A story in The Times and The Sunday Times is sure to be of interest to people in the short-term lettings sector. Here is the link: https://rb.gy/10r5w (paywall).

Some comments:

The article referenced data about the number of Airbnb properties in holiday hotspots, particularly Devon, the Lake District and Edinburgh. There was little mention of the economic impact of these properties, notably the billions they generate for local workers, businesses and the wider economy. For the most part, the article comprised of people who live in areas that rely on tourism complaining about tourism.

There was little focus on house building in these communities, including the fact central government has failed – year after year – to meet house building targets. The lack of social housing development was also forgotten.

Disgruntled residents were quoted saying holiday home owners had made it impossible for them to rent. However, there appears to be no evidence that these residents could afford the properties they complain about in the private rented sector. Interestingly, one of the people quoted worked as a cleaner for numerous holiday homes. She appears to be campaigning against her employers.

The writer of the piece, Matt Rudd, signed off by saying he had enjoyed a few nights in an Airbnb property.

"Back in North Devon I check out of my £80-a-night five-star Airbnb, a spotless converted studio flat above a garage at the bottom of the owner's garden. Naughty, I know, given the weeks I've spent talking to displaced and disgruntled campaigners desperate for change. But it was cheaper than a hotel room and a hotel room doesn't have a kitchen, a living room and a view of a lovely river. It was a great place to stay and I'm glad I chose it from about a hundred Airbnbs available in that area."

Got to recreate one of the most iconic moments in football ⚽️ history. The first artist to be given permission to paint Bobby Moore and Pele embracing during the 1970 World Cup. Brazil have just defeated England here. Thanks to for asking me to partner on this. As a football player and fan I was deeply honoured. Pele is one of the most iconic and beautiful players and souls on this earth. Bobby Moore won the World Cup with England in 1966. Moore, in many eyes the most accomplished English defender ever, died of cancer in 1993. He regarded this photograph as his favorite in a career during which he captained his country 90 times, including the day England won the World Cup.

We are planning the first World Cup gallery EVER… this piece leading the way for 2026

This photo represents the ability of football to transcend differences including defeat. Truly iconic.
