WWF-Pakistan would like to draw attention to mangrove deforestation along Karachi's coastline, a critical environmental concern that demands immediate action. Along with the Sindh Forest Department and local communities, we have made remarkable strides in preserving these invaluable habitats. However, these achievements stand jeopardized by the unabated cutting of mangroves by groups and individuals.

This destruction of mangroves is not only illegal, but also poses a severe threat to our ecosystem. It is imperative that law enforcement agencies strengthen monitoring mechanisms and take decisive action to address this issue promptly and effectively.

Mangroves are a vital natural resource and thriving ecosystems. They play a pivotal role in sustaining biodiversity and environmental equilibrium; serving as carbon sinks, acting as a natural barrier against extreme weather events, and providing habitat for numerous species. Help us in raising our voice for the enforcement of laws and for safeguarding this invaluable natural heritage.

Arsenic. Arsenic-contaminated water is consumed by app. 100 million people worldwide, including Bihar (India) where this project takes place. Arsenic has severe, but delayed health consequences: it is an invisible and taste- & odorless poison in water and food, that not only affects health in the long-term (e.g. cancer), but as well in the short term: e.g. skin-related diseases. It affects health severely and people suffering from Arsenicosis are often psycho-socially marginalized (e.g. stigmatization; Sen & Biswas, 2012), due to their visible symptoms. But nevertheless, arsenic is not necessarily well known in the population of areas with affected groundwater.

For more information on arsenic contamination, please refer to the WHO fact-sheet.

"A 38-year-old man, recently admitted to Ziauddin Hospital’s intensive care unit, was found to be infected with Naegleria fowleri on Tuesday.

Zeeshan is married and a resident of North Karachi.
This is the seventh case of Nageleria fowleri in the city this year.
According to a report prepared by the Regional Disease Surveillance and Response Unit, the risk factor in Zeeshan’s case was piped water.

“There is an urgent need to assess the process of chlorination and level of chlorine at all major water reservoirs supplying water to the city as per the WHO recommendation. Cleanliness must be maintained at all reservoirs, overhead tanks/other reservoirs of households, pumping stations and hydrants on a regular basis,” the report says.
Earlier, six people including a neurosurgeon and an eight-year-old child had died of the same infection called Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri, a deadly organism often referred to as ‘brain-eating amoeba'"

Cape Town, the capital of South Africa, has been declared the world's first drought city! Its government has indicated its inability to provide water after April 14, 2023. The tragic journey of the world has begun! Such a time may come upon us too! Use water sparingly. Stop wasting water. Remember that we also sent water to Latur by rail!
Don't forget the fact that only 2.7% of the world's water is potable!
Invite group members in your area!
All nearby dams have receded and the groundwater table has sunk. As a responsible citizen you can easily make this movement a success.
1). Avoid daily car washes;
2). Limit yard flooding;
3). Stop running the water tap continuously;
4). Save water along with many other measures;
5). Repair leaking faucets at home;
6). fix water leakage in the society;
7). * Plant trees! protect the environment;*
8). Use water sparingly to leave plants…
Let us face this terrible crisis together!

Send the above message to 5 groups... The virtue of saving water will surely happen! Because of us, the thirst of the thirsty will be quenched, the next generation will be protected from aquatic life.

Plant trees! 🌳
Save the environment! 🌴

A social movement...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products since the 1940s. They are found in products such as firefighting foam, non-stick cookware, food packaging, and stain-resistant fabrics.

Because of their chemical structure, they do not break down easily in the environment and can accumulate in human tissue over time. This accumulation can lead to a range of negative health effects, including:

Increased risk of cancer: Exposure to certain types of PFAS has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly kidney and testicular cancer.

Reproductive and developmental problems: Exposure to PFAS has been linked to a range of reproductive and developmental problems, including reduced fertility, low birth weight, and delayed puberty.

Immune system effects: PFAS exposure has been linked to a weakened immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and diseases.

Thyroid hormone disruption: PFAS can disrupt the function of the thyroid gland, which can lead to thyroid hormone imbalances and associated health effects such as weight gain, fatigue, and depression.

Liver damage: Exposure to high levels of PFAS can cause liver damage and may increase the risk of liver cancer.

It is important to note that the health effects of PFAS exposure can vary depending on the specific type of PFAS, the duration and intensity of exposure, and other individual factors. However, it is clear that PFAS are hazardous to human health and that efforts should be made to reduce exposure to these chemicals.
