Smoke from wildfires in Canada strongly affects air quality in New York
Smoke from wildfires in Canada is affecting air quality in parts of the U.S. Northeast, environmental officials said, and maps and satellite images are showing the large-scale impact of the blazes.
An air quality health advisory was in effect Wednesday for much of New York, according to the state's Department of Environmental Conservation. The advisory showed air quality was "unhealthy" for the New York City metropolitan area, Eastern Lake Ontario and Central New York. It said air quality was "unhealthy for sensitive groups" in Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley, Upper Hudson Valley and Western New York.
On Wednesday afternoon, skies in the greater New York City area were growing increasingly orange. New Jersey officials upgraded the state's air quality alert to "unhealthy," while the governor strongly advised residents to stay inside. He said his team was "vigilantly" monitoring the wildfires and their impact.

A protest rally against the resumption of direct flights between Russia and Georgia was held near Georgia's parliament building in Tbilisi on Friday, May 19. The protest was organized by opposition party representatives, along with civil activists and citizens.
Protesters see the resumption of flights as a threat to the European integration path and EU candidate status.
Earlier that day the first direct flight to Georgia from Russia in four years landed in the Georgian capital.
Last week Vladimir Putin canceled visa requirements for Georgian nationals entering Russia and waived the ban on direct flights with Georgia, introduced in 2019 after anti-Russian protests in Tbilisi.

Russian Youth Army = the new Hitlerjugend?
The membership of the Russian Youth Army is growing by leaps and bounds; last year it had 300,000 members. Now it has 1.3 million members. So the war has not stopped children from becoming members, nor has it stopped parents from allowing their children to become members. And I would say that the neo-pioneers are even more troubling because what they are learning is not just something for the Scouting movement. It's explicit preparation for a kind of identity that connects young people to this history of sacrifice and martyrdom with notions of orthodox morality and spirituality. And it's explicitly meant as a path to the military for young Russians, says Ian Garner, author of the book "Z Generation: Into the Heart of Russia's Fascist Youth".

The Birth of Homo Putinus. “Z” reminds of all fascist symbolism
Many young people in Russia trust the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin, support the conflict and become actively involved in volunteer activities.
EBU filmed the International Forum of Civic Participation #WEARETOGETHER in Moscow on 9 December.
The event annually brings together caring people and leaders of social change who are involved in the development of civil society and the solution of social problems.
