Today, the name giving ceremony of the ultra large container vessel MSC Michel Cappellini took place at the MSC Gate of the Container Terminal Bremerhaven. We are glad that we could assist the event thanks to the invitation of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). Our director Jan Tersteegen (that you can see in front of the ship to give a sense of her size) represented our institution in Bremerhaven and brought back this full-hull 1:1250 scale miniature of the ship built for the occasion by the Italian workshop Fratelli Pazzaglia. In the second picture, the model stands on the display of our 1:1250 scale diorama of the Container Terminal Bremerhaven, on deck 9 of the museum.

The MSC Michel Cappellini belongs to the container ships with the highest TEU (standard container) capacity worldwide to this date. They are the MSC Irina type, with a capacity for 24.346 TEU or 240.739 DWT. They are 399,9 m long and 61,5 m wide. They are powered by a Wärtsilä 11W-X92 diesel engine. Their construction was ordered in 2020 at the Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co Ltd. All ships are classified by the agency DNV. The first ship, MSC Irina, was delivered in March this year. The MSC Michael Cappellini is the third sister ship of this class, that is planned to be composed by a total of 6. The last two ships are still under construction. All ships are to serve in the Lines of the MSC between Europe and Eastern Asia.
