HOME IN FOCUS: While not quite the Olympics, the National School Games (NSG) ignite competitive fervour and passion all the same. Singapore’s largest annual inter-school competition sees more than 55,000 student athletes from primary to junior college levels vying for more than 400 championship titles in sports such as football, rugby, basketball and floorball. The Straits Times captured moments of athletes pushing their limits as schoolmates, teachers and coaches spur them on from the sidelines over the eight-month season, which is drawing to a close.

HOME IN FOCUS: First of its kind in Singapore, the National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore Tooth Tissue Bank was set up in 2021 to support research on teeth for various purposes. This includes developing more resilient filling materials and using stem cells to regenerate nerves and blood vessels in teeth. Patients scheduled for tooth extraction at the centre are invited to donate their extracted tooth, and if they agree, it is collected for the Tooth Tissue Bank.

HOME IN FOCUS: In a world where digital entertainment is taking over our lives, Frankie Yeo still believes in the power of puppetry. The 61-year-old puppeteer and bespoke pupper crafter, whose stage name is Frankie Malachi, has been in the business for over 30 years. To date, Frankie has created more than 300 puppets and marionettes by hand. He also performs in puppet shows here and abroad. The Straits Times executive photojournalist Jason Quah meets the S’pore puppeteer giving life to the craft and finds out why puppetry is no child's play.

Even in an age of digital entertainment, Frankie Yeo still believes in the artistry and power of puppetry.
