seasonal is an indie rock act from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, formed in 2014. Drawing inspiration from bands like American Football, Death Cab for Cutie, Moving Mountains, and Slowdive, they are known for their blend of atmospheric, twinkling guitars and heartfelt lyrics.
The album "The Summers to Come", which seasonal released on April 21, sounds beautiful and melancholic, but is perceived quite differently if you know its background. All the material for the release was recorded more than a year ago, but in April 2020 tragedy happened: the band's frontman Ethan McDonnell died from complications after surgery. It took seasonal a long time to gather their thoughts and decide what to do with the material — and in the end, they decided to release it anyway. After that the band's future remains unknown.
"It captures everything this band has been all in one album", says the band. "Following Ethan’s unexpected loss last April, the album had taken on new meaning because it is the last album as seasonal, or at least seasonal in its current iteration. We have no idea what’s next, if anything, as this band as it’s been".
Seasonal worked on the album with Cody Prang, producer and audio engineer and a longtime band's friend. They emphasize that a huge role in the release of "The Summers to Come" was played by the fact that it was helped to release by friends. "Between the engineering, mixing, album art and music video, it’s all been close friends that we’ve worked with to bring the album to life. We’ve always prided ourselves on portraying an honest and authentic sound and image, and we feel that is only enhanced by working with people whom we know personally."
