Kelichap, the name of the street that the house is on, is the Malay reference for a type of sunbird that is often sighted in the area. Hier Architects’ (.architects ) Kelvin Lim drew inspiration from it when designing the property (named Dovecote House), saying that he “envisioned an intimate family home nestled among greenery and birdsong”.

A three-storey-high atrium separates the front section and the rear extension. Within this atrium is a succession of staggered suspended staircases that “peel” away from one another (the suspended staircase folds out from each other as it ascends to the higher storeys), but connect one level of the house to the next.

The thoughtful design interventions, together with the material palette and the overall layout, give the home a unique contemporary style that is perfect for the modern family.

RT+Q Architects ( ) distils Modernist expressions into Sentul Pavilion (), a glass-and-steel event space in a park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This multipurpose venue can be used for public and private events, such as tradeshows and exhibitions, brand launches or weddings with the park as a backdrop. It is placed within a 35-acre park in the Sentul Master Plan aimed at improving the living standard of the growing residential community.

The pavilion’s orientation ensures that the main space does not receive direct sunlight. The slope of the roof was conjured to lure the eye toward an existing tree line. The Pavilion embodies the firm’s Modernist influences, where symmetry, proportion and scale are vital hallmarks to creating harmonious, well-balanced architecture and spaces.

Kengo Kuma & Associates designed Japan’s first zero-energy hotel in the city of Saijo, famous for its abundant spring water. Created as a community hub, Itomachi Hotel 0 is part of the larger Itomachi Project conceived by the Kengo Kuma Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. Ideas came from workshops conducted with local residents and individual architectural competitions held for young architects. The new Nokha Village Community Centre, designed by Mumbai-based Sanjay Puri Architects , is a sweeping curvilinear structure that integrates multifunctional spaces including a courtyard, amphitheatre, library and museum.

The centre is located in Rajasthan’s desert region of Nokha, which encompasses 144 small villages. Studies of the vicinity and the current facilities in the village schools fuelled the need to build a community centre for all age groups.

Completed February 2024, the main 9,000sqft spiral building, whose façade is made of locally sourced sandstone, features an inclined garden with two varying slopes. Used for recreation and gatherings, the complex affords views of the surrounding desert landscape from the rooftop. (Photography: Vinay Panjwani)

LOEWE FOUNDATION announced the 30 artists shortlisted for the 2024 edition of the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize. The finalists’ works will be exhibited at Palais de Tokyo in Paris from 15 May until 9 June 2024.

Many of the works repurpose found or recycled materials, and there is a focus on the elevation and transformation of the everyday, such as rubber tyres and compressed wood. A combination of skill and mastery of technique, guided by intuition and chance, has been utilised in the creation of several works on this year’s shortlist and many feature organic, biomorphic forms that push materials to their physical limits to present new configurations and unique shapes not seen before.

This year’s finalists were chosen by a panel of experts from over 3,900 submissions by artisans representing 124 countries and regions. The finalists, representing 16 countries and regions, work across a range of mediums including ceramics, woodwork, textiles, furniture, paper, basketry, glass, metal, jewellery, lacquer and leather. The panel sought to identify the most outstanding works in terms of technical accomplishment, skills, innovation and artistic vision. Some of the works from Asia include:
· Miki Asai, Japan, ‘Still Life’, wood, paper, kashu, eggshell, seashell and mineral pigment, various dimensions.
· Chun Tai Chen, Taiwan Region, ‘In Simplicty’, paper, dye, glue, aluminium, stainless steel and brass, various dimensions.
· Weon Rhee (Jongwon Lee), Republic of Korea, ‘Primitive Structures (Botanical)’, PSL Beam (recycled wood), pearl coloured pigment and green pigment.

AXOR celebrates the 30th anniversary of its partnership with legendary designer Philippe Starck in 2024. AXOR and Philippe Starck, invited about 80 designers from Asia to celebrate this occasion at the Hansgrohe Innovation Parc in Shanghai on March 26.

Philippe Starck and AXOR have worked together extensively on bathroom design over 30 years, producing numerous pieces that are both technologically and aesthetically innovative.

During the event, Mr Olivier Sogno, the Vice President Business Unit AXOR and Vice President Corporate Marketing Hansgrohe SE, engaged in a dialogue with Mr Starck, and reviewed the classic designs created over the past 30 years.

Starck elaborated that his collaboration with AXOR has been like family from the very beginning, and they worked together with the same respect and appreciation for water.

Starck said, “Designers have the dual responsibility of meeting the utility of a product, and then using their own imagination and creativity to achieve a balance between utility and aesthetics.”

Borderless House in Malaysia, is the brainchild of celebrated Malaysian practice Formzero () in collaboration with MOA Architects and Caleb Ong Design. The moniker is an oxymoron – there are 60 sheer concrete walls in the entire scheme – that reflects the architects’ poetic approach, as elaborated by Lee Cherng Yih of Formzero. He used classical Chinese garden design principles to define privacy and space for the owners and their family, and to simultaneously create interconnectivity with each other and nature. link in bio to find out more.
