Today, the Punjab Assembly is set to conduct the election for the speaker and deputy speaker through a secret ballot in the Assembly Chambers. As announced by the secretary of outgoing Speaker Sibtain Khan, these elections will take place at 4:00 pm, following Rules 9 and 10 of the Rules of Procedure of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, 1997.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has put forward Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan as their candidate for the position of Punjab Assembly speaker, opposing Sunni Ittehad Council's nominee Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar. Similarly, for the office of deputy speaker, PML-N's candidate Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channer will compete against SIC's Moeen Riaz. Their nomination papers have undergone scrutiny and have been accepted.

The beleaguered Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) continues to pose challenges to the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and allied parties. The imprisoned founder of the party, Imran Khan, has decided to appeal to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to suspend financial support to Pakistan, citing alleged widespread electoral fraud in the 2024 elections.

In a press briefing, PTI senior leader Ali Zafar confirmed that Imran Khan, currently in jail, will write a letter to the IMF. Following a meeting with Imran Khan, PTI's legal advisor informed reporters that international organizations such as the IMF and EU mandate good governance for nations seeking financial assistance.

He criticized the alleged manipulation of the election results and emphasized the importance of transparent and fair elections in a democratic country. Zafar also expressed disappointment over the government's decision to seek an IMF bailout without verifying the election outcomes.

This is not the first instance of PTI attempting to influence IMF deals. In 2022, Shaukat Tarin advised PTI's finance ministers to inform the IMF that their commitments couldn't be met due to recent floods.

Despite these challenges, Pakistan secured a $3 billion IMF program last year, averting a sovereign debt default. However, this program will expire next month, and securing a new, larger one is a priority for the new government.

Earlier, Fitch Ratings highlighted that Pakistan's recent election results could complicate efforts to secure a new financing deal with the IMF after the current Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) ends in March 2024.

The controversial election outcome and ongoing political uncertainty are expected to prolong negotiations with the IMF, impacting the country's credit profile.
