In the latest beta version of Android application, the messaging giant WhatsApp has removed the ‘online’ status indicator for all accounts present on the business app, WABetaInfo reported.

It means users won’t be able to see whether a certain business contact is online or not. The ‘last seen’ option is also no longer available for the business accounts, on the beta version of the app.

Earlier believed to be some kind of a bug, was later confirmed to be an update by WABetaInfo.

The online portal reported, “When you’re chatting with a business account from WhatsApp beta for Android 2.21.13.17, you will just see “Business account” instead of “online” or “last seen today at…”.

It is not yet confirmed, whether WhatsApp will bring this update in the non-beta version of the application or not. The company will surely receive feedback about the new update from the users and probably will decide whether to keep it or not.

The messaging app had earlier introduced waveform voice messages feature as well in the beta version for Android. However, it was later removed after WhatsApp received feedback from users about the new feature.

The new update had replaced the typical line in the voice message bubble with a waveform. The users complained that the waves make it difficult to navigate the bar of the voice message.

Moreover, the users also complained that the color of the voice waveform wasn’t visible in dark mode.

Ch Fawad criticized the Past Govt for not paying any attention to state media, or to the positive image of Pakistan.

Fawad stated that recently an info-lab was caught, through which it was detected that 845 fake websites were running against Pakistan while broadcasting incorrect news on delicate subjects like Baluchistan, Kashmir, etc.

He said that more than 300,000 tweets were pooled from India’s city Ahmadabad.

The minister stated that all this has occurred due to feeble media strategies of the past governments as they did nothing for image building of Pakistan as well as concerning the media strategies of opponents against Pakistan.

The past governments had been busy in political actions in the state media organizations encumbering the national exchequer.

He requested the leadership of PPP to pass the Journalists Protection Act pending in the standing committee on Human Rights.

Fawad said that the fake news is mainly generated from three to four different places from India which is then forwarded to Afghanistan to boost and then it reaches Pakistan to meet further targets for trivial advantages.

“However there should be unanimity on both sides about all such concerning issues so that we can jointly face the “nexus of evil” against our motherland.” Said Fawad Ch.

In a bid to ensure the safety of the passengers amid stormy weather, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane used Indian airspace after taking clearance from the concerned authorities of the neighboring country, ARY News reported.

According to the details, PIA’s Lahore-bound flight PK-306 departed from Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on Friday. While the aircraft had covered about half the distance, the pilots requested a change in course as the weather turned rough suddenly.

Tim Berners-Lee's source code for the World Wide Web is the latest non-fungible token (NFT) to go up for sale.

Sotheby's in New York is selling the program that paved the way for the internet we know today more than 30 years after its creation.

The sale started June 23 and ends on Wednesday. Bidding had reached $2.8 million on Friday.

The lot includes an animated version of Berners-Lee's nearly 10,000 lines of code and a letter from the British-born computer scientist himself.

"Ten years ago, we wouldn't have been able to do this," said Cassandra Hatton, vice-president at Sotheby's, referring to the recent boom in NFTs.

Hatton said this work is unique because of its importance for the creation of the World Wide Web.

"That changed every aspect of your life," Hatton said. "We don't even fully comprehend the impact that it has on our lives, and the impact that we will continue to have on our lives."

An NFT is a digital object such as a drawing, animation, piece of music, photo or video with a certificate of authenticity created by blockchain technology that underlies cryptocurrency. It cannot be forged or otherwise manipulated.

NFTs currently generate several hundred million dollars in transactions every month.

NFT exchanges take place in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin on specialist sites but traditional auction houses are seeking to capitalize on the phenomenon.

The most expensive NFT ever was sold by Christie's in March for $69.3 million.

Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger has predicted that the ongoing chip shortage will hit bottom in the second half of this year before the situation begins to eventually improve, reported Bloomberg.

With the pandemic moving people and their work online, the demand for modern electronics has also risen across the globe. This shift to digital system has placed a lot of pressure on the semiconductor industry, which has found it difficult to cope up with growing demand.

Gelsinger explained in an interview that he does not expect the chip industry to bounce back to its healthy supply-demand situation until 2022. “For a variety of industries, I think it’s still getting worse before it gets better," he was quoted as saying.

