The efforts of governments and retailers will go to waste if we, the consumers, don’t contribute to the effort of reducing plastic bag usage. Yes, you’ve been so used to it. It’s a cheap and convenient way to carry things around. But there are other, better, alternatives. We just need to recondition our minds and make it a habit. Here are some suggestions:

- Start by bringing your own Eco-Friendly bags.
- Reuse and Recycle your plastic bags at home. You can take them to a nearby recycling center.
- Patronize businesses that support the effort to reduce plastic bag usage. Don’t get mad at them for inconveniencing you if they don’t give you a plastic bag.
- Spread awareness by not accepting plastic bags from retailers and reminding them that it’s toxic to our environment.
- Let’s start educating our children about the plastic bag problem so they will continue the efforts and go green themselves.
- Stop using plastic altogether.

Just by remembering to bring your own bag when you go shopping, you’ll be helping our environment in a very big way.

The same properties that make plastics so useful — their durability and resistance to degradation — also make them nearly impossible for nature to completely break down.
Most plastic items never fully disappear; they just get smaller and smaller. Many of these tiny plastic particles are swallowed by farm animals or fish who mistake them for food, and thus can find their way onto our dinner plates. They’ve also been found in a majority of the world’s tap water.
By clogging sewers and providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes and pests, plastic waste — especially plastic bags — can increase the transmission of vector-borne diseases like malaria.

Plastic will only start degrading after 700 years and will only fully degrade in 1000 years. This means that all the plastic that has ever been produced has not degraded yet.

It’s worth reminding ourselves that plastic is not just one material – technically it’s a collective term for a variety of synthetic polymers. Goods made from plastics have been increasing exponentially since the middle of last century. Many of these products, unfortunately, are created for single use - roughly half of plastic is used once and thrown away. More than 3.3 million tonnes of plastic are wasted each year in Pakistan, and most of it ends in landfills, unmanaged dumps or strewn about land and water bodies across the country. The figure below shows if we dump this waste collectively together, it can go as high as 16500 m making the height of two of world’s second highest mountains in the world (K2 mountain).
Pakistan has the highest percentage of mismanaged plastic in South Asia. There are several countries that have duly banned the use of plastic bags such as Bangladesh, France, and Rwanda. Pakistan learning from these countries’ initiatives has issued a (Statutory Regulatory Order) SRO to ban the plastic bags in Federal Capital Islamabad and other cities including Lahore and Hunza.

Every year, around 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. 500,000,000,000. Five hundred followed by nine zeros. That's a lot of bags. So many that over one million bags are being used every minute and they're damaging our environment.
Big numbers can be daunting so let's put it another way. Every man, woman and child on our planet uses 83
plastic bags every year. That's one bag per person every four and half days. Of those 500 billion bags, 100
billion are consumed in the United States alone.

We cannot change the world, but what we can do is change our ways. Cut down on plastic bag usage yourself and then motivate others to do the same. You might never know what positive effects your change of habits may have on the world.

FACT CHECK : It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately, the bags don't break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.

By 2050, the oceans will have more waste plastics than fish
As people continue to dump plastic bags into the environment, which end up into the water bodies, a 2016 Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s The New Plastics Economy report points out that over 8m tonnes of plastics find its way into the ocean.

This is equivalent to throwing the content of one garbage truck into the sea every minute.
