"Conjunctivitis"-"The Pink Eye"🌸👀
In India, conjunctivitis cases are increasing as a result of recent heavy rains. Let's throw some light on this common eye condition that many people experience globally.
🔍What is Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the thin, clear tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye (Sclera). When this tissue becomes infected, it can lead to redness, swelling, and an eye appearance that ranges from pink to red - hence the name "The Pink Eye"
👀Types of Conjunctivitis:
There are several types of conjunctivitis, and they can be broadly categorised as follows:
1️⃣Viral Conjunctivitis:
~Caused by a viral infection, similar to the common cold.
~Highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected eye secretions.
~Typically affects one eye initially, but can spread to both.
2️⃣Bacterial Conjunctivitis:
~Caused by bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
~Also highly contagious and spreads through direct contact.
~Often affects both eyes and is more common among children.
3️⃣Allergic Conjunctivitis:
~Triggered by allergens like pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or certain eye drops.
~Non-contagious and usually affects both eyes.
~Common in people with seasonal allergies or hay fever.
4️⃣Irritant Conjunctivitis:
~Caused by irritants such as smoke, chemicals, or foreign objects getting into the eye.
~Non-contagious and typically affects only one eye.
🌟Symptoms:
Symptoms of conjunctivitis may vary depending on the cause, but some common ones include:
~Red or pink discoloration of the eye.
~Eye discharge, which may be clear, white, yellow, or greenish.
~Itchiness or irritation in the eye.
~Watery eyes.
~Sensitivity to light.
~Crusty eyelids, especially in the morning.
⚠️Seeking Medical Attention:
While most cases of conjunctivitis are not serious and can resolve on their own, it's essential to seek medical attention for proper diagnosis and treatment, especially if:
~You experience severe pain in the eye.
~Your vision is affected.
~The symptoms persist or worsen after a few days.
~You have a weakened immune system.
~You suspect a foreign object in your eye.