Being the largest chipmaker in the world, Intel has a central role to play in ensuring smooth operations across various data centers and corporate networks across the globe. While the company is in a better place as compared to others in meeting this increase in demand, it is important to note that the supply of other computer parts has also fallen short, further exacerbating this issue.

Gelsinger also claims that the current growth in the demand for chips is not a short-term occurrence and other supply crunches might continue to impact the industry in the future.

The order was issued on a petition filed by a citizen aggrieved by the "immorality and obscenity" spread by content on the mobile app.

The PTA has been directed to suspend the app until the next hearing of the case, which is scheduled for July 8.

The court in its order stated that TikTok had not abided by "the constant undertakings and assurances" given by it before various courts and the PTA to block accounts spreading vulgarity.

The platform also failed to respect the law and basic injunctions of Islam as well as the culture of Pakistan and "recently started a social media campaign whereby they are celebrating 'LGBT (Le***an, gay, bisexual and transgender) Pride Month'", the order added.

Being aggrieved by the "immorality and obscenity" being spread by TikTok in Pakistan, the plaintiff earlier this month filed a complaint before PTA seeking an immediate ban on the application, but the PTA "malafidely and being hand-in-glove with [TikTok] did not pay any heed" to the complaint, according to the order.

In October last year, the PTA had banned TikTok for the first time over complaints regarding indecent and immoral content.

The ban was lifted 10 days later, "after assurance from management that they will block all accounts repeatedly involved in spreading obscenity and immorality".

"TikTok will moderate the account[s] in accordance with local laws," the authority had tweeted at the time.

In March, the PTA had directed internet service providers to immediately block access to TikTok in accordance with the orders of the Peshawar High Court.

The PHC had imposed a temporary ban on the platform's functioning in the country on a petition filed by several citizens stating that the content shared on the application were in violation of Pakistan’s Constitution, guaranteeing social and moral well-being of citizens.

However, the ban was lifted by the PHC a few weeks later, with a direction to the PTA to take steps to ensure that "immoral content" was not uploaded to the platform.

The Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR) in collaboration with the Pakistan Citizens Portal launched a “Zainab Alert App” nationwide to combat the child abuse issue on a war footing and to address this grave problem, an official of the MoHR has said.

Talking to APP here, he said that the Zainab alert app was launched on Citizen’s portal and relevant regional and district levels for combating emergency and recovery of missing or abducted children.

The basic purpose of this App is to initiate a quick response as soon as a complaint is lodged. It has connected the DPOs to the system and the complaint directly reaches to the concerned DPO.

The App keeps a track of the missing child case and all the process taking place from preliminary examination to verification, registration of FIR and investigation. However, a Mobile App with same purpose and nature was already launched and working on Sindh level inside the CPLC office, he added.

He said, “We always see duplication of services and notice that same nature of activities are undertaken at different places by different people”. It not only consumes time but also the efforts, he added.

The need of the day is to combine all these efforts under one roof so that duplication can be avoided and maximum relief can be granted/provided to the citizens.

The government’s proposal to increase taxes on mobile phone calls will hit prepaid customers, especially those from the lower-income group, the hardest.

According to the detail, the finance minister had announced the imposition of additional federal excise duty (FED) at the rate of 0.75 per 5 minutes on mobile phone calls.

The industry protested the proposed tax hike by the government because if the FED was implemented, the five-minute calls, which are now Rs 97 paise, would be Rs 2 72 paise.

Jazz CEO Amir Ibrahim expressed frustration over the imposition of 40% duty on users who do not have WhatsApp or smartphones to make calls.

“I urge the government to abolish this ‘anti-poor tax,” he said.

Telecom experts point out that additional FEDs on mobile calls are likely to affect those from the lowest income groups, such as labourers, guards, janitors, drivers and daily wage earners. I am away from my family.

Consumer rights volunteer Pervez Iftikhar believes that the low-income group has to make long calls on a daily basis to stay in touch with their families in remote areas.

He said that these long calls are made on a daily basis which is important for maintaining the social fabric of the family and the second group of long callers is mostly housewives who stay in touch with their relatives and friends Make calls for

“For people who have a lot of extra time, it’s important for their natural and overall mental health,” he added.

According to PTA figures, there are 183 million mobile subscribers in the country, of which 98 million use broadband/internet and 85 million make basic voice calls only.

