Chief selector Wahab Riaz on monday announced an 18-member Pakistan Test squad for the tour to Australia comprising three matches scheduled from 14 December 2023 to 7 January 2024.
Left-handed opening batter Saim Ayub has earned his maiden call-up to the Test team after an impressive run in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24. The 22-year-old scored 553 runs in four matches for Karachi Whites and had three centuries to his name, including a match-winning double century against Faisalabad in the final of the tournament.
Right-arm fast bowler Khurram Shahzad has also been awarded his maiden Test call-up, on the back of a successful domestic season thus far. The 23-year-old was the highest wicket-taker of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24 with 36 wickets in eight matches at an average of 20.31 and picked up 13 wickets at 16.62 in the recently concluded Pakistan Cup.
Shortly after Babar Azam announced on Wednesday that he was stepping down as the Pakistan cricket captain in all formats, the Pakistan Cricket Board said Shan Masood was appointed Test captain while Shaheen Shah Afridi would lead the T20 side.
The cricket board also said it changed the portfolio of the entire coaching staff, including team director Mickey Arthur. It added that all coaches will continue to work in the National Cricket Academy while the board will announce the new coaching staff in due course for the upcoming series in Australia and New Zealand.

Having spent most of his career with his home county Middlesex, Finn made the move to Sussex in 2022 and made 19 appearances that season, taking 21 wickets.
Unfortunately, he suffered a knee injury that has kept him out of the game in 2023 and has now decided that it is time to call it a day on a magnificent 18-year career.
“Today I am retiring from all forms of cricket with immediate effect. I have been fighting a battle with my body for the last 12 months and have admitted defeat to it," Finn said in a statement.
The 34-year-old right-armer took 125 wickets at an average of 30.40 in 36 Test appearances between 2010 and 2016.
Finn also played 69 ODIs and 21 T20 internationals for England.

Former human rights minister Shireen Mazari was allegedly beaten up and arrested from her home on Saturday. The reports of her detention were confirmed by her daughter, lawyer Iman Mazari. Mazari's daughter tweeted about her mother's arrest saying, "Male police officers have beaten and taken my mother away. All I have been told is that Anti-Corruption Wing Lahore has taken her. Islamabad police disagreed with the version of Mazari's daughter, saying: "Dr Shireen Mazari was arrested by female police officers as per the law at the request of the anti-corruption department. News of any mishandling is baseless." In the footage of her arrest, Mazari can be seen being dragged out of a car by female police personnel while she could be heard protesting: "No. Don't touch me." Unidentified voices in the footage could be heard telling her that "there is no issue" and the matter could be discussed "peacefully". "You are using violence. Don't you take my phone ... you b*****d," Mazari could be heard saying in response.
