Tech billionaire and CEO Tesla Elon Musk's company rejected a report by the Federal Aviation Administration highlighting dangers posed by the Starlink satellite constellation to humans on Earth, calling it "inaccurate" while urging the regulators to "improvise".

Elon Musk’s company said in a letter Tuesday that the report relied "on a deeply flawed analysis that falsely characterises reentry disposal risks associated with Starlink."

The letter read: "To be clear, SpaceX’s satellites are designed and built to fully demise during atmospheric reentry during disposal at end of life, and they do so."

The Aerospace Corporation — the non-profit group that contributed to the report — was also accused of not accounting for the analysis of SpaceX pertaining to the satellite disposal.

The report was submitted to the members of Congress on October 5 by the FAA, painting a bleak picture of the dangers posed by the constellation of Musk’s Starlink satellite.

It suggested: "By 2035 if the expected large constellation growth is realised and debris from Starlink satellites survive reentry … one person on the planet would be expected to be injured or killed every two years."

According to the report’s estimation, the probability of an aircraft suffering an accident with falling space debris could be 0.0007 per year by 2035.

SpaceX explained in its report that 325 satellites were deorbited since February 2020, and no debris has been found.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, the Aerospace Corporation said, “Our technical team is in communication with SpaceX and others to review and update the data.”

“It was approached by the FAA more than two years ago to do an independent assessment of collective risks associated with satellite re-entry, based upon the projection of all planned operators under US regulation in 2021,” it stated in a statement.

“The data included existing and planned constellations through 2035. The greatest percentage of satellites were those in Low Earth Orbit.”

Starlink risks
It was acknowledged by the FAA that Starlink satellites fully burn up in the atmosphere when they fall back to Earth at the end of service, posing no risk.

However, the Aerospace Corporation noted that "with the thousands of satellites expected to reenter, even a small amount of debris can impose a significant risk over time."

SpaceX while rejecting the report regarded the assessment based on “egregious errors, omissions and incorrect assumptions."

SpaceX also criticised the report for focusing “only on Starlink, disregarding other satellite systems like Amazon’s Project Kuiper, OneWeb, or any of the LEO systems being developed and deployed by China.”

The report noted that by 2035, Elon Musk’s satellites will account for "85% of the expected risk to people on the ground and aviation."

Northwestern Afghanistan Wednesday was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ),

The centre stated that the quake, which came in a series of jolts that shook similar parts of Afghanistan over the weekend, occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, Reuters reported.

The epicentre of the quake was located approximately 29 kilometres towards the north of the country's Herat province, the United States Geological Survey mentioned.

There were no early details on casualties caused by the latest quake, disaster management spokesman Janan Sayeeq told Reuters.

Rescue teams and volunteers have been working on the ground since Saturday to locate the quake's survivors, which shook the province earlier, demolishing entire villages and affecting 12,000 people, the United Nations (UN) estimated.

Local and national officials have given conflicting counts of the number of dead and injured from the previous earthquakes, but the disaster ministry has said 2,053 people died.

"We can't give exact numbers for dead and wounded as it is in flux," said disaster management ministry spokesman Mullah Janan Sayeq.

There were no immediate reports of new casualties after Wednesday's quake, which hit near Herat city, home to more than half a million people.

The earlier earthquakes completely destroyed at least 11 villages in Herat province's Zenda Jan district, according to the United Nations.

"Not a single house is left, not even a room where we could stay at night," said 40-year-old Mohammad Naeem, who told AFP he lost 12 relatives, including his mother, after Saturday's earthquakes.

"We can't live here anymore. You can see, our family got martyred here. How could we live here?"

Local media reported that many Herat residents had been spending their nights living in tents in the open air due to a fear of aftershocks following the weekend tremors.

Providing shelter on a large scale will be a challenge for Afghanistan's Taliban authorities, who seized power in August 2021, and have fractious relations with international aid organisations.

Afghanistan is frequently hit by deadly earthquakes, but the weekend disaster was the worst to strike the war-ravaged country in more than 25 years.

Most homes in rural Afghanistan are made of mud and built around wooden support poles, with little in the way of steel or concrete reinforcement.

Multi-generational extended families generally live under the same roof, meaning serious earthquakes can devastate communities.

Afghanistan is already suffering a dire humanitarian crisis, with the widespread withdrawal of foreign aid. Meanwhile, the Herat province, on the border with Iran, is home to around 1.9 million people, and its rural communities have been suffering from a years-long drought.

The Supreme Court Wednesday resumed the hearing of petitions challenging the SC (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023 — the law seeking to regulate discretionary powers of the country’s top judge, presided over by SC's 15-judge full bench.

All the petitioners, including the political parties, have completed their arguments, while Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan is present before the court with the hearing being broadcast live on state-run PTV News.

Except for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), all political parties have rallied support for the act, the hearing for which is being conducted by a full court at SC.

The Supreme Court Bar Association has opposed the act, while the Pakistan Bar Association has extended its support.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa is leading the full-court bench consisting of Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha A Malik, Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Shahid Waheed and Justice Musarrat Hilali is hearing the case.

