The Cursed Jenglot

In Central Java, a story tells of a young man who bought a Jenglot from a black market dealer, hoping it would bring him power and influence. However, the Jenglot turned out to be cursed. Shortly after bringing it home, the man began experiencing terrible nightmares, illness, and a string of bad luck. He consulted a spiritual healer, who revealed that the Jenglot had been improperly consecrated and was harboring a vengeful spirit. The healer performed a purification ritual, releasing the spirit and rendering the Jenglot powerless. The man then buried the Jenglot far away and vowed never to meddle with such objects again.

Moral of the story : This story warns of the risks of acquiring magical items without proper consecration.

The Sorcerer's Jenglot

In another tale from Bali, a powerful sorcerer was rumored to own a Jenglot. The sorcerer used it to amplify his powers, allowing him to cast spells and control spirits. However, he had to feed the Jenglot with blood regularly to maintain its power. As the story goes, the sorcerer grew careless and failed to provide offerings, causing the Jenglot to turn on him. It was said that the Jenglot drained his life force and left him a withered husk. Villagers found the Jenglot beside his lifeless body and buried it deep in the ground to prevent it from harming others.

Moral of the story : This story serves as a cautionary tale about greed and the dangers of meddling with supernatural forces.

For the next 5 days, Ajarn will be sharing about stories on Jenglot and it how it helps devotees.

Jenglot is a fascinating and mysterious entity
in Indonesian folklore, often associated with supernatural phenomena. These small, humanoid figures, typically only a few inches in size, are believed to be mystical beings or artifacts imbued with powerful magic. Here are a few popular Indonesian stories and beliefs surrounding Jenglot:

The Jenglot Found in the Forest

One of the most famous stories involves a group of villagers in Java who discovered a Jenglot in a remote forest. According to the tale, they stumbled upon a small box that emitted a strange energy. Upon opening it, they found a mummified, doll-like creature with sharp teeth and long hair. After bringing it back to the village, strange occurrences began: crops started failing, animals went missing, and villagers reported seeing shadows moving at night. A local shaman was called to investigate and claimed that the Jenglot was a guardian of the forest, angered by being removed from its natural habitat. To appease the Jenglot, offerings of blood were made, after which the disturbances stopped.

Moral of the story : This story highlights the belief that Jenglot must be respected and not disturbed, as they are linked to ancient mystical forces.

Is money ever enough?

1. Impermanence of Wealth
- Anicca (Impermanence): Buddhism teaches that all things, including wealth, are impermanent. Wealth can come and go, and clinging to it can lead to suffering. Approach wealth with a sense of detachment is a wise thing to do.

2. Desire and Attachment
- Craving (Tanha): The Buddha identified craving as a principal cause of suffering. The pursuit of wealth can often come from desire, which may never be fully satisfied. This endless chase can lead to dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
- The Middle Way: Buddhism advocates for a balanced approach to material possessions. While it is not wrong to seek wealth, attachment to it can lead to suffering.

3. True Happiness
- Happiness Beyond Wealth: Buddhism teaches that true happiness comes from within, through inner peace, ethical living, and spiritual development. Material wealth alone does not guarantee lasting happiness.
- Generosity (Dana): Sharing wealth with others is emphasized in Buddhism. Acts of generosity not only benefit those in need but also cultivate a sense of fulfillment and joy for the giver.

4. Moral Responsibility
- Ethical Acquisition: The means by which wealth is acquired matters. Buddhism encourages earning a living through ethical means, avoiding harm to others in the process.
- Wealth as a Tool: Wealth can be seen as a tool for promoting well-being and helping others. The focus should be on how wealth can be used for good rather than simply accumulating for oneself.

5. Mindfulness and Contentment
- Mindfulness Practice: Cultivating mindfulness helps individuals recognize their relationship with wealth and material possessions. This awareness can foster a sense of contentment with what one has, rather than a constant yearning for more.
- Satisfaction with Simple Pleasures: Buddhism encourages appreciating simple joys in life, which can lead to a deeper sense of satisfaction that transcends material wealth.

21/12/2024

Phra Yom is a significant figure in Thai Buddhist tradition, associated with the afterlife and the judgment of souls. Here’s an overview of who Phra Yom is and his role in Thai beliefs:

1. Identity and Role
- Phra Yom, also known as Yama, is the Lord of Death and ruler of the underworld in Thai Buddhism. His character is derived from ancient Hindu mythology, where Yama is the god of death and justice.
- In Thai culture, Phra Yom is tasked with judging the souls of the deceased, determining their fate based on their actions during their lifetime.

2. Judgment Process
- Upon death, a soul is brought before Phra Yom for judgment. He assesses the individual’s good and bad deeds, often symbolized by a balance scale.
- The outcome of this judgment determines whether the soul will experience rebirth in a favorable realm, face punishment in hell, or achieve liberation.

3. Cultural Significance
- Phra Yom embodies the moral teachings of Buddhism, emphasizing the importance of living a virtuous life.
- His figure represents the inevitability of death and the consequences of one’s actions, serving as a reminder to act with kindness and integrity.

4. Rituals and Practices
- Some Thai Buddhist practices involve offerings and ceremonies aimed at appeasing Phra Yom, seeking his guidance for the deceased or for oneself.
- During funerals, prayers and rituals are dedicated to him, reinforcing the belief in his role as a protector and judge of souls.
