After a long and intense 7-hour meeting at PSO House in Karachi on Monday evening, the second round of talks between the Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association and the government about the profits on petroleum products has ended successfully.
Sources close to the matter said that both sides reached an agreement and have officially documented it. Representatives from the Ministry of Petroleum, OGRA, and petroleum dealers will now sign the agreed-upon document. Initially, the ministry proposed an increase of Rs1.64 per litre in the profit margin, but the petroleum dealers resisted it. Eventually, they agreed to the proposal as the session went on.
The leader of the association, Malik Khadim Baksh, confirmed the development and said that instead of a one-time increase, the margin will be gradually increased in four stages over 15-day intervals. This means there will be a 41 paisa per litre increase every 15 days until the full recommended margin is reached within two months.
The approved increase in the dealer’s margin will come into effect on August 1, and the final stage will be completed by September 30.
Before this decision, petroleum dealers were asking for a significant increase of 5 rupees per litre on their existing margin of 6 rupees per litre. However, the Minister for Petroleum Affairs linked the increase to a condition of a minimum monthly wage of Rs25,000 for pump workers and an 8-hour working day.
To assess the expenses of petroleum dealers, data from over a thousand petrol pumps in both rural and urban areas were collected over the past two days. The proposed increase of Rs1.64 per litre was based on this analysis.
Earlier, the dealers had threatened to shut down their petrol pumps indefinitely because the outgoing government had not fulfilled its promise of increasing their profit margins to 5%.

This advisory role is honorary, meaning Misbah will not receive any payment for his services. While he was offered a full-time position within the PCB, Misbah declined it due to prior commitments.

In a recent development, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has published a comprehensive list of 157 educational institutions operating illegally and without registration across the country. Additionally, 31 universities and colleges located in Lahore were also flagged as unrecognized. The HEC has issued a stern warning to prospective students, urging them not to enroll in degree programs offered by these institutions.

The list includes various institutions that have been identified as fake, illegal, and unlawful in Punjab, Sindh, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Federal Capital. Atlas Honda Limited (ATLH), a motorcycle manufacturer in Pakistan, anticipates its exports to reach nearly $25 million in its fiscal year MY24 (April 1 to March 31). The company received an export order that is expected to boost its revenue by $25 million.
The management discussed the changing global demand from motorcycles to scooters and identified two potential export destinations. They also reported selling 1.1 million units in MY23 and expect to maintain similar sales volumes in MY24.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative's (NTI) Nuclear Security Index ranking has placed Pakistan above India, North Korea, and Iran in terms of handling weapons-usable nuclear materials. According to the index, Pakistan has gained three points since the last assessment in 2020, securing 19th place out of 22 states.
The total score of 49 for Pakistan is higher than India's 40, Iran's 29, and North Korea's 18.
However, despite Pakistan's relatively higher ranking, the index also raised concerns about the deteriorating global nuclear security situation. It revealed that nuclear security conditions are regressing in many countries with we*pons-usable nuclear materials and nuclear facilities.
The report pointed out that eight countries, including Pakistan, have been expanding their stocks of we*pons-grade nuclear materials, some even increasing them by thousands of kilograms per year. This expansion undermines efforts towards minimization and elimination and poses an increased risk of th*ft.
Furthermore, the index highlighted that some countries are reneging on their commitments to confidence-building and information sharing, which were crucial drivers of progress during the period of the Nuclear Security Summits.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series in August, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said on Tuesday.
Earlier today, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also announced a revised Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2023-2025.
In the revised FTP, Pakistan is supposed to play an away ODI series against Afghanistan in August, 2023. The venue and dates of the series are yet to be announced, but the series is likely to take place in UAE.
Earlier this year in March, the neighbouring countries also played a three-match T20I series in Sharjah, which Afghanistan won by a margin of 2-1.
The aforementioned series between the two countries will serve as preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.

On Tuesday, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan finalized a joint protocol for a significant railway project, aiming to connect Uzbekistan's train network with Pakistan Railways (PR). The proposed route will run through Termiz in Uzbekistan, Mazar-e-Sharif and Logar in Afghanistan, and enter Pakistan via the Kharlachi border crossing in Kurram.
The signing ceremony, attended by Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, and other high-ranking officials from the three countries, marked a historic day for regional connectivity and trade facilitation.
