Making small adjustments to our Chesapeake Light Craft: Wooden Boat Kits Rhode Runner for a more social cockpit 🍻
All you wanted to know about running a Youtube Sailing Channel
Ever wondered what it's like to run a Youtube Sailing Channel?
This week I dive deep into what filming gear we use, how we edit our videos and how much money we make on YouTube.
Curious?

When looking for Polar Seal II, there are a thousand criteria that we are looking for, which all fall into there are 3 main categories.
In this video, we explore them through 5 boats that we had the occasion to visit at the Dusseldorf boat show.
Which ones are your criteria? And which one is your dream or realistic boat choice?! :)
⚠️⛵️ Final hours to get our Bright Trip course “Sailing the World” at the early bird discounted price! (🔗Link in bio)
But also, let me share with you the story behind this shot because… I don’t think I ever told it and you should never believe what you see on social media 😆🙈😅
It was 5AM on a bright and early morning in Sardina (Cala Gonone to be exact) and we were starting to head towards the North Wester tip of Sicily.
The passage was going to be an overnighter with not-so-great conditions, with a mix of no wind and hardcore upwind sailing.
But it looked better than anything we had seen in the forecast in a while and we had friends waiting for us down the road in Catania, so off we went.
As often when we are on an early departure and the weather is less than exciting, Ryan isn’t in the most excited mood and I can feel a little storm brewing in the atmosphere onboard 🌪️😅
So naturally, he isn’t exactly thrilled when I announce my intention to fly the drone as we departed (be nice to him though, we had been up since 4AM and Ryan doesn’t drink coffee 😉)
I prep the drone, we raise the anchor, and Ryan begrudgingly launches the flying camera while I pilot it out of the way to let it hover over Polar Seal while we raise the sails.
That’s the moment I realize that the drone battery isn’t fully charged and I only have a few minutes to grab a couple of shots 🙈🙉🥹
The storm onboard is now full-blown as I fumble to pilot the drone back onboard and almost crash the drone in our spreaders.
Needless to say, we didn’t speak to each other for the first hours of the passage. And apart from that moment, very little of that passage was caught on film (though to be fair, Ryan went back to bed once we were underway, and was in a much better mood when he woke up again).
This shot is still my favorite though, and as I am writing this, I wonder if Ryan even remembers that day, hahaha 😂
We talk about what life o
In 2015, I had a life changing Whatsapp chat with a guy I had met on Tinder 2 months prior.
That conversation was about an article he had read about a couple our age (hi @mattandjessicasailing !) who one day decided that they were going to sail the World as a lifestyle, although they knew very little about boats.
Naturally, within 5 minutes, we decided that we were going to do the same thing.
So almost 8 years later, here we are! 25 000 nautical miles later, we are rich of new life experiences, memories from travels all over the World, lifelong friendships, and of course, a passion for sailing and our lifestyle.
But that transition didn't happen overnight, and even back then, we didn't think that there was a good resource for us, total newbies, for how we could get started in the sailing life.
So as a content creator in the last couple of years, I REALLY wanted to create that resource.
(Also very few of you know this about me, but I create courses as a JOB. Literally, companies hire me to create courses for them.)
A year ago, we were approached by @bright.trip, a company co-founded by my own Youtube hero @johnny.harris, who asked us if we'd be interested in working together on a beginner's course on how to get started in the sailing life.
MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN 😆
Bright Trip specializes in the production of high-quality courses about travel, culture and adventure, and no one else could have created a comprehensive course on a topic as technical as sailing and boats.
A year later, here we are, putting this (big) baby into the World, and we couldn't be prouder of all the work the team accomplished.
It is a 3 parts course of 37 lessons divided into 8 chapters that cover everything from basic knowledge and how to buy a boat, all the way to equipping the boat, maritime navigation, weather, passage planning, how to clear customs, budgeting, dealing with seasickness, mental preparations, etc...
If you are an aspiring cruiser but do not know where to st
One year of work, 400 pages of script, 37 lessons divided into 8 chapters and 3 parts.
