Polarized vs. Pyramidal Training (what's BEST for Cycklist?)

What's BEST for Judo?

For periodization in Judo athletes, a combination of these approaches can be used to optimize performance and fitness gains. For example, a polarized approach can be used during the off-season to build a solid aerobic base, followed by a pyramidal approach during the pre-season to improve lactate threshold and overall endurance, and finally, a sweet spot approach during the competition season to maintain fitness and optimize performance.

It's important to note that the most effective approach will depend on an individual's fitness goals, training history, and personal preferences. Therefore, it's recommended to experiment with different approaches and monitor progress to determine the most effective approach for each individual athlete.

Motor Learning: "Block vs Random Practice"

The video discusses the study of how people acquire skill through practice, known as motor learning. The video also explains that decades of research show that there are more effective ways to practice than others.

Specifically, Block practice and random practice are two different practice structures used in motor learning. Block practice involves repeating the same skill in a fixed situations/drills, while random practice involves practicing the same skill in a random situations, more like the game is compeated.

In block practice, the learner focuses on one skill at a time, which can lead to rapid gains in performance but limited transfer when variability is introduced.

On the other hand, random practice involves practicing different skills or movements in a random order, which slows learning but improves retention and transfer.

Decades of research show that random practice is more effective for skill acquisition than block practice. Random practice can lead to accelerated learning and better game performance.

However, it is important to note that blocked practice may be necessary in the early stages of learning when the learner cannot consistently repeat good technique.

Last year I did publish this book "Pedagogical Methods for Judo".

Pedagogical Methods for Judo: offers you as a Judo trainer the essential from both theoretical learning theories, to more practical guidance for training methods.

In the book you will also find teoriers about motor skill development, what's the difference between motor skills, coordination and techniques, but also how technical development is divided and the importance of an individual's special technique.

Then some more practical knowledge about how we can teach, and how we can modify the pedagogic for different types of knowledge levels for our athletes.

In the end two models on how progression in judo can be developed, and how different judo training methods are connected to each other.

At last every training method is further described and explained for how we as trainers can modify the methods to be as adopted to the purpose of our trainings.

This is therefore a book that is based on theory but explaining the theory, and how it is practical and how it's relative to judo training methods.

Later this year a new book will be published...!

Long-Term Athlete Development

This picture is verry extensive and show the differences in developmental stages for female and male athletes.

In this picture you can see the growth velocity curve for avarege maturity, there we can see that female athletes reach peak velocity growth at the age of 12, in general two years earlier than male athletes that reach it at the age of 14.

The same for peak strength velocity development where female athletes reach it at the age of 13 while male athletes reach it at the age of 15 in general.

In this picturer you will also find abilities that important to empizise in different stages of development, where to introduce these abilities, wher to primary empesis them, and when tho maintain them.

This information can be the differences between optimal developed athletes and not, but thru this picture you as a coach can sort out and prioritate right in an athlet/group specific stage of development.

Of course you can not leve the other abilities hang and not training them. But this will maby give you the knowledge wich abilities is more important to prioritate in a specific age group!