A senior executive at one of Pakistan’s four telecom companies said the availability of smartphones for the low-income group was the biggest obstacle to internet access.

He further clarified that mobile broadband is not available in many remote areas of Pakistan.

Note that the government’s decision to impose an additional federal excise duty on call duration above five minutes would become 38 per cent costlier for the mobile phone users that would further go up after every five minutes, industry sources said on Saturday.

At present, the tax on a mobile phone call is Rs1.97 inclusive of the federal excise duty at 19.5 per cent; however, after the proposed addition of an additional duty of 75 paisas, the cost would be Rs2.72, according to a calculation of a leading cellular phone company.

The government through the Finance Bill 2021 had proposed additional federal excise duty on mobile phone calls above three minutes.

Besides, an additional FED on mobile phone calls, the government had also proposed an additional FED on the Internet services. These proposals attracted severe criticism from the general public, politicians and other stakeholders.

The government functionaries; however, announced that the increase of tax on IT and IT services was withdrawn at the Cabinet meeting and the announcement in the budget speech was an error.

On Friday, summarising the budget proposals in the Senate, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin had said that the government had proposed to impose an additional FED on the phone calls above five minutes.

Pakistani mountain climber Ali Sadpara may be gone but he is certainly not forgotten.

American mountaineer Collin O' Brady recently scaled Mt Everest and after doing so, paid tribute to the Pakistani icon.

In a picture that is doing the rounds on social media, Brady can be seen in the picture, smiling as he holds up flags of a few countries.

He can also be seen waving Pakistan's flag, a tribute to the iconic Sadpara.

"American adventurer Collin O’ Brady pays tribute to his fellow adventurers who passed away on K2 this year. At the peak of Mount Everest, he raised flags for his friends who did not survive climbing the deadly K2. Among his friends was Muhammad from Pakistan," tweeted the US Embassy Islamabad.

Sadpara declared dead by family

Sadpara, Iceland's John Snorri and Chile's Juan Pablo Mohr had departed for their journey to scale the K2 mountain on February 3 after Sadpara's birthday, asking fans and admirers to "keep us in your prayers".

They had started their attempt for the final summit in the early hours of February 5 , hoping to accomplish the herculean feat by afternoon.

Despite a thorough search by the Pakistan Army for the mounaineer and his companions, the expedition was not found and hence, Sadparas family declared him dead.

British former finance minister Sajid Javid will replace Matt Hancock as the country's health minister, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's office said on Saturday.

Hancock quit after he was caught breaking Covid-19 rules by kissing and embracing an aide in his office, enraging colleagues and the public who have been living under lockdown.

Hancock, 42, wrote to PM Johnson to resign after The Sun newspaper published photos on Friday of the married minister embracing a woman who he had appointed to a taxpayer-funded role to scrutinise the performance of his department.

"We owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down as I have done by breaching the guidance," Hancock said in his letter.

Hancock's replacement Javid has already held two of the top jobs in government, serving as finance minister from 2019 to 2020 and interior minister in 2018.

The prime minister in a message from his Twitter handle said: “I want all Pakistanis, [especially] our youth to gear up for the biggest tree planting campaign in our history.”

He went on to say that they have a lot of catching up to do.

The prime minister also shared an image highlighting how Pakistan is far behind in tree plantation as it depicted that globally there are 422 trees for every person while Pakistan only has five trees per person.

Further, he said that they will be gearing up this monsoon season for the plantation drive – the biggest in Pakistan’s history.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan hosted World Environment Day this year in recognition of the prime minister’s initiative of the Billion Tree Tsunami project.

Addressing the ceremony which was held in collaboration with UNEP and also addressed by UK PM Boris Johnson, Prime Minister Imran Khan termed it an honour for Pakistan to host the day saying that it was during their KP government tenure when they decided to plant one billion saplings.

He said that previously only 640 million trees were planted in the country while the PTI-led KP government alone during its five-year tenure planted one billion saplings.

The prime minister said that nature has once again given them the opportunity to utilize these 10 years to improve their ecosystem as any threat to it will have an irreversible negative impact on the country.

“We are already witnessing the impact of global warming on our glaciers, which is a source of 80 per cent of our water supply,” he said adding that their meltdown has led to water shortages, with provinces blaming each other for water theft.
