The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka Qatar Chapter (IESL-QC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of its second Continuing Professional Development (CPD-02-2024) session of 2024 titled "Generative AI for Engineers", held on July 5th. This event saw active participation from over 160 professionals eager to delve into the transformative world of Generative AI.
The session began with a warm welcome address by Eng. Mohamed Irfan Aboobacker, who set the stage for an informative and engaging event.
Followed by our keynote presentation, delivered by the distinguished Prof. Roshan G. Ragel, focused on "Generative AI for Engineers." Prof. Ragel, a leading expert in computer engineering from the University of Peradeniya, provided a comprehensive overview of AI fundamentals, practical applications, and productivity hacks. His session covered critical topics such as:
- Basic concepts and cool examples of Generative AI
- Real-world applications and transformation of engineering projects
- Hands-on guide to using AI tools
- Productivity enhancements and
- Ethical considerations in AI
The interactive Q&A segment allowed participants to engage directly with Prof. Ragel, making the session highly dynamic and enriching. The session concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Eng. Chandimal Jayakody, appreciating the contributions of all participants and speakers.
To conclude, participants were asked to fill out a registration form, ensuring their active involvement and certification. This session was informative and invaluable and participants were provided 100% positive, enriching feedback.

The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) - Qatar Chapter successfully held its first Continuing Professional Development (CPD-01) session of 2024 on June 14th, with over 150 participants.
The event commenced with a welcome note from Eng. Mohamed Irfan Aboobacker. Followed by the keynote speaker Chartered Engineer Chandimal Jayakody presented the CPD’s topic on "Building Fire Protection System Overview." CEng. Jayakody, with 19 years of experience and multiple credentials, provided comprehensive insights into fire-protection systems, regulations, and procedures, tailored for engineers, architects, builders, and facilities management professionals.
The session covered essential topics such as fire-protection systems, design and installation considerations, local codes, testing, commissioning, and the approval process. The presentation included detailed discussions on fire protection sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire extinguishers, and the Qatar Civil Defense Department's procedures.
The interactive Q&A session further enriched the participants' learning experience. The session was well-organized, informative, interactive and priceless.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Eng. Manoj. and The recording of the session and e-certificates were distributed to the participants, reaffirming the IESL Qatar Chapter's commitment to professional development and educational excellence.

Champika is a Member of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) U.K and a corporate member of Sri Lanka Energy Managers Association (SLEMA). He was a Jt. Champika is a member of the technical committee of Solar Industries Association and an Accredited Consultant nominated by Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) to develop renewable energy projects in Solar PV. He processes over 8 years of hands on experience in EPC activities of grid-connected Rooftop Solar PV Systems. Eng. Champika serves as Director/CTO of Regen Renewables (Pvt.) Ltd which provides turnkey solutions in solar rooftop systems. He also acts as Director/CEO of Avena (Pvt.) Ltd, which provides indenting and consultancy services to power utilities (CEB & LECO).
