Glad Fettisdagen!

Today is Fettisdagen, also known as “Fat Tuesday” in Sweden! This holiday is synonymous with the delicious semla, which is a sweet pastry filled with whipped cream cardamom, and a sweet almond paste in the middle. The semla is a seasonal treat, and swedes usually consume at least one a day until the start of Lent, which is Fat Tuesday! Have you tried a semla yet? 🍽

Now back to our regular posts:

It’s January 13th today, which marks the end of the Christmas season in Sweden! This day js also known as Tjugondag Knut or Saint Knut’s Day, and is kind of like a ‘deadline’ for Christmas trees to be taken down and Christmas decorations to be stored for next Christmas 🎄

Now time to go on with life 😉

Today is winter solstice, which is also the shortest day of the year in Sweden, and the rest of the Northern Hemisphere! 🌒 The sun sets at 14:48 in Stockholm today 😴 In some parts of Sweden which are above the Arctic Circle, the sun doesn’t rise over the horizon during the entire month of December! Winter solstice also marks the start of longer days with more sunlight ☀️

How do you celebrate winter solstice if any at all? Winter solstice is also celebrated in Chinese culture and is called 冬至 (pronounced dōng zhì). A common practice on this day for Northern Chinese would be to eat dumplings and for Southern Chinese, to have rice balls called 汤圆 (tāng yuán) 🥣

In Sweden, an important part of Christmas festivities is the food! 🍽 Christmas food in Sweden is usually represented as a buffet of hot and cold dishes, sides and lots of sweets! 🍬 Swedish people usually gather together for a large meal called the Julbord, which translates to Christmas table.

Traditional foods are enjoyed in several rounds during this meal. The first ‘round’ at the Julbord is at the herring table 🐟 Then comes salmon prepared in different ways, eggs, caviar, shellfish and sometimes Skagen toast. Other must-haves at Julbord are meatballs, sausages, and potatoes. One of the most classic dishes is the Christmas ham, which is first booked, then painted and glazed with a mixture of egg, breadcrumbs and mustard before putting it in the oven. And the final ‘round’ would be the sweets! Most restaurants offering Julbord would have a ‘sweet table’ or ‘sweet room’ where you’d get to pick from a large variety of sweets to end this big meal! 🍾

Each year on December 13th, a candlelit Lucia procession that is as integral to Swedish culture as midsummer takes place. Lucia celebrations can be traced back to the 4th century and and represents one of the foremost cultural traditions in Sweden, with their clear reference to life in the peasant communities of old: darkness and light, cold and warmth.

Lucia is an ancient mythical figure with an abiding role as a bearer of light in the dark Swedish winters. Swedes enjoy the candle processions, drink glögg (spices, warm mulled wine), and eat traditional lussekatter (saffron buns). The word lussekat means Lucia bun, and this pastry is commonly found in my shapes, with the one in S-shape being most common.

Do you recognise this gold coin?

It is the Nobel coin, with Alfred Nobel, the Swede behind the Nobel Prize engraved on it. Today Dec 5, it is Nobel Day and here’s a little about the man himself.

Alfred Nobel was not only the man behind the Nobel Prize, but he is also the inventor of dynamite! 🧨 Blasting was popular during the industrial era for building tunnels and railroads. Nobel’s invention of dynamite was a more reliable explosive charge as compared to anything previous. As a results, the demand for dynamite was large and Nobel accumulated huge fortunes from it.

Alfred Nobel had no family of his own and had not one to inherit his fortune. Upon his death in 1896, Nobel’s will stated that his wish was to award money to those who had benefitted mankind. Therefore, a large part of his enormous fortune went into what we today call the Nobel Prize 🏆

Last Sunday marks three weeks before Christmas and it’s when many people in Sweden light the second candle of the Advent candlestick, also called the adventsljusstake in Swedish 🕯

The word ‘advent’ is a Latin inspired word that is translated to ‘arrival’, referring to Jesus’s arrival, his birth that took place on Christmas Day according to Christianity.

For most Americans, every fourth Thursday of November is Thanksgiving day but it is also the National Day for Mourning for many Native Americans.

The annual observance aims to educate the public about Native Americans in the United States, notably the Wampanoag and other tribes of the Eastern United States and raise awareness towards historical and ongoing struggles facing Native American tribes.
