The world's biggest EV-battery maker CATL (a Chinese company) unveiled a new battery technology that it claims can deliver more than 997 km (620 miles) of driving range. That is an impressive 50% more than the Tesla’s Model S.

The Qilin battery can pack large amounts of energy into a compact package thanks to advancements in both battery chemistry and packaging. The battery has an energy density of 255 watt-hours per kilogram, according to CATL and goes into production as soon as 2023.

What’s even more amazing is that this high capacity battery is suppose to be capable of fast charging up to 80% (from 10%) in only 10 minutes according to the manufacturer. Advancements like this can really propel the global electric car industry adding more acceptance to the technology given its convenience, economy and environmental benefits.

This Sunday people woke up to closed shops and bakeries in Lahore. Many can’t even find basic groceries such as milk and eggs for breakfast. The Punjab government has imposed a lockdown in Lahore amid the energy crisis as an attempt to curtail the shortfall, though one may ponder why basic fundamentals such as groceries are not exempt to this. Only pharmacies seem to be allowed to remain open. Many businesses are not even able to make grocery deliveries as their shops and warehouses have also been ordered to remain closed.

Bitcoin’s energy consumption has dropped by more than a third after the crypto currency’s value took a nosedive in June, forcing the blockchain’s massive electricity use to similarly dip according to estimates of annualized electricity use by digital currency economist Alex de Vries on his website digiconomist.net.

Bitcoin mining is generally considered energy hunger, which is alarming to environmentalists. Bitcoin miners earn new tokens by validating transactions through a fundamentally inefficient energy process. The amount of energy globally used for the process rivals that of entire nations.

PM Shehbaz Sharif announced the ‘Super Tax’ on Friday and said it was a tough economic decision taken at a time when the country was near default. The sectors which will be subject to the tax include steel, sugar, cement, oil, gas, fertilisers, LNG terminals, banking, textile, automobile, ci******es, chemicals and beverages.

The premier also announced the imposition of another tax on citizens who earn an annual income of Rs. 150 million or higher.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre, 53 people in Karachi tested positive for the virus on June 16,. This number more than doubled within a week as 138 people tested positive in the city on June 22.

Karachi has reported the highest number of Covid cases from across the country, while the second-highest cases were recorded in Abbottabad with a positivity rate of 8.7pc. Overall in the country 268 new Covid cases have been detected.

Chairing the ‘Dilkash Muree’ project’s meeting, HSS ordered regulation on rent rates for hotels in Muree this peak season. This is meant to help tourists and visitors, protecting them from exorbitant rental rates which are often seen by hotels during the season.

He also ordered the implementation of the ‘Dilkash Muree’ project to commence as soon as possible.

Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) saw an upwards trend on Tuesday with the KSE-100 index gaining 700 points crossing 42,000 points - an upward trend towards stability. This is a change for the better after a previous market slump.

The federal government has increased advance tax on fiber optic to 15% and custom duties on telecom industry equipment to 20%. Telecommunication officials have informed senators during a session of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance that people can expect ‘phone call load shedding’ in coming days.

Phone call load shedding means outages in cellular services for certain time periods in the day, just like electricity outages. This is to manage loads within a given infrastructure. If this does happen, it can disrupt communication for everyone and prove to be a hinderance in daily business and personal activities. The implications on emergency communication can also be imagined. But will this actually happen or not, that is yet to be seen.

After a plenary session held in Berlin, Germany between 14-17 June 2022, a statement has been issued that Pakistan has met all 34 items in its action list and now an onsite visit is to be conducted. An onsite visit is usually looked at as a procedural requirement and is understood to be a final step before a country is put off increased monitoring, externally known as the ‘grey list’.

The question is how will this affect Pakistani oil prices which are also subject to the climbing dollar exchange rate and current IMF requirements.

The new Apple MacBook Air has been announced and pre-orders are said to have started. What is so exciting about this laptop is that they have made such a slim notebook a mega-powerhouse through it’s extremely capable and super-efficient M2 chip.

