Coined by geographers and theorists in mid 1990s, the term 'knowledge economy' captures the shift from resource-based and industrial economies to those where intellectual capital and technology are paramount. For a country like Pakistan, transitioning to a knowledge economy presents both challenges and opportunities, given its socio-economic landscape and developmental aspirations.

The third-time postponement of the verdict in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case has stirred a debate and a conspiracy theory, alike. Former PM Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi have been under the legal scanner for long, and the trajectory of the proceedings hint at some skeletons in the cupboard. While this case is the last in the list of litigations against the former PM, and its decision sits on the eve of talks underway between the government and the PTI, there is a feeling of a quid pro quo in the works.

China and Pakistan have lived through thick and thin, and their vision for a progressive tomorrow is worth-emulating. Moreover, their strategic unanimity is an asset and it is, perhaps, the only bilateralism that is not impacted with crosscurrents and upheavals around them. That sentiment was once again reaffirmed by the two sides at the 5th meeting of the CPEC Joint Working Group in Beijing, which went on to reiterate the resolve to get going and to concentrate on industrialisation and building of Special Economic Zones in the second leg of their multi-billion dollar geo-economic venture.

Two big events, triggered by two different militant groups within a space of 24 hours, convey an extremely disturbing and scary security situation.

On January 8, a band of at least 80 militants stormed the Zehri bazaar (Khuzdar) without facing any resistance from the Levies force stationed in the area. The militants ransacked government buildings, robbed a private bank and took local Levies personnel hostage. Other targets of arson included the Levies station, municipal committee offices and Nadra office.

In Pakistan's public offices, harassment by bosses is an all-too-common reality. Far from being isolated incidents, these acts of intimidation and abuse are systemic, thriving in an environment that rewards power and protects the powerful. This culture of unchecked authority and impunity has created workplaces where fear and silence are the norm, and subordinates - both male and female - suffer without recourse.

Despite significant strides in the right direction since the start of the 21st century, only about half the population of Pakistan has access to universal healthcare, which is generally accepted as being a necessity for development. In fact, the only developed country without a true universal healthcare system is the US, which is one of the reasons why the country lags far behind other rich countries in terms of health outcomes and cost. But unlike the US, where the influence of the insurance industry and Big Pharma are generally blamed for the lack of universal healthcare, in Pakistan, cost is the main factor - population growth is outpacing the economic growth needed to finance the existing healthcare system, let alone an expanded universal healthcare system.

The trajectory of terrorist violence in Pakistan since the establishment of the Islamic Emirate Afghanistan in August 2021 is clear. So is the toll it has taken on the civilians and the security forces. The country witnessed a 38 per cent spike in TTP-mounted violence in 2022, followed by a rise of 118 per cent in 2023. The year 2024 saw a huge 192 per cent increase in the terrorists acts.

In the shadows of a seemingly endless conflict, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming proportions. Recent statistics released by the Palestinian government reveal a staggering 6 per cent decline in the enclave's population since the onset of war with Israel nearly 15 months ago. This drop - reflecting the loss of approximately 100,000 individuals and the presumption of over 55,000 deaths - is not just a number; it signifies lives torn apart, families shattered and a community struggling to survive amid unimaginable hardship.

On the 29th of December 2007, Benazir Bhutto, an outstanding leader, politician and stateswomen who served as the 11th prime minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996, was assassinated. She had the honour and distinction of being the first women elected to head a democratic government in a Muslim-majority country.

The rift over the assent for the madrassa bill has come to a pass. The President of the Republic has finally signed it into a law after a hiatus, which apparently was aimed at arm-twisting an ally of the coalition government. The JUIF, which was part of the controversial 26th amendment to the Constitution, had grabbed the religious schools registration law as a concession for throwing its weight behind the legislation package. With the Societies Registration Act 2024 becoming a statute, all the JUIF-led seminaries will be registered by, and accountable to, the Ministry of Industries, as per the party's wish. This makes it mandatory for the seminaries to file an annual report detailing their education curriculum and finances.

In an age of unprecedented technological advancement and digital interconnectedness, the stark disparity in women's participation in tech and digital spaces in Pakistan should be a grave concern. A recent report by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) describes women's engagement in the digital economy as "alarmingly low", which is unacceptable for a country that needs to make quick progress to grow its economy. The digital economy will be one of the primary drivers of future growth, and exclusion of half the population, whether willful or inadvertent, will have disastrous consequences. Limited participation of women in digital spaces also limits progress, innovation and the potential for balanced growth within our communities.

December 25th is a day of resoluteness in our national milieu. On this day, a great selfless man through his diligent struggle bestowed the Muslims of the Indian Subcontinent with an independent homeland by freeing them from the tutelage of colonialism. He fought on the principles of rule of law and never deviated from it even in adversity. His constitutional battle, as he was a lawyer par excellence, was unparalleled in a society that was divisive and jaundiced on the lines of communalism.

The year was 1985. It was the height of the Cold War. Pakistan was a frontline state in the US-led campaign to defeat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. But the same year Senator Larry Pressler introduced a bill in the Congress that sought to regulate aid to Pakistan. The bill was approved by Congress and later known as the Pressler Amendment. The main aim of the legislation was to ensure Pakistan did not build a nuclear bomb. Under the amendment, the US President had to annually certify to the Congress that Pakistan was not developing a nuclear programme. For 5 years, the US President continued to issue certification to the Congress. But when Soviet troops were defeated and left Afghanistan in 1989, the US also withdrew from the region.

Fire safety in Karachi is an afterthought. During the current year, almost 3,000 fire incidents were reported in the metropolis. At a recent conference, city planners, engineers and architects raised concerns about the effectiveness of regulatory bodies - like the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) in Karachi - and questioned their failure to enforce building by-laws by approving illegal construction of multi-storey residential, commercial and industrial buildings without fire safety plans. The majority of the buildings in the city lack adequate fire safety systems. The issue of fire safety has long been ignored in Karachi, with the rapid urbanisation and population growth of the city outpacing the necessary infrastructure development. Many of Karachi's high-rise buildings, commercial spaces and residential complexes are built without considering essential fire prevention and safety systems.
