The Director General Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), Zakir Hussain visited Darkut valley on 16th November 2024 to inspect the GLOF-II projects, specifically the construction of flood protection walls in Darkut Valley. Tehsildar Yasin, AD Disaster Management, Ghizer ,Project Engineers, and the Contractor, briefed the Director General about the progress of the projects. Eight flood protection walls,EWS, CBDRMC Darkut which are currently under construction, the field staff also briefed about four already completed protective walls GLOF II is making a total investment worth 30 million PKR aimed at protecting the vulnerable community from the GLOF phenomenon in Darkut valley.
The contractor and site engineer briefed about the project status and assured that the project will be completed by November 25, 2024.
Moreover, early warning system instruments were installed in three areas of Darkut and Umalset, village in collaboration with the Pakistan Meteorological Department, to provide timely warnings to people living in valleys under the glacier.
As part of the Community Support Initiative (CSI), DG GBDMA distributed support to vulnerable members of the community. Cash assistance worth PKR 50000 (fifty thousand only)was distributed from CSR( Corporate Social Responsibility) with the collaboration of KCBL among people identified by Lumberdar Darkut . and verified by Tehsildar Yasin .It is worth mentioning that CSR is being distributed to the community in sectors of health, education and sports especially in the valleys identified by the GLOF II to create awareness about climate action.
The local community expressed gratitude to the DG GBDMA and his team for taking steps for timely ex*****on of the GLOF-II Project for constructing flood protection walls ,CBDRMCS,and EWs in flood-affected areas .Later on DG GBDMA also visited under construction CBDRMC at Sosot village in Sub Division Gupis and instructed the site engineer to expedite work and ensure quality of work.FIP