The M1 chip revolutionized computing power to energy efficiency in processors back in 2020 when it was launched and completely disrupted the industry by setting a new bench mark standard for all others. Now the M2 has further improved the M1’s performance by over 20% in CPU performance and almost 35% in GPU performance.

Also, you get more than an all day battery life (with 18 hours of video playback), a slightly larger screen size through narrowing bezels and a renewed straight shape with new colors. Also the MacBook Air M2 features better speakers, a 1080 we**am and more 100nits brighter screen than its predecessor.

Sadly, with the dollar rate flying high the price is one of it’s main weaknesses in Pakistan. Having said that, if it you have the budget and need something this capable and well designed, look no further.

According to Influence Map, a research NGO that evaluates corporate climate goals and policies, more than half of all new vehicles coming off of production lines in 2029 worldwide would need to be electric for the sector to be compliant with the goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels.

Out of the 12 top automakers globally, only two plan to make enough electric vehicles by 2030 to stay in step with Paris Agreement climate goals! One is Mercedes-Benz, projecting a transition in keeping with that target with 56 percent and the other is Tesla which exclusively makes electric cars.

Ford, Stellantis, Volkswagen and BMW come closer to the 52 percent threshold for compatibility with Paris temperature target, with 36 to 46 percent of their fleets planned to be electric in 2029. Japanese auto giants Toyota, Honda and Nissan are especially far off the mark, with non-polluting cars accounting for only 14, 18 and 22 percent, respectively, of their planned production in 2029 according to Influence Map.

US manufacturer Ford, France´s Renault and South Korea´s Hyundai, with 28, 31 and 27 percent of their global fleets projected to be electric in seven years were only slightly more on track.
Collectively, the combined global production of battery electric vehicles by all automakers is forecast to only reach 32 percent by 2029 which means the auto industry would need to boost production of zero-emission cars by 80 percent in order to hit the IEA 2030 production target.

FBR has revised income tax rates for seven slabs and shared them with the IMF. They are proposing keeping the lower slabs unchanged and increasing it for incomes slabs above Rs2,400,000. The IMF has recommended increasing income tax for Rs1,200,000 to Rs2,400,000 to 10%, but the FBR has suggested to keep it at 7%. Above these incomes, the tax brackets have been increased as the slab goes up.

Between incomes of Rs2,400,000 to Rs3,600,000, the FBR has proposed Rs84,000 plus 12.5 percent of the amount exceeding Rs2,400,000. Now this slab rate will be increased up to 17.5 percent.

Between incomes of Rs3,600,000 to Rs6,000,000, the FBR has proposed Rs234,000 plus 17.5 percent of the amount exceeding Rs3,600,000. A proposed tax rate of 20 percent applies to this slab.

Between incomes of Rs6,000,000 to Rs12,000,000, the FBR has proposed Rs654,000 plus 22.5 percent of the amount exceeding Rs6,000,000. Now the revised rate for this slab has been proposed to 25 percent.

As for the seventh slab, where the taxable income exceeds Rs12,000,000, the FBR has proposed Rs2,004,000 plus 32.5 percent of the amount exceeding Rs12,000,000.

Audi in collaboration with Siemens have introduced Pakistan’s first ultra-rapid DC charging station equipped with Siemens SICHARGE D series chargers which can charge at up to 160kw! It has been setup at the Libra Charging Hub located in Saddar Karachi and is a significant first step in fast charging stations for Pakistan. Electric cars can potentially get charged under 30 minutes with this system.

Dastgyr announced that it has raised $37 million in Series A funding which is the biggest investment funding so far in Pakistan at this stage. The round was led by VEON Venture (the corporate venture arm of Jazz Pakistan’s parent company) with a contribution of $15m. This comes nearly a year after its initial seed funding which was of $3.5 million.

Dastgyr is a Karachi based B2B marketplace that connects suppliers to mom-and-pop retailers across Pakistan.
