or mentor. They can provide you with guidance and support as you navigate the workplace.
• Take advantage of reasonable accommodations. Your employer is required to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities. This could include things like flexible work arrangements, assistive technology, or modified job duties.
If you are an employer, there are a number of things you can do to create a more neurodiversity-friendly workplace:
• Educate yourself and your employees about neurodiversity. This will help to create a more understanding and inclusive workplace culture.
• Provide training on how to support neurodivergent employees. This could include training on how to communicate effectively, how to provide reasonable accommodations, and how to create a more sensory-friendly work environment.
• Be flexible and accommodating. Be willing to work with neurodivergent employees to find solutions that work for them.
By following these tips, both neurodivergent employees and employers can create a more supportive and inclusive workplace.

Scam cases in Singapore increase by 64.5% in first half of 2023
Scammers in Singapore defrauded victims of more than S$330 million in the first half of 2023, even as the number of scam cases increased by 64.5%, according to data released by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Wednesday (Sep 13).
The total amount lost by victims was slightly lower than the S$342.1 million reported in the same period last year. However, the number of cases increased from 13,576 to 22,339.
Young adults aged 20 to 39 were the most likely to be scammed, making up more than half of the total number of victims. They mostly fell prey to e-commerce scams, job scams and phishing scams.
The top five methods used by scammers to approach victims were through messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram, social media, phone calls, online shopping platforms and SMSes.
The SPF said it has been working closely with government agencies and private sector stakeholders to strengthen scam intervention measures to minimise victims' losses.
The public is advised to be wary of suspicious calls, emails and messages, and to verify the authenticity of any requests for money or personal information before responding.
Here are some tips to avoid scams:
• Be wary of unsolicited calls, emails and messages.
• Do not click on links or open attachments from unknown senders.
• Verify the authenticity of any requests for money or personal information before responding.
• Only provide your personal information to trusted sources.
• Keep your software up to date.
• Be aware of the latest scams.
If you think you have been scammed, contact the SPF immediately.
