DCMS Students Clinch Best Team Award at Model SCO Forum

Students Umair Khan and Abdul Jabar from the Department of Communication and Media Studies (DCMS) at the University of Sargodha have brought pride to their department by winning the prestigious "Best Representative Team" award at the Model Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) forum. The event was hosted by the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Sargodha, on November 14-15, 2024.

The forum brought together participants from various departments and institutes of the university, simulating discussions on critical international issues. Delegates represented different SCO countries, presenting their nations' stances on three pivotal issues: terrorism, extremism, and separatism.

Representing the Federation of Russia, Umair Khan and Abdul Jabar stood out for their exceptional performance. They proposed a well-researched and comprehensive resolution to tackle the "three evils," which received overwhelming support and was successfully passed by the SCO member countries during the simulation.

The Model SCO forum provided students with a unique platform to engage in diplomacy, enhance their understanding of international relations, and demonstrate their analytical and negotiation skills. The achievement of Umair Khan and Abdul Jabar underscores the excellence of University of Sargodha students in academic and extracurricular arenas.

The Department of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Sargodha recently organized an art exhibition and community engagement program focused on the themes of local art and digital media. The event was inaugurated by renowned policy advisor, columnist, and media analyst Salman Abid; social activist and advisor Mehvish Khan; Head of the Women Development Centre, Dr. Nargis Abbas; and the Chairman of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, University of Sargodha Dr. Mudassar Hussain Shah

The exhibition showcased innovative ideas developed by students for branding and product promotion, alongside unique forms of artistic self-expression. The primary goal was to encourage and highlight indigenous artistic expression and explore avenues for promoting it internationally via social media.

Speaking at the community engagement program, Salman Abid emphasized the potential of local art in the global market. He noted, “The world is constantly seeking new and innovative ideas, and there is immense potential for our local culture, art, and expression to be marketed internationally. Art and culture are emerging as valuable currency worldwide, and it’s time for our young generation to recognize this new market.”

Dr. Mudassar Hussain Shah also addressed the gathering, highlighting the University of Sargodha’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological entrepreneurship under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaiser Abbas. He added, “This exhibition and community engagement program reflect our vision to empower students economically and enable them to become self-sustaining. We are working closely with the community to enhance productivity and contribute to economic development.”

The event was moderated by Dr. Tariq Nawaz, Coordinator of Student Affairs, adding to the program’s success.

This initiative marks a significant step by the University of Sargodha in supporting creative industries and promoting economic independence through culture-driven entrepreneurship.

The University of Sargodha (UoS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) to provide internship opportunities for students of the Department of Communication and Media Studies (COMS), UoS. The agreement also aimed at offering hands-on experience in news writing, reporting, and various aspects of journalism.
The MoU was signed by Muhammad Asim Khichi, Managing Director of APP and Prof. Dr. Ahmad Raza Bilal, Director of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) UoS, during a ceremony attended by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mian Ghulam Yasin, Chairman COMS Dr. Muddasser Hussain Shah and faculty members.
As part of the agreement, APP will accommodate interns from UoS, granting exclusive access to its news feed for UoS TV and VOV FM 98.2. Both organizations will also collaborate on training workshops and media-related activities.
Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas stated that the MoU will bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical media skills, preparing students for the competitive journalism landscape. Muhammad Asim Khichi emphasized the need for adaptability in the evolving digital media environment, noting that the partnership will empower students to become future-ready media professionals.
