This episode is about production gimmicks. In a good sense. When a song's catchy elements are achieved by using production creativity as an instrument, a song becomes fun to listen to beyond a musical perspective.

Aldn's 2023 release is a bouquet of exactly those type of songs. Braveau!

Airy voices have a lot of options when it comes to their surrounding instrumental layers, or they can even be layers themselves. On Julie Byrne's new 2023 album "The Greater Wings", her voice takes on multiple roles, and the production cradles every second of her vulnerability, turning it into a massive yet peaceful and transparent landscape. Check out the song "Summer Glass".

Nothing is purely new anymore. But when an artist manages to combine the right ingredients to sound new, the combination can become a subgenre, or at least be fun enough to keep curiosity afloat. Strange Ranger manages that with their new album Pure Music...and in my opinion an alternate title should have been "Pure Production" because the band (also responsible for the production) really excelled at that.

Today's episode is about surprise. Finding an industrial-sized basket of easter eggs without even looming for them when you listen to something totally unexpected that you wouldn't normally be curious to try is a rewarding experience. Especially when production plays such a big role. Music is so fun when you not only like what you hear, but can also hear the possibilities where it might go.

It is time for metal. A lot of metal is pretty straightforward, but we live in an age where production has to overshadow pure subgenres, since everything has already been done, more or less.

Then there are also metal bands that up their game in songwriting, and need no bells and whistles. The only thing is: the instruments have to remain clear. That is what Horrendous achieves on their latest album, aside from phenomenal songwriting.

Alaska Reid is freshly on my radar, as a result of Youtube's sidebar wonders rabbithole digging one late night. I was enticed with the PRODUCTION possibilities that were explored for a voice such as hers; vulnerable, somewhat sleepy, somewhat frail, very expressive.

My curiosity was rewarded and this year's album Disenchanter instantly became a case study. Hear my brief take on it in this here video.

First episode of "Foreign Humor Production Favorites" is about the impact that the latest album had upon me (The Ballad of Darren, 2023).

What I heard was unexpected, yet I was not surprised by the genius total package. Mad eme take notes on what I can do with voices rhat seem unidimensional or even a challenge to work with, especially if they seem limited in genre.

!NEW CONTENT ALERT!

The end of the year marks the start of a fruitful relationship between Foreign Humor and a nationally renowned podcast channel, and promises the surfacing of many fun projects started in 2023. Of course this is just the beginning, but I have learned a lot about producing this year.

Since a lot of time is being spent listening to music of all genres, I decided to start a new feature in which I briefly analyze music that caught my attention due to its production. I talk as I learn, it's the best eay to filter the new and exciting information. I hope this new weekly series is enjoyable, useful and perhaps even sexually arousing for you.
