Boodja Dwordak Wirn means ‘Bringing Country’s Spirit Back to Life’. This community project, delivered in two parts over 2.5 years, is all about coming together to care for and connect with the Country we now share, and to create positive change for the future.

This will be an opportunity to immerse yourself in a trail of light installations, soundscapes and community sculptures that invite you to see Country through the eyes of the Traditional Custodians, the Wudjari Nyungar community.

This very special on-Country night-time event is a sensory experience that encourages you to stop, look, listen and, most importantly, to feel your own connections to this country.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We thank our generous project sponsors, partners, and supporters: Lotterywest , Indigenous Languages and Arts Program, Esperance Ag Fund, Culture and the Arts WA (Department of local government sports and cultural industries) and the Shire of Esperance .

Special thanks to artists Sharyn Egan, Colleen Frost, Naomi Stanitzki and Mylene van Heijster, composer Clint Bracknell and choreographer Kyle Morrison and staff and students from Esperance Stars Foundation and Esperance Clontarf Academy and to the many community members and artists who have contributed to this project."(1)

Whadjuk Noongar Elder, Len Collard's Latest Film Sheds Light on "Welcome to Country" Significance.

In a powerful new short film produced by Inclusion WA, Whadjuk Noongar Elder, Len Collard shares the profound importance of "Welcome to Country" and the Rainbow Serpent, known to the Whadjuk as Wagyul.

The film delves into the cultural significance of Welcome to Country, a tradition where Traditional Custodians welcome visitors to their ancestral lands. Uncle Len explains its depth, highlighting the connection between Boodja, mob, and wirin (spirit).

At the heart of the film is Wagyul, the Rainbow Serpent, a revered ancestral being central to Whadjuk Noongar culture. Len shares stories of Wagyul's creation, its role in shaping the land, and its enduring spiritual significance.

Through Uncle Len's storytelling, the film humanizes the often-misunderstood concept of Welcome to Country, transforming it from a mere protocol to a meaningful exchange. It emphasizes the importance of respect, reciprocity, and recognition of Australian Aboriginal sovereignty.

Uncle Len's wisdom and warmth make the film an invaluable resource for educators, organizations, and individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of Noongar culture.

Watch Uncle's inspiring film to gain a deeper appreciation for Whadjuk Noongar culture and the significance of Welcome to Country.

Headspace Convenes Cultural Advisory Group to Support Young Australian Aboriginal People on Menang Country.

Yesterday, Headspace, a leading community organization, hosted a pivotal cultural advisory group meeting aimed at improving the lives of young Australian Aboriginal people living on Menang Country. The gathering brought together esteemed community leaders, Elders, and representatives from key organizations to share their wisdom and expertise.

Headspace Clinical Lead, Carl Heslop expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m excited to see so many people here to help us do some work.” This sentiment was echoed by Aunty Olivia Roberts, who emphasized the urgency of the issue, saying, “Our youth are crying out for help; they are our future.”

Aunty Averil Dean an 86-year-old respected Elder, shared her lifelong observations and concerns. “They need people who will support them, show them some pride, empower them to become leaders. I carry a burden for all the children; these kids don’t want to be bad. I have seen it all my life. We need to work together.”

This marked the third “Yarning Space” where Headspace has gathered valuable insights from community leaders and Elders. The meeting was attended by a diverse group of individuals and organizations, including Government representative's, a Lead Agency Youth Focus representative, South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, Kadajinny Aboriginal Corporation, Kinjarling Basketball and Lawrence Riley, ex-CEO of Yued Aboriginal Corporation and current Assistant Ombudsman who shared these thoughts:

“I think we’ve all been through journeys and as the proud people we are today in our own individual right with the resilience that we have acquired through what is still hard times: just showing that resilience and utilising that as our foundation going forward to re-shape and make a difference, has got to be a collective approach; we can’t continue to be walking alone. As first peoples internationally, we withstand the challenges of what is society”