6 months of writing, 2 full weeks of shooting in Antigua and Bermuda, 6 months of post-production and a team of over 10 people working to make this the best resources for aspiring cruisers.
Part 1 of our online course about how to get started Sailing the World comes out in a couple of days and you guys…
It is the best thing we have ever done as creators and we are so proud of all the work that everyone put in it!!! 🥳🤩💃🏻(But also I am terrified and super nervous about how it will be received because we’ve put so much work into it so pray for us 😆)
Go to brighttrip.com/sailing to get notified and take advantage of the early bird offer before Christmas!!!
I could have made a video about our participation to the 2022 edition of the Annapolis Boat Show and show you all kind of fancy boats and equipment but frankly... the internet is full of that already.
Instead, here is a very important and meaningful piece about sharing cultural experiences and forming friendships with famous people. How to approach them and how to make an impression.
Our latest Episode is up on Youtube at: https://youtu.be/2Pl-irEc3lQ
With the participation of our dear friend James from Sailing Zingaro and so many other well-known faces.
Welcome to the skincare hour with Sophie & Jordan!
Because when doing any type of water activity, mineral sunscreen is generally considered more environmentally friendly than chemical sunscreen, and using a tinted one will avoid you looking like a ghost on all those beautiful post-dive pictures you’ll take 👻
(And because yes. At the very core of our personalities were two beauty influencers who just waited to be unleashed…)
Full video out on YouTube with the gracious participation of Project Atticus !
Sometimes, you deal with an emotional response by crying, and other times, you deal with it by eating a sh*tty frozen pizza.
Who relates? 🙃
In this week’s video, Ryan weighs his options to continue or not his crossing as he decides to interrupt his transatlantic and stop in Cape Verde.
Now out on YouTube 🙂
Welcome to Bonaire and the Mecca of diving!
I wish I could tell that all we’ve been doing is honing our new skills right under our Polar Seal and at the 100 dive spots around the island, but...
For the three weeks that we have been here, we have just enjoyed the feeling of getting our lives back.
The slow pace of boat living, breakfasts in the cockpit, sundowners and the gentle roll of the boat as we go to bed...
(Although I gotta be honest, it’s not “gentle” everyday 😅)
I don’t think I realized how much I missed living onboard Polar Seal (under less “stressful circumstances”) until we arrived here.
It feels like we’re getting over the hump, and the relief is HUGE.
In other news, Ryan and I decided to acquire some dive gear (against our initial thought that we don’t have room for it onboard) and oh Bonaire, we are coming for you ☺️
The world of sailing YouTube is full of bikini clickbait and I’ve always thought we should do our part!
When Ryan was too lazy to go grab his swim trunks before jumping in the Atlantic Ocean, he asked me if I could blur his niblets.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED I said.
Enjoy Ryan in a bikini in today’s video, on YouTube 😘

The secret to beautiful hair on a sailboat...
Ok guys, at long last, we can share with you THE secret to beautiful hair onboard a sailboat.
At the request of a viewer, this week's episode is a special "Ryan's tech corner" for people like me (Sophie), who did not understand a single thing about electrics before hopping onboard.
The very basics of how we are able to power Polar Seal and the secret to beautiful hair onboard at this link: https://ryanandsophie.com/basics-of-sailboat-electrics/
It's a goodie ;)
Finally, WE ARE BACK!!! 🎊🎉🍾
We've been back onboard Polar Seal since last Friday, and we're already at work. This season, we're beefing up our girl so much that we are wondering if there will be any upgrade left to do in the future 😅
Although we won't be at sea again for another few weeks (upgrades oblige), we'll be back with weekly video updates very shortly.
And to officially start this new video season, we will be live on Youtube from Almerimar this Sunday (March 10th) from 4:00PM CET (Central European Time), aka 9AM CT (Iowa, Minnesota, Texas...)
We hope to see you then!
Thanks for coming!
A few days late, but a big THANK YOU!!! to everyone who came to our Des Moines meetup this weekend! Ryan and I had a so much fun meeting all of you!!! 🎉🎊
They say Des Moines is where all shows are getting tested, so maybe this was the start of something big ;)