Hearing
Before the attorney general began his arguments, the chief justice jokingly said: "You are last but not the least."

Responding to the CJP, Awan said: "I have given arguments for the case to be heard."

The AGP said he will respond to the three questions raised during the course of the hearing.

“I will talk about Article 191 and the independence of the judiciary,” he said.

The AGP said he will argue about the Parliament being the master of the roster, the right to appeal and the question of appeal against the decision of a full court.

“The fundamental rights enshrined in Articles 14, 20, 22 and 28 are exercised in accordance with the law,” Awan said, addressing judges of the apex court.

He added that the right to privacy is regulated by law and also spoke about Article 191 empowering Parliament to legislate.

“Are you saying that the word law in Article 191 is different from the use of this word in other constitutional provisions?” the chief justice asked the AGP.

The law
The law gave the power of taking sou motu notice to a three-member committee comprising senior judges including the chief justice. It further aimed to have transparent proceedings in the apex court and includes the right to appeal.

Regarding the constitution of benches, the Act stated that every cause, matter or appeal before the apex court would be heard and disposed of by a bench constituted by a committee comprising the CJP and the two senior-most judges.

It added that the decisions of the committee would be taken by a majority.

Regarding exercising the apex court's original jurisdiction, the Act said that any matter invoking the use of Article 184(3) would first be placed before the committee.

On matters where the interpretation of the Constitution is required, the Act said the committee would compose a bench comprising no less than five apex court judges.

About appeals for any verdict by an apex court bench that exercised Article 184(3)‘s jurisdiction, the Act said that the appeal would lie within 30 days of the bench’s order to a larger SC bench. It added that the appeal would be fixed for hearing within a period not exceeding 14 days.

It added that this right of appeal would also extend retrospectively to those aggrieved persons against whom an order was made under Article 184(3) prior to the commencement of the SC (Practice and Procedure), Act 2023, on the condition that the appeal was filed within 30 days of the Act's commencement.

The Act additionally said that a party would have the right to appoint its counsel of choice for filing a review application under Article 188 of the Constitution.

Furthermore, it states that an application pleading urgency or seeking interim relief, filed in a cause, appeal or matter, shall be fixed for hearing within 14 days from the date of its filing.

PMLN leader Nawaz Sharif has green signaled his legal team to file for a security bail in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) before his return to Pakistan.

Nawaz Sharif is preparing to return home on October 21, and this move involves legal proceedings.

These security bonds pertain to cases related to Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, and the filing of bail plea is expected to take place in the coming week.

Applications will be submitted to request the court to grant these security bail.

It’s worth noting that Nawaz Sharif had been sentenced to ten-year prison in the Avenfield reference case and seven years in the Al-Azizia reference case.

Back in June 2021, the Islamabad High Court had dismissed Nawaz Sharif’s appeals due to his non-appearance, even declaring him an absconder.

However, upon his return home, he will have the opportunity to file a petition for the restoration of these appeals.

Previously, the Lahore High Court had ordered the removal of Nawaz Sharif’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL) after suspending his sentences.

This move allowed him conditional permission to go abroad for medical treatment for four weeks, after which he did not show up back in the country.

In the intense eighth match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, the Pakistani bowlers faced a daunting challenge against the formidable Sri Lankan batting lineup, ultimately conceding a staggering 344 runs. Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama exhibited exceptional prowess, propelling Sri Lanka to this imposing total. This performance marked a significant milestone, making Sri Lanka the first team to score the highest runs against Pakistan in a World Cup innings, surpassing India’s 336 runs in the 2019 World Cup.

Despite an early wicket loss, the Sri Lankan batsmen displayed resilience. Opener Pathum Nissanka showcased a formidable half-century, laying a strong foundation. However, it was Mendis and Samarawickrama who truly stole the show, elevating Sri Lanka’s innings to another level with their exceptional batting display. Mendis particularly posed a significant challenge for the struggling Pakistani bowling, accumulating an impressive 122 runs off just 77 deliveries, including a barrage of boundaries.

In response, Hasan Ali emerged as a standout performer for Pakistan with the ball, despite being the costliest bowler, claiming four crucial wickets. However, the enormity of the target looms large for Pakistan, as they face the challenge of chasing down a target greater than 265 runs in their World Cup history, setting the stage for a thrilling contest in their pursuit of victory.

10/10/2023

The European Union (EU) backtracked in disarray on Monday on an announcement that aid to Palestinians had been suspended in response to the attack on Israel by Hamas after EU countries complained the bloc’s executive had overstepped the mark.

The confusion began after Oliver Varhelyi, the top official for relations with the EU’s neighbours, said the European Commission was putting all its development aid for Palestinians, worth 691 million euros ($729 million), under review.

In a post on social media site X, Varhelyi – a Hungarian who is European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement – also said all payments were “immediately suspended”.

Varhelyi was nominated for his post by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a staunch ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The announcement prompted consternation among multiple governments, who had warned against cutting off aid to the detriment of Palestinian civilians and questioned whether the Commission had the authority to take such a decision.

The move also came as a surprise as officials had said earlier in the day that aid to Palestinians would be discussed at an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers on Tuesday.

Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg and Ireland publicly voiced alarm while other countries did so behind the scenes, diplomats said.

“Our understanding is that there is no legal basis for a unilateral decision of this kind by an individual Commissioner and we do not support a suspension of aid,” a spokesperson for Ireland’s foreign ministry said.

More than five hours after Varhelyi’s social media post, the Commission issued a statement confirming it had started an urgent aid review but also declaring that “as there were no payments foreseen, there will be no suspension of payments”.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell then sowed further confusion when he said the EU would not suspend “due payments” – right after the Commission had said no payments were foreseen.

The Commission declined to explain the discrepancy. But it clarified that humanitarian aid – which is separate to funds for development – would continue.

It said it was carrying out the review to “ensure that no EU funding indirectly enables any terrorist organization to carry out attacks against Israel”.

Hamas militants killed some 900 Israelis and abducted dozens in the deadliest such incursion since the Yom Kippur war 50 years ago, prompting Israel to retaliate with its heaviest ever bombardment of Gaza, which has killed more than 680 people.

Iraq’s populist Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr has condemned Arab leaders for their continued failure to adequately support the Palestinian people, calling it a source of “shame and disgrace”.

In a press conference, he added that “we are prepared to deliver food and water to Gaza through Egypt, Syria or elsewhere” and called on the Arab states to ensure the supply of power and water.

He also called out “a policy of double standards”.

“All countries hurried to support Ukraine. Why not do the same for Gaza?”

Moreover, al-Sadr singled out the Arab states which had normalised relations with Israel, saying it “will be of no benefit”.

10/10/2023

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has reiterated that party president Shehbaz Sharif and chief organiser Maryam Nawaz were not his leaders, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Speaking to a private news channel, the former prime minister warned that if Maryam Nawaz handles the party’s affairs, it may lead to the separation of individuals like himself.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reaffirmed that his leader is Nawaz Sharif, not Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

In reply to a question, the PML-N leader said that he was not inclined towards participating in welcoming Nawaz Sharif, adding that he was not informed about the latter’s reception.

Responding to a question regarding Nawaz Sharif’s bail, Abbasi said that a person who was a ‘convicted absconder’ cannot get bail. “First, he has to surrender before the court, otherwise the complication will increase,” he added.

Moreover, the former premier said that he was not inclined towards participating in elections amid the current circumstances. He firmly expressed his decision not to participate in the upcoming elections.

This wasn’t the first time Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has given a statement against Maryam Nawaz.

Earlier in February, Abbasi made it clear that his leader is Nawaz Sharif and if Maryam Nawaz elevated to the PML-N’s top office, he will consider remaining in the party’s fold or not.

“I was named the senior vice president of the PML-N when Shehbaz Sharif was arrested in year 2019,” Shahid Khaqan said. “When Maryam was given the leadership position and elevated to the Chief Organizer’s position, I had tendered my resignation at that time from the party office to the PML-N president,” he said. “I could not work further on the party’s office, I told.”

“I have long-time relations and friendship with Nawaz Sharif, he is my leader, and this relation could not be bonded with Maryam,” Shahid Khaqan said.

Shehbaz Sharif, who is president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), appointed Maryam Nawaz as senior vice-president of the party.

A notification shared by Federal Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that Maryam Nawaz has been authorized to re-organize the party at all functional tiers/levels as the “Chief Organizer”.

“Pursuant to the powers conferred under the Constitution of Pakistan Muslim League -N, the undersigned is pleased to appoint Ms. Maryam Nawaz Sharif as Senior Vice President” with immediate effect,” the notification reads.

Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari said it’s clear that Iran is “willing to provide” Palestine with help following a speech by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

Reporting from Tehran, Jabbari added: “It depends on what they will ask for. So far as we know, this will be in terms of humanitarian aid.

“Iran has denied providing financial or military support to the resistance movements in Palestine, but the supreme leader did make a point to say it is the duty of all Muslim nations to assist the Palestinians in whatever shape or form they require assistance for the time being.”

10/10/2023

All-Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA) Tuesday released the bullion rates after around a month's break, with the price of the precious commodity falling by more than Rs15,000 per tola.

According to data released by the APSGJA, the price of gold (24 carats) decreased by Rs15,500 per tola and Rs13,546 per 10 grams to settle at Rs199,500 and Rs171,039, respectively.

The last time that bullion rates were issued was September 12, when the price of the yellow metal stood at Rs215,000 per tola.

But due to uncertain economic conditions, speculations were on the rise. The government then stepped in and launched a crackdown against the speculators, resulting in the suspension of the bullion rates.

As no uniform rates were being issued during these 28 days, gold traders have been quoting prices of the yellow metal at whim.

Meanwhile, the price of the yellow metal saw a major decrease as it went down by $55 to settle at $1,891 per ounce in the international market.

Data shared by the association showed the price of silver decreased by Rs50 per tola and Rs42.87 per 10 grams to settle at Rs2,500 and Rs2.143.34, respectively.

The uncertain state of the gold market — when the rates were not being released — had revealed fractures within the jeweller community, with reports of internal division and grouping coming to the fore.
