The articular surfaces (lat. Fácies articuláres) of the articulating bones are covered with hyaline (rarely fibrous) articular cartilage 0.2–0.5 mm thick. Constant friction maintains smoothness, which facilitates the sliding of the articular surfaces, and the cartilage itself, thanks to its elastic properties, softens shocks, acting as a buffer [1].
