South Sudan United Movement (SSUM), a political organisation with clear vision and mission, is seen by so many of them to be the most individualized Movement.

Time and Transitional period will magnify the realities.

10/04/2020

South Sudan United Movement (SSUM) is a political & military movement established after the signing of compromise peace agreement (CPA 2) between the SPLM IO and SPLM IG on 2015 in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

The founder of this organisation was the late Gen. Peter Gatdet Yaka who later on decided to fight both the SPLM IO and the SPLM IG who formed the Transitional Government of National Unity as a result of the CPA 2 where Salva Kiir was the President and Dr Riek Machar his first deputy.

After what they called dogfight in the State House J1 on July 2016 in Juba between the two, the CPA 2 collapsed and the new peace deal the Revitalised peace agreement was later on brokered by IGAD organisation led by H.E Special Envoy Amb. Dr Ismail Wais who managed to sign the cessation of hostilities agreement (COHA) in 2017.

The process was transferred to Khartoum, Sudan and the talks was mainly focusing on the power sharing and the security arrangements which were the two chapters who failed the whole peace agreement.

Sudanese government under President Omer Al Bashir led the talks in Khartoum after several attempts made in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. the parties to the talks include:

1) TGoNU led by President Salva Kiir.

2) SPLM/A IO led by Dr Riek Machar.

3) SSOA a coalition of 8 parties including SSUM.

4) SPLM - FDs led by Gen. Pagan Amum who later rejected the agreement.

5) OPP coalition of different political parties in South Sudan.

The parties agreed under the Sudanese led process and the Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity is established on March 2020 with 5 VPs, 35 National Ministers, 10 deputies, 550 MPs and the revert to 10 States with 3 administrative areas governed in the Presidency.

The unfortunate death of the founder created a gap and disagreements over the leadership within the movement. Deputy Chairman Hon. Denay Jok was temporarily appointed by the LC to serve as the interim leader for 3 months before elections. After the 3 months elapsed, the interim leader unilaterally confirmed himself the Chair and the Commander in Chief which was later refuted by the majority of the members of the LC citing lacks of constitutional procedures, hence the dispute had started. The LC went on electing Engineer James Rab as the Chairman. This was the beginning of the division and split within the movement where Hon. Denay remain a Chair of his faction without structure and Eng. James led the largest part of the movement recognised by SSOA. It's clear that most of the parties split as a result of the competition over the positions allocated by the agreement. The government is formed and parties still holding on their differences regardless of RTGoNU binding them.

The question is, who will be the Chair of SSUM among the two after the complete formation of the government ?

SSUM’s suspension by alliance is illegal – spokesman has Said.

South Sudan United Movement (SSUM), a suspended member of the opposition alliance, said that the suspension of its membership is illegal.

The rebel group led General Peter Gatdet Yaka was suspended by the opposition alliance last week, for signing a power sharing deal with South Sudan government and SPLM-IO led by former vice president Riek Machar in Khartoum.

The South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) is a consortium of nine opposition entities.

“The purported suspension of SSUM is illegal. The decision was taken by individuals who hold a grudge against SSUM or General Gatdet,” Juan Dar, the spokesman of the SSUM group told Radio Tamazuj today.

He further said the decision was taken by Gabriel Changon and Lam Akol without involving all leaders of the opposition alliance. Juan pointed out that the opposition alliance is weaker at the ongoing peace talks than it’s been before.

“Initially we agreed to be united as members of the opposition alliance, but most of the leaders who came here left the venue of the talks, so I can say that the alliance is divided,” he said.

“FDs now are still part of SSOA, but they are being given their own ministries as a separate group. Do you think they are still members of SSOA?” he asked.

The opposition official pointed out that his group decided to sign the proposed power sharing agreement after observing that the alliance is weak and divided.

“We were not ware when many leaders of the opposition alliance left the venue of the talks in Khartoum and travelled. SSOA is no longer a legal body that can suspend any entity that has its own policy and plan,” Juan said.

“We cannot be suspended by two people. SSOA does not comprise of two people only. So, I can say that what is happening within the opposition alliance is not different from what is happening in Juba,” he said.
